I believe that this conversation contains some valuable information for those who want to map bicycle routes and mountain bike routes in countries other than USA.

Hello,

I can see that you are the one who created the GDMBR route relation.

I was wondering whether that route is somehow marked, and if it’s not, what is the policy regarding mapping non-marked mountain bike routes? I can’t find any info on the wiki.

The thing is that I was going to map a similar mountain bike route in Russia, but the local community members told me that only those routes that are somehow marked should be mapped.

Could you please give me some advice?

The route known as GDMBR has a long and storied history in OSM. As you can see by its cycle_network tag (US:ACA), it is a route by ACA, the Adventure Cycle Association, a bicycle advocacy organization in the USA which promotes long-distance bicycle touring. ACA has developed a national-scope bicycle network of about two dozen named (not numbered) routes. These route data are private (proprietary / copyrighted by ACA), so their entry into OSM violates our ODbL. However, some cyclists captured GPS data while riding, so for a very few of their routes (3 or so) pieces of these routes (or in the case of GDMBR, the whole of it) are in OSM, and so far it’s “OK” for us to do this, although we shouldn’t make a habit of it, lest we anger ACA.

I was wondering whether that route is somehow marked, and if it’s not, what is the policy regarding mapping non-marked mountain bike routes? I can’t find any info on the wiki.

A geoglyph of an enormous serpent, (300m long x 10m wide) oriented east going west appears in a side view to slither across an moderate valley floor. Complete with sharp looking teeth, a nose horn and an outstretched body. It appears to have an engorged throat suggesting it just had a meal, but its exact meaning is unclear. The image of the snake has a ornate bumps on its head.

A geoglyph of a 130m long x 10m wide of what appears to look like a Moray Eel swimming east to west on moderate steep terrain. Side view includes moray eel in motion. There seems to also be a second Geoglyph under the eel about 25m away.

During most of the time I’ve been mapping in OpenStreetMap I’ve concentrated mainly on mapping town and city centres in the UK in high levels of detail. I try and map all the shops and buildings on the streets I’ve surveyed by taking photos of the streets and buildings. In the last few years I extended this to start adding the ‘Simple 3D buildings’ tags (osm.wiki/Simple_3D_Buildings) to buildings, enabling additional details to be recorded about buildings and for them to be rendered in 3D.

Recently I finished mapping Hertford town centre in detail including 3D tags and this can be seen on OSM (in 2D) at osm.org/#map=18/51.79638/-0.07740, and in various 3D renderings such as F4 Map (https://demo.f4map.com/#lat=51.7962036&lon=-0.0795818&zoom=18) and OSM Buildings (https://osmbuildings.org/?lat=51.79617&lon=-0.07938&zoom=17.8&tilt=30). Many other renderings are available – see osm.wiki/wiki/3D.

Other places where I’ve done much 3D mapping in the UK have included Alton, Eastbourne, Dartford, Llandudno, Conwy, Leytonstone, Bridport, between Strood and Chatham, and bits of East London around Limehouse and Hackney. I also did a bit of 3D mapping in Santiago de Compostela and Madrid in Spain. The area though where I’ve done the most 3D mapping has been in central London. London I’m sure has the largest number of 3D mapped buildings in the UK with a few different mappers doing some incredible 3D mapping both in terms of the number of buildings mapped and the level of detail on several complex buildings. I’ve personally though tended to do mainly simpler buildings, and my mapping has been scattered around various different areas I’ve visited.

When the OSMF board started their survey i posted here some critical commentary on the design of the survey. Now that the results have been published (and the board should be commended for doing so in a fairly comprehensive fashion) there has been analysis and interpretations presented from various sides. I also already made a few comments as part of my report from the advisory board and although i don’t want to do any more elaborate numbers processing i wanted to share my overall impressions of the survey taking into account the responses as well. As before with my comments on the questions and also in contrast to most of the other analysis that has been presented so far this is focusing less on technical analysis and more of overall qualitative considerations and methodological critique.

Retrospective questions (F1-F5)

The first five questions of the survey were asking for retrospective approval or disapproval on some specific decisions of the OSMF board. I already commented on the issues of these questions in detail while the survey was running. My primary impression from the results on these is that the approval in the resposes is actually weaker than i anticipated considering the leading character and selection of the questions. In other words: Despite the questions specifically not being of a nature that is likely to evoke strong negative reactions the answers show a remarkably broad spectrum of views.

I have just read in the OSM weekly that Michal has published analysis of the OSMF 2021 survey. I thank him, and others in the OSM community for the time and work spent on this.

