The local broad (lake in other parts) called Martham Broad was missing so I have added it this morning together with the navigable channel that passes between the two bodies of water and the boat dyke where I have been known to launch my kayak from that is at the end of this navigable stretch of the River Thurne. A beautiful area at this time of year especially when you get it all to yourself.

I also re-plotted Horsey Mere, another body of water to the north and again the navigation channel that feeds it. I also needed to shift Horsey windpump as it had been plotted in the wrong spot by a hundred metres or so which put it the wrong side of the river.

I went to the Woodford Folk Festival on the 30th after about a twelve year abstention period. Long enough for me to forget why I didn't want to return – it's the heat, stupid. I suggest you find out more about the festival from Wikipedia, or by general googling, or image googling, or even get 1k words from flickr, but steer well clear of the painful-to-use official site (no link love, brothers).

So before leaving, I checked the map – the festival site itself is not marked (it was in fact marked since I looked by David Dean on the 29th, it seems). I remembered something about a Burning Man festival being mapped by OSM, so checked that out for ideas. Not particularly fruitful for tagging guidance, but it turned out to have been mapped in cooperation with the festival organisers (as a win-win). I liked that approach. Maybe someone keener than me might take that idea to the WFF organisers in future. Be warned that their website doesn't indicate any embracing of open digital culture (WMV downloads, right-click is disabled).

I decided to only map features which are likely to persist from year to year, which means permanent structures, larger footways (pedestrian ways, specifically), the large carpark, and the gates. Many of the larger performance venues weren't even permanent. It's just as well, because it was profoundly uncomfortable in the heat of day. Though my GPS remained on, I had very little energy for anything but finding refreshment and respite from the heat. The venues were like ovens, diminishing enjoyment almost completely. Against this adversity, for what it's worth, I was blown away (unfortunately not coolly) with performances by Doch and Taikoz. (sigh … why does every music group's website have to suck?)

So I used "access=designated" for most ways on the site. It's on private property and opens as a commercial venture during event times only. Please tell me if I should do it another way.

Also hab ich o.g.

Frohes Neues 2009

Now, as far as I remember from driving that road weekly for most of a year, and not getting my feet wet, I'm guessing the lake was done from Landsat, and the road from NPE. The lake is a reservoir that's been there since 1976, according to Wikipedia. What's weird, is that the road was drawn in AFTER the lake. It obviously never occurred to the original road creator to check what the area he was drawing across actually was.... :-)
I've used Landsat and memory to reroute the road around the lake - map will update on Wednesday so this post will make little sense afterwards...

Doing nothing on the first day of the year, I thought I would create some GPS traces for the nearby shopping mall's parking lot. It took me about 40 minutes to drive all the roads.

When I came home, I started adding the road information for the parking lot to OSM. I note about the parking lot, is that it have been renewed a year ago, so the Yahoo images where of limited use.

But how many details should one add? I mean - it's a parking lot! But then again, its a big one (for danish standards).

One thing I learned, was that I should have made some more small traces instead of the one big one i did. Some places, there are two levels of parking, just covering each other a little. Here it would have been nice, if I could turn the trace layers on and of in the editor.

Yesterday being a lovely sunny day I headed out to my nearest place with a significant number of un-named roads (Goffs Oak), thinking an hour or two would knock it off. Unfortunately, when I got there I discovered loads of others that weren't on the map at all, so GPS tracked them, naming them and others as I went. However, now I have to go at least once more to finish off, and then again at least once more to do all interconnecting footways, which are so prevalent in these estates. Have traced the landuse=residential from Y! to delineate the areas. Also find that GPS traces are far better than Y! traces in this kind of environment because they are newish estates, with all the spurs, deadends, footpaths, parking areas, etc which you can't get the nuances off without actually being there. Even when there I sometimes can't decide when things are road and when they are just shared driveways to one or two houses. I usually go by the change in surface. If they have a lip and change from tarmac to sets or some other fancy surface I usually stop there.
Best road name - Dig Dag Hill.
