During my urban recycling trekking (see previous journal entries), I photographed all the voluntary drop-off containers I came across, uploaded these photos to Panoramax, and added the Panoramax photo reference in OSM. Pourquoi me suis-je intéressé au sujet ?

Au cours de mon trekking urbain recyclage (voir entrées de journal précédentes), j’ai photographié tous les conteneurs de point d’apport volontaire que j’ai rencontrés, versé ces photos sur Panoramax et mis dans OSM la référence de la photo Panoramax. Cela ne m’a posé aucun problème, mon but étant qu’à partir du calque standard de rendu d’Openstreetmap, il soit aisé (en l’occurence un simple clic) de trouver les images.

Je positionnais dans OSM les conteneurs non pas à partir de la photo mais à partir de l’imagerie aérienne et des éléments pertinents de l’environnement (croisements de rues, bâtiments, …). Cela m’a parfaitement convenu jusqu’à trois constats :

My urban recycling trek is now complete (at least regarding the attempt to map all voluntary drop-off points in the GPS&O intercommunality). I still need to clear up some fixme tags. This journal entry isn’t about mapping information but simply about a few encounters I had during my walks. They are just brief flashes of emotion, smiles, or frustration.

To understand the atmosphere of these encounters, picture me as:

• 70 years old, usually in shorts (except below 11°C)
• with a backpack (20L)
• always carrying at least one hiking pole in one hand and a camera in the other
• sometimes with a pole sticking out of my backpack holding a GNSS antenna at head height

2025-09-08 in Médan I’m looking for a micro-daycare facility to verify the presence of an AED (Osmose suggestion). I wander a bit around the assumed location at the end of a residential cul-de-sac and eventually identify the daycare. I hesitate to enter the garden and ring the doorbell when an educator opens a ground-floor window, leans out, and asks whether I’m looking for something and if she can help (a polite way of saying “we’re watching, please move along”).

We exchange a couple of rather friendly minutes during which I silently give up on asking whether I may come in to photograph the AED (didn’t seem very wise). Instead, I hand her my phone and ask if she can photograph the AED on their wall (at least we both know she will avoid putting any children in the frame).

Mon trekking urbain recyclage est maintenant fini (en ce qui concerne la tentative de cartographie de tous les points d’apport volontaire de l’intercommunalité GPS&O.). Il me reste à régler certains fixme.
Cette entrée de journal ne concerne pas des informations cartographiques mais simplement quelques rencontres que j’ai faites au cours de mes marches. Il s’agit juste de brefs éclats d’émotion, de sourire ou de colère.

Pour comprendre l’ambiance de ces rencontres, il faut m’imaginer :

J’hésite à entrer dans le jardin et à sonner à la porte lorsqu’une animatrice ouvre une fenêtre (rez-de-chaussée), se penche à l’extérieur et me demande si je cherche quelque chose et si elle peut m’aider (façon de me dire “nous sommes vigilantes, passez votre chemin”).

Bilan quantitatif.

J’avais estimé au départ 240 noeuds à créer et la pratique m’a clairement détrompé. j’en suis à :

• 1659 noeuds PAV et 8 déchèteries créés (ou complétés s’ils existaient déjà)
• 320 km parcourus à pied pour passer devant chacun de ces points, les géolocaliser et les photographier (sans compter bien sûr les plus de 500 km en voiture électrique pour aller et revenir aux départs des 32 boucles pédestres)
• 6000 photos prises (une par une, pas de séquence GoPro), dont 2000 versées à Panoramax

Thanks to the forum, I was guided towards Wikidata, which allows assigning a unique code to a large number of resources (companies, operators, municipalities, associations, widely known people, …).

Once the resource in question is given a Wikidata code, its Wikidata entry contains important data (name, website, Wikipedia reference, revenue, …) and thus allows all Wikipedia collaborative applications to access these elements in a common way. So it is enough to reference the operator’s Wikidata code in OSM tags to identify it uniquely and stably. From this code, it’s easy to retrieve the operator’s website, its Wikipedia reference, and other useful information without having to explicitly add them as OSM tags (which would require updating OSM every time the data changes).

A single concession seems necessary: I retrieved the operator’s official name from its Wikidata entry and added it as an OSM tag for readability.

Grâce au forum, j’ai sur ce sujet été orienté vers wikidata qui permet d’affecter un code unique à un grand nombre de ressources (sociétés, opérateurs, communes, groupements, personnage à portée large, …).

