I recently got an openmoko neo freerunner gps phone. The gps seems to work very well for mapping. I can walk around a small carpark (20 cars or so), and get straight edges with perfect corners. The sirf III was never that good for details.

I'm currently at the Google DevFest in the University of the Philippines, Diliman, where people from Mountain View and elsewhere are presenting and demo-ing various web-related Google APIs. Pamela Fox of the Google Maps team is currently talking about Google Maps API (and Map Maker, Earth API, etc.).
I talked about Google Map Maker vs. OpenStreetMap before and found Google Map Maker wanting (just like the reaction of many OpenStreetMappers).
Anyway, Pamela Fox hinted that Maps API developers might be able to use Map Maker map tiles as an option instead of the regular Maps map tiles. However, there's no mention yet about the licensing issues of the map tiles and the raw data. I plan to talk to her later regarding this.
(I also want to ask if Google would be inclined to go the way of Yahoo! in letting OSM use the satellite images as well for tracing.)
I finally had the time to decipher my hand drawn treasure map from the scratches of me feather pen, and so now all my marking are posted, and should be rendered soon. :) It looks like part of it already has.. so that's cool.
I look forward to going back to the island on my next trip to further map it, and perhaps map some of the neighboring island park.
... but there's always more work to-do. .. (even if someone decided to beet me to it), there is lots of work to be done.
Happy mapping,

Anybody knows what is the best tag for a bicycle shared lane (aka an entire street that is also designated as a cycleway)? Although this is apparently uncommon in Europe (or it would be liste din the tags), it is frequent at least in Quebec (a sizeable portion of the Route Verte network are shared lanes). I've been using bicycle=designated for those, but the cycle map does not recognize them, and cycleway=designated appears to have an entirely different meaning (just WHAT it is exactly, though, I am not clear). Will the cycle map pick up ANY cycleway=* tag? If so I'd be happy to use cycleway=shared. Otherwise, who should be contacted to point out this issue?

I have a local river tagged with name=
The problem I see is how the name is located on the rendered map. My guess is that it is located at the geometric center of the way. In the case of where there is a large bend in the river, the name is located way off.
Is the best suggestion to split that section into smaller ways, forcing the name to be located closer (and therefore more often)?
I don't suppose there is a method of locating the name manually.

Is it possible to convert the map for use in GPS?
How?
The UK post office's response to a Freedom of Information Request (http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/location_of_every_post_box_that) asking for the location of post boxes was somewhat less helpful than had been hoped - they did provide a list but the locations were rather approximate.
So the obvious next step was to crowd source the job of working out where they really were, which somebody has now done, using OpenStreetMap maps of course.
So if you want to help pin match the official list of post boxes to the ones you've found while mapping, here's where you can do it:
I have to say the recent Mapnik update for Metro manila is looking quite extensive!
- Paranaque and Las Pinas are getting more coverage (though a lot has no names)
- More buildings added
- North Caloocan gets some love (partly by me, need to add road names)
- We now have municipal/provincial boundaries (which of course can be improved further)
- Taytay from rally's data import
- More landuse added
- And oh! I really liked this one:
osm.org/?lat=14.7321&lon=120.8927&zoom=14&layers=B000FTF
At this rate, I can boldly say we can get the Metro Manila completed by the end of 2009! (At least for roads).
The black-holes that needs volunteers are Muntinlupa, Taguig, Pateros, Caloocan, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon.
But something really bugs me, why is Jolly Recreation Center so prominent in Osmarender?

Keep on mapping guys!
The skiing season is almost upon us, with The Lecht and Cairngorm having opened for last weekend. I was aware of some problems with contour rendering on OpenPisteMap, but now it seems it is affecting the rendering of the actual pistes too. Comparing 2 zoom levels of the same area:
http://openpistemap.org/?lat=46.09542&lon=7.24663&zoom=14&layers=B000
http://openpistemap.org/?lat=46.09542&lon=7.24663&zoom=15&layers=B000
Some of the pistes just aren't rendering in some zoom levels.
My only guesses are that either Mapnik or the PostGIS spatial index is broken. Unfortunately, if it is the latter I suspect I'll have to drop the whole database and start from scratch. :(
An idea for ya.
I went on to Google News.. did a search for 'OpenStreetMap' then down at the bottom it gives you options. You can subscribe to the RSS Feed of it and add it to your Google Reader, and also add a iGoogle Gadget. This way, you will always be up-to-date on where and when OpenStreetMap is making the news :)
... But hopefully where will be a way for wiki.openstreetmap.org to be able to show a news feed :)
...
So at least for me, this helps in keeping me motivated to keep on mapping, and passing the hurdles(mostly technical) so then the map book can be made :) Its great to see whats being accomplished so far.
Cheers,
Happy Mapping
I went to visit my girlfriend in Hamburg over the weekend. Whilst I was there, we took the GPS and digital camera for a walk around a redeveloped gasworks. They've kept the original gasworks buildings and cleaned them up, putting in new interiors. The site now has a couple of hotels, a couple of restaurants, office space, residential flats, shops and a small park. Lots of features to map in a small space! The previous OSM coverage for this area was good but not complete. Google Maps coverage is also incomplete here; the redevelopment may mean that things have changed relatively recently, although interestingly the omissions in the two maps were very different.
There was already existing work in this area, so I set out to improve what was already there and fill in the gaps. It looked like quite a lot of tracing from Yahoo had been done already (building outlines, etc). I made some tweaks to this data - the Yahoo imagery seems slightly inaccurately positioned, so I aligned it to some reasonably consistent parts of my GPS tracing and then moved some of the existing features a small distance to better correspond to this. This is not a major visual difference but hopefully makes things slightly more accurate. Since the Yahoo imagery is slightly from the side of the buildings, I moved some of the outlines to correspond better with the footprint of the buildings, rather than the rooflines.
We paced round many unmapped footways, noted the positions of bicycle parking, steps, some unmapped roadways, playgrounds, etc. I also got some address details for some the buildings and tagged those too. When I got home I uploaded these changes, plus a load of extra tracing from Yahoo that I was able to do now that I understood how things looked on the ground.
