Local Community Building at OSM

Yesterday, November 8, the event Local Community Building at OSM: Tips, Tricks and Challenges was held, organized by the Hotosm Community Working Group for Spanish-speaking OpenStreetMap communities.

As in any event worth its salt, there is a Document -in Spanish- with the notes on the presentations, conversations and chats, in addition to the video, of course (the video is -again- in Spanish).

I used the aforementioned document to make a live tweeting of the event from the @esopenstreetmap Twitter account, and then it occurred to me to make a thematic summary of the event based on the same notes, in order to facilitate the generation of future actions by the leaders of the communities. That summary is what I present in this post.

It’s great to see Users doing OSM editing for Humanitarian use. I live in a Highlands area prone to Frost, and droughts for longer period causing havoc to communities.

I hope to see Relief agencies using our OSM Maps for providing assistance during time odf disaster. Thankyou you OSM, if it hadn’t been your key role in providing open-sourced maps, I don’t think Government agencies will be willing to provide maps to its citizens during times of great need.

Government agencies and Departments don’t provide maps readily and would often come at cost which some can not really access it readily for their use.

I really appreciate the effort by the Developers of OSM and the selfless devotion in creating new features for all Mappers around the world to work on this vital platform for common good for humanity.

Thanks all and happy mapping form Papua New Guinea.

TrackExplorer

TrackExplorer is a solution based on the idea of RaceDirector. The difference is that with TrackExplorer you can use any GPX file - with or without timestamps. You can choose different activities and no matter where on earth you have recorded GPX data, the data can be displayed in an 3D environment.

TrackExplorer Quick Overview

Via the website TrackExplorer Upload you can easily upload any GPX file. If your GPX file does not have a timestamp, you can decide during the upload the speed your data should be displayed in TrackExplorer. This is necessary if you create the GPX file with a route planner – in most cases there are no timestamps available. TrackExplorer offers different activity categories. Depending on your selection, your uploaded GPX data will be displayed with your chosen activity.

create new app ( osm.org/oauth2/applications/new )
set callback url ( must be https if not 127.0.0.1 )
client id and secret will be presented ( secret only once )

to obtain authorization code from browser go to
https://www.openstreetmap.org/oauth2/authorize?client_id=<Client ID>&response_type=code&redirect_uri=<Callback url encoded>&scope=write_api%20read_prefs%20write_notes

when user authorize access callback will be called like
https://localhost:7077/oauth2/callback?code=<Authorization Code>

exchange Authorization Code for access token, POST
curl -d "" 'https://www.openstreetmap.org/oauth2/token?grant_type=authorization_code&code=<Authorization Code>&client_id=<Client ID>&redirect_uri=<Callback url encoded>&client_secret=<Client Secret>'

access token will be returned as json, use it for API calls
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer <Access token>" 'https://api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/user/details'

Real Time Kinetics (RTK)

For half a year now I’m walking, biking and generally moving accompanied by an uBlock F9P unit, which is a precision multichannel GPS receiver board with an external antenna and bluetooth connection to my mobile phone. The phone receives correction stream (NTRIP) by mobile net and uploads it to the unit, which in turn uses the correctional data to fix up atmospheric noise in the GPS signal.

The result is a GPS position way more precise than a phone.

There are 3 usual states:

  • RTK - or “Real Time Kinetics”, when there is both satellite and internet data is available, and the base station of the stream is near. It means precision between 50 centimeters up to 5 centimeters! Imagine it like not only it’s visible when I go to the other side of the path but the track even show when I turn around, since my backpack makes a 30 cm circle around. :-)
  • FloatRTK - is when the precision “floats” from a known-good position, which in practice mean 1.5 meters up to about 90 cm (on average 1 m). When I am within 100-300 km of a base station and I’m moving in a forest this is the most usual state.
  • DGPS - when there is no RTK fix (usually due to no mobile network or blocked satellite receiving) the “normal” differential receiving mode is active, which means 3m - 1m precision, closer to 1.5 m on average, thanks to the external antenna and multichannel receiver.

When I am on FloatRTK or RTK it’s amazing: it can get back to the same position everytime, later on the day, or on a different day, which basically mean that the position is exact. I can draw a track with 50 cm precision and try not to draw that much detail on OSM (not to make anyone mad seeing fixes of centimeters along :-)).
