5773 | MT ELGON LANDSLIDE RISK

Mt. Elgon, located in Eastern Uganda, is reported to have the highest rates of landslides and floods in Uganda, often with devastating impacts on local communities. High annual rainfall, steep slopes, increasing population pressure, and cultivation on steep slopes following deforestation are the leading causal factors of landslides.

In October 2018 landslides and debris flows occurred in Bududa District , causing 60 fatalities and displacing thousand of families. GFDRR is supporting the Government of Uganda in assessing landslide and other hydrophysical risks in the wider Mt Elgon area. Detailed location of buildings and roads are needed to study the potential impact on population and infrastructure.