Une fois la ressource concernée dotée d’un code wikidata, son entrée wikidata contient les données importantes (nom, site web, référence wikipedia, chiffre d’affaires, … ) et permet ainsi à toutes les applications de la sphère collaborative wikipedia d’accéder de façon commune à ces éléments. Il suffit donc de référencer le code wikidata de l’opérateur dans les étiquettes OSM pour identifier celui-ci de façon unique et stable. A partir de ce code, il sera aisé de retrouver le site WEB de l’opérateur, sa référence wikipedia et autres renseignements utiles sans avoir à les mettre comme étiquettes explicites de OSM (ce qui obligerait à mettre à jour OSM chaque fois que ces données changent).

Une seule concession nécessaire, me semble-t-il : j’ai récupéré le nom officiel de l’opérateur dans ses données wikidata et l’ai mis en étiquette OSM pour plus de lisibilité.

Context

Since April 2025, I’ve been discovering OSM and trying to contribute wherever I can. Needless to say, I’m learning something new every day about OSM mapping (thanks to the Wiki, forum, and fellow contributors).

While exploring my neighborhood, I added a voluntary drop-off point (for recyclable — though not always — waste) to OSM, located 800m from my home. I then discovered that the local intermunicipal authority has an app listing a large portion of the collection points. I wondered whether it was legally and technically feasible to retrieve those, and whether it would align with the OSM ethos.

The forum quickly (and kindly) set me straight (as I said, after only 2 months with OSM, I’m learning a lot every day):

• Extracting data from a website’s database is obviously illegal unless there’s an explicit license that allows it.
• Even if there were a friendly license (which is not the case here), it would still need to be ODbL-compatible to import the data into OSM.

This led me to pursue two parallel paths:

1. Finding a sustainable solution via an open data source, which means:

   • Trying to convince the intermunicipality to publish its data, ideally on www.data.gouv.fr
   • Convincing them to make this publication sustainable (i.e., generate an export every time there are updates)
   • Assessing how, in theory, this data could be used (completeness, attribute matching, duplicate detection, handling conflicts between open data and on-the-ground data — which can either be better or simply incorrectly entered)
   • Finding out how and by whom the data could be imported
   • Seeing if all of this could happen before 2035

Le contexte

Depuis avril 2025, je découvre OSM et cherche à contribuer sur ce que je peux. Autant dire que j’en apprends tous les jours sur le mapping OSM (merci WIKI, forum et autres contributeurs).

En m’intéressant au voisinage, j’ai ajouté à OSM un point d’apport volontaire (collecte de déchets recyclables - pas toujours -) à 800m de chez moi. J’ai alors découvert que l’intercommunalité locale avait une application recensant une partie importante des points de collecte et me suis demandé s’il était envisageable légalement et techniquement de les récupérer, puis si c’était conforme à l’esprit OSM.

Le forum m’a rapidement (et gentiment) recadré (quand je vous dit qu’avec 2 mois d’OSM derrière moi, j’en apprends plein tous les jours) :

• récupérer des données d’une base de données via son site Web est bien évidemment illégal si aucune mention explicite de license ad hoc n’est faite
• même si une license sympathique est exprimée (ce qui n’est pas le cas ici), encore faut-il qu’elle soit compatible avec ODBL pour l’insérer dans OSM.

Who am I ?

I have been retired since 2020 after a long career in networking and IT security.

Since then, I’ve spent my time walking (nothing too ambitious: no mountains, but still around 2,000 km per year) and doing math (a lifelong hobby, mainly algebra focused on functional equations).

I discovered OSM very recently (spring 2025) when switching from Windows to Linux MINT and trying out my first smartphone with LineageOS (a de-Googled Android).

what follows is of course only my personal opinion

At first, I thought it was just a freely editable map application, before realizing that it is in fact:

• a global geospatial database with open contributions, listing and exposing only data that is free of rights, under the most permissive licenses possible.

• a vast open-source application ecosystem leveraging this geospatial database for a wide variety of uses:

  • to contribute or make smart, efficient, even fun use of it.

    • Tools I’ve looked at and used: Id, JOSM, OsmTracker, Osmose, StreetComplete, taginfo, overpass, panoramax, NSI
    • Tools I’ve only skimmed so far: MapRoulette, Mon Commerce OSM, Libre Charge Map, H.O.T.

  • to use the database for various purposes aimed at diverse audiences:

    • The one that led me to OSM: OsmAnd, then leaflet and uMap
    • Also cartes.app, and a bunch of hiking and cycling apps that I’ve only briefly glimpsed.
• and of course, a set of proprietary applications built on the OSM database (not always with proper attribution, by the way)

So I created an account, joined OpenStreetMapFrance (not mandatory), and tried to understand enough of the principles, limitations, and recommendations to contribute effectively.

I’m now a regular reader of the WIKI and the forum (even though I sometimes struggle to follow whole conversations – such as those about hiking route relations, linear or networked…).
