Uzice is a town in the Zlatibor district, in the Republic of Serbia. According to the 2011 census report, there were 52,646 inhabitants.

It lies on the banks of the river Djetinje. The medieval ruins of the then very important city have been preserved. Uzice was the seat of the Partisan army in the fall of 1941. In 1946, the name was changed to Tito’s Uzice in honor of Josip Broz Tito, and the old name was returned in 1992.

Uzice is a major center of the metal and machinery industry and fruit growing. Administrative center of the municipality of the same name and Zlatibor district.

Just look at the difference, how it looks now & how it did look before the change was made to a map:

  • prof. dr hab. Jerzy Robert Ładny - Konsultant Krajowy w dziedzinie medycyny ratunkowej
  • dr n. med Wiktor Kuliczkowski - Konsultant wojewódzki ds. kardiologii (dolnośląskie)
  • prof. dr hab. n. med. Andrzej Wysokiński - Konsultant wojewódzki ds. kardiologii (lubelskie)
  • dr hab. n. med. Łukasz Balwicki - Konsultant wojewódzki ds. zdrowia publicznego (pomorskie)
  • prof. dr hab. n. med. Marianna Janion - Konsultant wojewódzki ds. kardiologii (świętokrzyskie)

Jednocześnie przebudowaliśmy i rozbudowaliśmy stronę projektu.

This morning was our first (ever?!) OpenStreetMap meetup in Perth, Western Australia. Six of us turned up at the Goods Shed cafe (near the railway station) for introductions, coffee, and a general figuring-out of a plan. Then we headed off in small groups around the local area, mapping footpaths, shops, businesses, trees, drinking fountains, and everything else we could find.

I have seen on tagging mailing list and some other places claims that deprecated tagging schemes continuing to be used are a critical issue.

I also have seen claims that having two tags with the same meaning is a critical issue that cause very big problems.

In my experience as mapper, someone working on OSM editors, someone working with OSM data:

Deprecated tagging schemes continuing to be used are not a big problem or a serious issue.

There are some tags that should be never used ( osm.wiki/Key:class:bicycle is a good example of something that is pure waste of time, see for example https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/issues/2210#issuecomment-726974964 ).

But pointless tags can be completely ignored if they are truly bad ideas.

Note that popular tag which is not fundamentally bad idea and someone wishes to get rid of them is just regular duplicated tag for basically all purposes.

Duplicated tags with the same meaning.

For data consumer it is not a big issue. It is a bit annoying, but as long as new tags do not keep appearing then simple alias solves approximately all the problems.

It can be described as a problem but is definitely not in top 10 issues for data consumer. Maybe not even in top 50.

And is basically eliminated by decent documentation, if one exists at OSM Wiki.

For implementing it in editor - it depends on an exact case and definitely can be annoying.

But the worst part is case when group A demands to deprecate one tag, and group B demands to deprecate tag B. Or when one group accuses someone of being destructive because they followed documentation/consensus that documented some tag as deprecated/not deprecated and situation suddenly changed and another group appeared.

Overall this is quite ironic: people wishing to deprecate, rename, change tags often argue to be doing it to help data consumers.

Summary

For my first diary post, I’ll go into the ongoing dispute in the highway class tagging in one of my focus areas, the south-central San Joaquin Valley, particularly regarding rural four-lane roads in Fresno and Tulare counties.

Background

Traditionally, highway=trunk is used in the US for expressways and controlled-access roads with fewer than 4 lanes, though tagging standards vary from place to place. highway=primary is the typical tag in California for state routes, while highway=secondary is usually used for signed county routes, of which Tulare County has many.

In urban areas, the California OSM Wiki page also recommends using highway=secondary for roads with 4 lanes and highway=primary for roads with 6+ lanes.

The issue

When the rural 4-lane roads were remapped to reflect their divided 4-lane status (with the exception of Mooney Boulevard/CA 63, this was largely done by me), I generally tagged them as secondaries, with the rationale that they were clearly more important than the standard county roads (which I was generally tagging as tertiaries at the time). Since then, many of them had been upgraded to trunks by a single editor, which led to a pair of reversions when I tried to downgrade them again.

The current state

After a recent changeset, most of the non-state route four-lane rural roads (except for Golden State Highway and Mountain View Avenue) are now tagged as primaries. The Mountain View trunk tagging continues into Tulare County as Avenue 416, then turns south on Road 80 toward CA 198. The entire route of CA 65 in Tulare County (except for the freeway segment in Porterville) is also tagged as a trunk, even the 2-lane portions. The remaining four-lane rural roads in Tulare County are either primaries or secondaries.

My (originally) suggested solution

My (original) preference is to classify highways using a combination of importance and construction. With that said, here’s what I would do here.

Serwer OSM - Autoryzacja konto

I travelled to Eaton Socon to visit a shop and decided the have have a short walk. I found a bench and stopped to eat a banana and take a drink. It was only 2c. Luckily the air was fairly still otherwise may not have smelt gas, I asked a passerby if she could confirm it but she said she couldn’t. Several hours later i compared what I had seen on may walk to OSM and remembered the gas smell and Goggled “ gas smell” and the suggested action. I rang the number and explained what I had noticed. Thirty minutes later an engineer rang to ask for first hand description and location, I gave him the details, using OSM to remind me of what was around, I asked if he would let me know the result he he did find a problem. An hour later he called again and confirmed there was a leak and it seemed to be from the gas main under road and would probably be a major disruptive problem to fix.