Re-visualising the responses

One thing that drew my attention, is the visualisation of the 5 “sentiment” questions from the survey. The questions had Likert-style response options, where the respondents could either disagree or agree with the statement. There was also a neutral option in the middle. Such data are better visualised using a diverging colour palette. Since Michal kindly released all the files through github, I could recreate the maps using what is, in my opinion, a more suitable visualisation.

The first beta release of Vespucci 15.2 has just become available on googles play store, alternatively you can download it from releases in Vespucci repository.

While it would always be nice if as many users as possible could test this as fast as possible, this year due to events outside of our control (bintray demise, mapillary sunsetting its current API at extremely short notice, not to mention the usual multiple man weeks of work due to googles requirements), we need to get this release out of the way asap, any help with that would be appreciated.

Dedicated address mode and address handling improvements

When we introduced the “simple mode” in Vespucci 12 in 2019 there was no way to directly add address nodes without switching to the old element creation mode via long press (you could however add a node and then predict the address in the property editor). To make this a bit easier 15.2 introduces a dedicated “Address” mode that switches the “plus”-button to allow adding

  • an address node (including automatically adding an entrance tag if the node is on a building outline)
  • an address interpolation
  • a map note

Further improvements include support for addr:block, addr:conscriptionnumber and addr:block_number in the address tags preference, and the use of information from geocontext project for region specific default address tags.

Support mode specific launcher shortcuts

After adding a short cut for the “help” system in 15.1, we’ve added further short cuts for specific modes: Indoor, Tag-only and Address.

In launchers that support the functionality short cuts can be accessed by a long press on the app icon, and dragged to create short cut links for direct access.

Support merging closed ways/polygons

Basic support for merging two closed ways/polygons has been added to the multi-select mode. If their are no common nodes, or if the function dedects inner rings this will create a multi-polygon, otherwise a single closed way.

Several 25m wide x 30m long etched geoglyph heads lay side by side on two separate hillsides separated by a moderately sloped valley. Most the heads are oriented north (forehead) to south (chin). Some of the heads, when side by side, will share common edges and lines. Additionally a proportion of heads appear anatomically correct while others appear highly abstract. It is possible that from some perspectives some of the heads might appear anatomically correct.

Starting January 2021, Enedis and OpenStreetMap France, OSMF French local chapter, entered together into a 3 years term partnership. It’s a significant step forward for data exchange and collaboration between OpenStreetMap community and utilities companies. Enedis started to publish some of its data under an open data Licence back in 2015 and now wished to ally to a well-known project like OSM to encourage crowdsourcing in a virtuous way.

Enedis operates the public electricity distribution network of 95% of Metropolitan France. It was the first European distribution system operator to get involved in open data by sharing useful assets for environmental transition and public service. Sharing its network cartography is particularly useful for OSM community since 2018.

This partnership is part of Enedis 2020-2025 Industrial strategy and as well in OSM France strategic roadmap to improve OSM usage and institutional contribution.

Partnership as a win-win solution

According to this partnership terms and conditions, Enedis agreed to provide more open data related to its operated infrastructure and aerial imagery at 5-cm resolution scale produced on a part of Metropolitan France over surroundings of power distribution grid. These pieces of imagery will be dedicated to OSM contribution only and will be usable as background in most of existing editors (JOSM, iD, …). This will serve common business topics shared by both Enedis and OSM France such as * Overhead power poles and lines mapping * Comprehensive surface power street cabinets inventory * Up to 4 other topics could be defined during this 3-years term.

O INE disponibiliza um conjunto de moradas relativas a alojamentos, no formato ATOM

O serviço é apenas um índice. O serviço em si divide-se em partes:

Dentro de cada índice, há dois links para cada município com a mesma informação: um no sistema de coordenadas Portuguesas EPSG:3763 e outro em Europeias ETRS:4258.

Por exemplo, para o meu município, Ílhavo, terei que usar o índice da zona centro e descarregar:

Não é fácil ler e transformar o GML em algo usável num editor de OSM. Mas como é um processo automatizável, aqui fica a descrição do processo. O que aqui fiz para Ílhavo, pode ser feito para qualquer outro concelho. Pode ser feito na linha de comandos. Vou usar o QGIS só para visualizar os dados.

Estou a utilizar o GDAL e uma base de dados PostgreSQL com Postgis.

This is a short diary entry to announce the publication of a project I’ve been working on for the last month or so called OSM Queries.

It’s a website containing a small, but growing, collection of useful Overpass API queries. This includes a 26 part tutorial that covers most of the core features of the language and a syntax reference.

The website is generated using an open source tool that can generate HTML pages from a collection of Overpass queries.
