To celebrate mapping Cramlington by bicycle, I decided to treat myself to a new steed. After Wiggle delivered a large box containing a new Focus Red Falls, I have been itching to get out and about on the newly mapped Cramlington Cycleway Network.

Tonight, I decided to ignore the 7C air temperature and winter night to do something different. Starting at Cramlington, I followed National Cycle Route 1 down past Horton Grange, and through new housing developments to Blyth Adsa. What is normally a horrible place to visit by car (bad traffic!), is well appointed with excellent cycleways.

Coming back though Bebside, I decided against the easy route and turned off past an old civic amenity site to follow an old road pre-dating the modern A189 trunk route.

Pedalling along on tarmac being slowly reclaimed by nature, my head torch was the only shaft of light piercing the winter night. Slowing only where a flash of hedge showed a sharp bend, the cold night was quickly forgotten as the exhilaration of exploring the unknown took hold.

The orange sodium skyglow of Cramlington confirmed the Garmin GPS was pointing true, as eerie pinpricks of light appeared. Ah- horses have white eyes!

The glow from The Three Horse Shoes pub looked inviting, but I left the empty picnic tables and headed for home.

Hathery Lane is now mapped. Unused by vehicles for many years, but a great short cut for cycles.

Thank you to all who replied last week. I still have more questions (below)...

First, some of my reflections on the Manchester mapping party that ran over the weekend.I have now been out with a (borrowed)GPS and made a minor contribution to the map. I took a lot of photos as I wandered round what I now realise wasn't a particularly large part of a network of paths within a park, not really sure as I started out what was worth capturing and what might/not make a valid contribution to the map. So I tried to note everything: signposts, cafe's, (permanent)ice cream stand, phonebox, CCTV cameras, animal enclosures/pens within a farm area, open spaces, children's playground, a tunnel, small bridges crossing back and forth over a stream, historic buildings/ Blue Plaques (English Heritage)etc. And then my camera battery ran out, so I had to stop taking photos and start writing notes and taking waypoints. When I returned to the mapping party base, and watched the event organiser re-draw over the tracks, it was fairly satisfying to watch a blank space get filled in, albeit only a small amount.

The main difference in my mapping technique/ practice from that of many (perhaps the majority of?) people, as far as I can tell from the responses I have had via this diary, is that I did not go out mapping alone. I went out in a group of three. Two friends of mine from the University (one male, one female) and I (female) walked around the park together, each with a GPS, walking (for the most part) together and reflecting on the mapping activity and our surroundings as we went along.
So, as a result, we generated three, near identical tracks, with two of us taking the same or similar waypoints. What exactly was the point of this doubling, or tripling up of GPS tracks? Surely a waste of valuable mapping time that could have been spent covering a larger area of the park? Would that not have been a more productive use of our afternoon?

Just added a number of footpaths that I had the pleasure to walk over the weekend in the Wye Valley area between Tintern and Chepstow. There's a reasonable amount of mapping data in this area already, but a lot of it seems to be from the NPE maps and either out of date or inaccurate. For example the boundaries of wooded areas don't match with what we found on the ground in all places. There's a lot more mapping that can be done in this area, including more paths, accurate outlines of woodland, disused railways, quarries and so forth. It's a beautiful area for walking in and quite easy to get lost in the woodlands - especially where there is a high density of paths going in different directions. Definitely warrants a return journey.

Today I went for a nice good cycle around with my GPS unit, surveyed in many streets, a few nice parks, and lots of hidden footpath / mountain bike tracks (I walked with my road bike along these nasty but fun tracks).

Late last week I surveyed in some of the southern part of Eltham, weird streets and paths all over the place.
As well as a few paths and streets around Montmorency.

It's good to discover new and interesting places, some hidden paths. :D

Finally all data collected from a longer trip is in OSM. This includes some streets in Jayapura, Sentani, Biak and Wamena. On Pulau Biak some cross-island roads can be found.

Kupang is much more complete by now, although the finding of street names is still troublesome.

Hallo,
