The thing is it isn’t “just copying over” and would still involve work both on automating the build process and integrating this in to the app (you definitely don’t want to parse all root certs on startup). But yes if the situation degrades faster than expected for the impacted devices this would be a possible option.

Adding actually missing POIs is on the other hand trivial, just get the Overture data as GeoJSON and off you go, but as said potentially on a wild goose chase.

The question is more how high is the false positive rate and what kind of level is acceptable.

I suspect nobody wants to waste significant amount of mapper time on chasing fata morganas.

There’s already a fair body of discussion on the quality, or more the lack of it, of Overtures POI data.

The main problem are not the cases that can be reasonably be determined to be wrong with available additional information as you mention, but the ones that are plausible but are actually made up. Not all of them are so easy to verify as the nearby one, for which I can look out of the window and come to the conclusion that is isn’t a thing.

You are just re-finding out what was has been found out multiple times over the last two decades.

The pragmatic and practical approach, learnt the hard way, has been to create street level imagery, early on with mapillary, these days with Panoramax and then add information from that with your fav editor after the fact.

On the legal front I would note that you will need to investigate what local restrictions on generating such images are applicable for you.

MapComplete is a web app and available on iOS (and arguably a better choice than SC when ‘nothing’ has been mapped).

Some wild assumptions here it seems, facts are:

• Apple has ~20% of the global phone market, the other 80% are essentially all Android phones. Now while you can argue that iPhones are more common in affluent parts of society that are more likely to map, that doesn’t turn things upside down. BTW Go Map!! has had quest support for a long time.
• SC is the starting point for ~5% of new mappers, about half of what starts OSM with Organic Maps/Comaps. From a mapper retention pov, long term it is no better than iD (which is what most mappers start with). Historically it has been worse however that would need some new numbers to see if that is still the case. What is true is that very short term SC users edit a bit more, a possibly reason for this is that iD users as a tendency want to specifically fix something and then stop when that task has been done, SC users on the other hand are likely to at least play a couple of quests before they decide that it is something they like or not.
• As a rule OSM lives from incremental improvement and that has always been the case, while there might be some communities that require every addition to be perfectly complete, I have yet to come across one, in any case that doesn’t depend on the tool you are using.

You can for example simply open the GPX file in a file explorer (which will ask you if you want to open it in Vespucci) or manually add a layer as has already been suggested or download a track from OSM.

Dismissive language is used in essentially every paper that I have ever read from Heidelberg, particularly widespread use of “only” to describe statistical results from OSM both in the data and participation, but never is there a comparison with a dataset that would show that the specific number is actually worse than expected.

Simply maintain the boundary ways separate from whatever geographic feature potentially coincides with them, with other words don’t share ways in boundary relations and don’t glue (aka share nodes) to the natural features.

Even if the boundary is currently defined by a natural feature, directly or indirectly, it is still less painful to maintain correct borders when they are a separate feature.

While I typically do 99% of my mapping these days on a mobile device with a pen/stylus, I’ve long (as in decades) switched to using track balls on desktops to avoid having to use mice.

Tee available global imagery mosaics (mapbox, ESRI, bing) use mostly imagery from Maxar for areas which don’t have better coverage. Maxar itself, as you may know, gave up providing a layer for OSM use, and it is up to the other providers to when they update.

The point that you are getting wrong is that the people from the Linux Foundation Overture Maps are being paid to be there and being paid to be friendly and make the right noises. And being professionals they are good in doing exactly that.

They could be going to an event organised by google next week and attendees there will come back finding them friendly, supportive and so on just as you did from SOTM-US.

The only thing you can actually judge the organisation on is their actions, and after two and a half years things haven’t changed a jota (and I wouldn’t expect them to).
