Well, I haven't done a diary in ages, but I've been doing tons of GPS traces, and have recently started to do mapping again. Unfortunately, it's just in time for the cold weather, which means mapping will be restricted in scope.

Toronto has continued to fill out, and quite nicely. I have to start mapping the surrounding area a bit, and do some infill to make sure all of the streets are done. It's coming along.

As a first test balloon for mapping with compass and distance, I choose two locations: Piazza della Riforma and Via Nassa, both in Lugano's old town.

But before I could start, I needed to calibrate the step counter. For that one needs a known distance. Conveniently, the railways station is on the way and, even more conveniently, the length of a train is written on its side. So I found out that my average step is 85 cm long. Verification along the same train showed that it was off by less than a meter along the 75 m long train. Good enough.

Downtown I started with Piazza Riforma. I GPSed a reference point in the wide open, sketched the piazza and then took directions and distances. Afterwards, on the computer, it turned out that some of the directions are as much as 30 degrees off. Whether this is me not yet knowing the compass well enough or this is just the normal deviation of a compass, needs to be determined.

Via Nassa went altogether a lot better. There already is a trace of it in the map. My newly determined course is extremely close to that one, except in some parts where the old one was clearly wrong. Oddly enough, on the last bit very close to Piazza Riforma the direction was off by about 15 degrees yet again.

So, next thing is to try the piazza again, maybe with a couple of extra GPS-based reference points and some more care when taking directions.

It looks like all 3 maps to a great job of mapping the area...
I noticed that Mapnik got the Bastion Street Bridge right. cool.
and osmarender got the International Hostel in there right. Cool.
and the Cycle map got the Bike shop in there right. Cool.

Fortunately over the next few months, i'll be learning how to configure my own rendering, when i use the SVG file. (I think its a matter of including some lines of code, to get more things added) So when they show up in book form, it would be nice to have it the 'most right' as possible.

So i think my example is pritty good to show what shows up on each map, to perhaps remind some people that the OSM database can contain TONNES of info.. but it's doesnt all need to be rendered. .... so it just depends on who will be using the map. :)

P.S. does anyone happen to know if someone has already started a planet sized map of just the SRTM topo data? ... IMG files just like the ones Computerteddy has? .. so it's 1 degree x 1 degree tiles, done to the standard zoom levels.
Im planning on starting over on the West coast of Vancouver Island, and working my way across... but would be nice if someone else has already done the autoscript for it. Thanks.

Hi,

today there are new bug lists (at least for Germany). There are significantly more bugs listed than before:

osm.wiki/index.php/OSB_Reports

Here you can see what was done in the last week at some places:

osm.wiki/index.php/Osmdiff_reports

Please note that there is a version 1.1 of the program now - if you run reports yourself. v1.0 hat a little bug...

Also "Unmapped Places" (Germany) has been updated:

I have collected Bus stop position of line 1, 2 and 7 in Madrid Spain. Today I began to transfer these data to OSM (Bus lines 1 and 2). Bus line number is visible in the note field and bus stop name in ... name field
osm.org/?lat=40.419254&lon=-3.692764&zoom=18&layers=B000FTF
Waiting to see how Osmarender will render that. It is a pity Mapnlk do not shows Bus Stop...

After I found answers to my questions, I started mapping the international cycle route "Euro Route R1" in Poland.
The signposts there are maintained by PTTK, you cycle on the normal road.

I did not take any notes which means I used highway=road when I was not sure. I used a tag not saying anything.
While writing (and thinking) about it, I think it makes more sense to tag highway=tertiary even if it may be residential or secondary sometimes.

It happened a few times that there was no pavement but sand. Still it was the only connection between some smaller villages. What would be the appropriate tag if I remembered the sections?

Yesterday, I picked up where I was interupted last time and strolled a bit through Parco Ciani. Today I followed up by mapping pretty much all streets west of the old town. There is only Via Gialli left, which is along my way to work, so could be done next week, too, if the weather is holding up.

Once downtown, I went and bought a couple of new gadgets: a compass, a hard-cover sketch block, and a step counter. The latter was an accident, as they had one on sale at Manor. Now I am ready for a proper mapping of the old town.

I have been in a discussion about whether or not places that are officially cities should be tagged as cities even with a population of 40 000 and lower.

My idea is that if you don't tag them city, you adding false date to OSM. And that the renderers should use the population tag to decide how large and on what zoom level a name should be placed.

An other thing about places where there seems to be a disagreement is on what should be tagged, villages/cities... or municipalities.

My idea here is that it should be villages/cities and that municipalities should be areas as they contain more than one village.

I've been trying to fill in some more of the alleyways between terraces and semis near my home. These are generally unsignposted and often unpaved. Looking at one from the street it's pretty hard to tell if it's just a path to a couple of garden gates or if it in fact goes all the way through. There are a lot of these and because they pass so close to the buildings, it's been very helpful to have the Yahoo imagery to help refine my GPS-ing results.

I think it's going quite well, next thing I'll need to find some more! Interestingly, some blocks of houses in the area seem to not feature through-paths at all, whilst others are full of them. Weird!

I'm glad to put these on the map as without some guidance it's very hard to know where these go! I wonder if they're strictly public, private or what; the land could be council-owned or part owned by the adjoining properties.

I also found a little playground tucked away whilst refining a path that currently overlapped a building location.
