Hi,

just a question as greenhorn. Last week I uploaded a first GPS trace. I got the email that the upload was done. Going to potlatch I was also able to see the way I have uploaded. Afterwards I edited one street. This was last thurstday, till today the street is not displayed in the common map although visible in Potlatch. How long does it take until the street is visible in the common map or did I make any mistake.

Kind regards

Bernd

Today I started moving a Drupal website from using google and gmap to openstreetmap. Ugh, the process is ugly and horrible using existing modules - to the extent that it would almost have been easier to just write some php from scratch. However, the first step of displaying locations is now complete.

It took installing the mappingkit module (http://drupal.org/project/mappingkit) module, specifically the Map assist, map client, map context, map layer, mapping kit, openlayers map client and wms modules.

Then a context is needed, just let it create the default ones and then edit to your location (I just need a bounding box covering UK)

Then a layer is needed, just create one and don't argue about the fact that you're never going to use it.

Then you need to ensure your data is available through a public geo-encoded rss feed.

Then you can use map assist to create a macro for the map.

Finally, you can edit the macro to use a sensible zoom and center setting. Leaving me with: [map context="node/37/context" baselayers="osm, none" layers="1" 1="georss|event/feed|events" zoom="8" center="-1.28264,53.57226" width="700" height="400" /]

I really dislike javascript and openlayers coding, so I'm not the person to make this much simpler and I'm really not looking forward to switching the geoencoding modules to something open.

Added a few more street names. I've been noting them down when I'm being passengered around in the car. Populated some of Calamvale on Brisbane's south side, and added a few roads and street names near Caloundra.

Noting that the satellite imagery is really freakin' old, and there's a lot more data missing than I initially thought. I'd love to crack out the GPS and do some amateur mapping some time, and I'm planning a trek around the Boondal wetlands/nudgee bike tracks some time over the next few weeks.

Today I went for a mapping ride through the Jesmond Bushland in Newcastle, NSW. The area is council land that's reserved for public recreation, but there's nothing official that allows MTB trail building and maintenance. Either way there's nothing to prohibit MTB'ers from riding there :).

Anyway, I just mapped as much as possible until the water ran out. A good chunk of the trails got surveyed, but there's still a lot of trails that need to be discovered. I'd approximate that, in terms of track distance, the area is about 50% surveyed.

Use OSMARender to view. At the time of writing only a small section has been rendered.

Got a hold of a PDF map of Santo Domingo and have started to name many of the streets. My first objective is to name all the streets in Sto. Dog. and then start the maping of many streets which you can see on the satellite map.

Hope I can finish this map in six months. Thanks to Openmap devs and comunity for this great effort.

aktualisiert.

I made an interesting discovery while verifying streets near my neighborhood in San Diego. There was about a mile's worth of streets charted in one little area that simply didn't appear in Yahoo's aerial imagery, so I investigated them in person. Turns out they really *aren't* there. I placed a marker to mark the imaginary intersection of Buchanan and Oklahoma Streets, roughly the center of the place where they all appeared before I corrected the map.

In reality, the phantom "streets" traced the contours of little valleys in the canyon by the neighborhood. Some of the streets just extended existing streets far beyond their real length, others (such as the aforementioned Buchanan and Oklahoma) seem to have been made up entirely.

Where did those streets come from? Not sure. But I learned a little more about the history of the data, and that may lend itself to some guesses. I found San Diego's GIS data, and it shows the same phantom streets that were in the TIGER data--so it seems to follow that the TIGER data came from the City of San Diego. A historical note accompanying the data mentions that the it was originally compiled by the local gas and electric utility (SDG&E), then handed over to the city government in 1990.

Maybe the utility company invented those streets to watch out for anyone leaking their data? Or, as my wife suggests, maybe the streets were planned streets that never came into being? or roads that once existed but are gone now? I guess I will have to look up some older maps at the library to solve the mystery.

I've been meaning to contribute to OSM for a long time now and finally got round to it today. I've wired the car with a GPS antenna and an old PII Toughbook together with a garmin GPS to log GPS data wherever I go.

My intent is to initially add traces and data for my home area. I've also tried JOSM and find it very useful and fairly easy to learn.

OSM is a fantastic concept. Long live OSM

Ciao
