I became involved with mapping as I attended one of the seminars that was conducted at IRDP in August 2017 where I learned how to use maps me and open street map as at first I was interested on mapping through my G.I.S studies that made it more interesting for me and Also am interested on mapping as its I want to make the world a better place through mapping I believe all will be possible as mapping helps in addressing several development issue and through mapping development can be archived.

I joined HOT as a volunteer to Ramani Huria project 1.0 when I was a fourth year student at Ardhi University in 2015. I got an opportunity to learn data collection by GPS, JOSM and producing maps by using QGIS software. Later, I became one of the mapping supervisors and I regularly transferred mapping knowledge to university students and community members.There are details of this project here http://ramanihuria.org/ Am currently in charge of the mini-grids project. I attend mapping parties and am looking forward to attend State of Map Africa that will be held in December this year at Dar es Salaam. HOT is an organization that supports community mapping projects around the world and assists people to create their own maps for socio-economic development and disaster preparedness and I real want to support it in any way I can. I would like to participate in other community mapping projects in other regions apart from Dar es Salaam. I see a challenge of little knowledge on the uses of maps in solving socio-economic problems and I am ready to participate in creating awareness.

It is my group that inspired me to join the OSM team, The group is found at University of Dar es Salaam So me as a part of a big OSM team up to now i would like to engage more and more in mapping activities as the part of solving problems, I have participated in many mapping events with Dar Ramani Huria and so on, it was wonderful moments to meet wit other mappers from different teams, exchanging ideas, enjoying etc., and hence mapping became my favorite task .

Me as youthmapper I became interested and involved in mapping activies so that i can help HOT as volunteer to map the remote area and to elaborate the problem our sociery is facing in our days. As I am a Rwandan YouthMappers leader, and as a whole team, we expected to carry out the Rwanda Refugee Camps mapping project so that we can help the government of Rwanda to ensure the security and basic services to the refugees and to help UNCHR to provide their services to the target population in easy way. We are working hard with HOT so that we can achieve on our target. however we are still little, we are working too hard as committed mappers and kind volunteers.

The first time to hear mapping issues is when i join my bachelor degree in URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT PLANNING at Institute of Rural Development Planning-DODOMA, i got few knowledge on QGIS from our modules but i didn’t know where to get more and practical knowledge of mapping.Unfortunately Dr. Bashemela introduces Youth Mappers Chapter at our institute and i decided to join on the chapter. I thank Mr. Benedicto Hosea for the training on how to add points through maps.me app and how to edit some points by using Open street map and their importance which i didn’t know before. Through the training am able to add and edit some points until now i have 21 points including points features like football play ground at Binza high school- Maswa district and 20 polygon features i.e. residential houses and shops at Mvomero district. Mapping is very important because it helps the community to get assist from neighboring country for any problem. We will continue adding and editing points especially linear features to make the rural Tanzania Known in the world.Many thanks to madam Janeth Chapman and their authority for this opportunity to me and i encourage women to work up and play with this opportunity, i will work very hard to make sure many points are added.

Mapping is seen to be advancing over the years with the introduction of spatial science and technology in developing countries which was rarely in use. This advancement should now help with the solving lot of local problems associated land in the Developing Africa. As i have said, ‘local problems’ .The frontiers for solving these problems should be the African youth. As an African,A mapper,member of IRDPyouth mappers, an Enviroment planner, i urge all my fellow youth to be not only members of OSM, but to do it with passionate to their Mamaland.

While editing across the world, I noticed that France (among other countries) uses “admin_level=10” relations to mark administrative boundaries beyond towns. Should we use this in the United States? Feel free to discuss, as I’m not even sure on if we should use it here.

This project was carried out in February 2016 by UBOS in collaboration with HOT, It focused on mapping financial inclusions in Uganda. This project mainly involved university students with the aim of adding hospitals, schools, banks and mobile money centres on to the map which would change peoples’ lives because they easily accessed these services. This inspired me to contribute to this project because it was transforming lives.The HOT team trained students on how to use the different tools and soft wares used during mapping for example JOSM, ODK collect, GIS which were used in this project. i was able to add various financial inclusions using these soft wares

Hi. I’d like to ask you to the Metro Mapping proposal page, read it in full and leave your vote below. The proposal mostly summarises subway and light rail mapping practices and introduces a few useful changes, listed in “What This Affects” section.

You will find many opposing votes there. You might be tempted to read only these comments and skip studying the material. It is simpler, and some of the authors are well-known in the community: they must know what they are talking about, right? And there are 8 screens of text, who would read that?

That is what I don’t like in the current proposal system. It does not matter what the proposal actually contains, how deep an author knows the topic or if the features in questions are already mapped in a suggested way. What a great power you have when the voting starts — strike out weeks of work by writing a few words! You must be a fool not to excercise that power. And who knows what might happen if the proposal is approved? Everybody understands you cannot edit a wiki page after that. You would need to write your own proposal, and it might be rejected, so it is safer to just oppose.

For the first time in OpenStreetMap history I started actually using the data to route users through subways. And found out the tagging is insufficient: there was no sane way to map interchanges, and you could put thousands of members into some relations. For a mapper things also looked bleak: to map a subway properly, you would have to know how underground tracks go, and where underground platforms are located. No wonder that a beta version of a validator showed that the world had like three subway systems mapped good enough, out of nearly two hundred.

For the first time, I became engaged in mapping training that was conducted by Ms Janet Chapman in January 2017, while before that I had no any idea about mapping and I sought several times what ways can I do to ensure that at least I am able to create one map about the districts, wards and villages where we are working with communities here in Shinyanga region. Exposure to the “OpenStreetMap” was a bit a solution and a new downy to me and helped us at least to come out with some of points where social services are located which currently we use for referral and support of our target groups. Additionally, mapping by using mobile phones (smartphone) became to simplify the exercise and I was able to map a lot of points within the same time and uploads the data. However, this I consider it to the great opportunity for me, community and national at large for locating various points including social services, buildings, infrastructure networks, landscapes and existence of various natural resources.

An escalation of violence in South Sudan since July 2016 has led to a large population movement into the north of neighboring Uganda. An estimated rate of between 2,000 and 3,000 displaced persons cross the border into Uganda each day. In a rapidly developing situation such as this, it is vital that accurate and up-to-date mapping information is available to allow the ERU to respond more effectively and efficiently.

I have had a chance to contribute to mapping against malaria campaign, through mapathons and in my personal free time. And during this campaign have been able to contribute in different countries of Africa and south Asia. Namely, Mali, Laos, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, Cambodia.

During this time I managed to be part of the top contributors (4th) and also managed to contribute on a single project 840 tiles as a milestone. This has been one of my drives to keep contributing as I feel happy giving a hand where I can. Abstract

This is a project that was pioneered by the leadership of 2016/17 Good Mappers as a YouthMappers Chapter at Busitema University. The Chapter looked at how they can involve the community around them to know what they do, thus teaching OSM to Students of Secondary schools so that by the time they join University they can contribute to the cause and also apply the knowledge they learn in real life due to their young and creative minds.

I became involved in the project by first surveying the surrounding community for potential environment to be able to TeachOSM. Looking at Internet Access, having a computer Laboratory as these would aid the performance of the project.

We were able to narrow down to Tororo Girls School as our first secondary school for the project before we can venture to other surrounding secondary schools.

Currently we carry out weekly training at the school with the help of the ICT department and Geography Department of the School.
