I didn't think I would have a use for OSM's built-in diary feature. I have my own personal/tech blog at vaes9 (http://vaes9.codedgraphic.com/) where I have written several pieces about OpenStreetMap. But lately I thought that it would be interesting to write down here the minutiae of my activities while contributing to OpenStreetMap--things that my regular blog audience might find utterly boring. At least here in OSM, I can be assured that people reading the diary would be somewhat interested (at least I hope so!).

So welcome. :-)

I'm new to OSM. I have lately been correcting and adding detail to the Altrincham map using the Yahoo aerial photo and lunchtime wanderings for street names, etc. I'll shortly be getting a TYTN II phone with GPS and I hope to install some tracking software. My plan then is to map a little more of the uncharted west of the town (including my own estate which does not feature at all at the moment).

This is my first diary entry, although I'm already mapping for quite a while. The map of Quebec City and its surroundings made a lot of progress last summer. It's no longer the white spot it used to be :) At the moment I'm drawing roads in JOSM in the Charlesbourg area, so they should show up soon. This Thanksgiving weekend I hope to be able to finish the secondary roads on the south shore with a few trips (east of 55 / 161, the rest is for my big friend Yves in Sherbrooke). The south shore is beautiful with all the maples bearing wonderful colours! Hopefully the much narrower north shore will be done before winter kicks in.

It's really amazing all the little things you notice when you do mapping. Most maps I've seen (including my first try) give Bellerive St. going all the way up to connect with George-V Av. However, that street in fact stops at Gonthier Av., oner corner short, and it's connected to George-V via a short service street spur.

The Oxford portion of OSM might well be getting some mapping help from the fine members of the local cycling campaign group Cyclox. Back in late September I was contacted out of the blue by the University's Sustainable Transport Officer who is working with Cyclox to help improve (upon) the county council's old, rather unhelpful cycle map of the city. To quote: "I think something based upon OSM and the OpenCycleMap is the way to go".

This is awesome news because Cyclox are a decidedly enthusiastic and committed group, because the association will raise the profiles of both groups, and because there's the possibility of some involvement from the university (who want useful maps of good bike routes taking in colleges, departments, and noting parking in those places). There might be some nice printed maps based on OSM data coming out of this.

It's early days yet, but feedback from an informal meetup over lunch and a committee meeting I've attended seems positive. Next step is a little presentation at their AGM, and then I think a series of little workshops and mapping mini-parties to get people up-to-speed with our processes and out improving the map. I dare say there'll be further meetings working on the details of what Cyclox need and what the University needs. Now I just need to learn Mapnik and figure out a custom rendering to show off how easy it is to subset and snapshot the OSM data nicely to meet those needs.

Since completing the Armidale City map some months ago I've been picking off unclassified rural roads since then.

Last Sunday I collected 600 km of tracks north-west of Armidale. Much of this was new roads and the remainder was used to replace Landsat generated roads. The latter was inaccurate in many places as road re-alignment has since taken place.

The route was Armidale, Booloolong, Longford, Baldersleigh, Bundarra, Bingara, Terry Hie Hie, Moree, Warialda, Delungra, Inverell, Tingha, Guyra, Armidale.

Hi,

I hacked a little bit more. This time output is a list of bugs listed in Openstreetbugs. Currently for Germany. You can find the GPX version (can be used i.e. in JOSM or Mapsource etc.) here:

osm.wiki/index.php/OSB_Reports

Soon I will publish an HTML file with the same content and links to OSM, OSB and JOSM. Of course the program, written in PERL, will be published if it looks good enough.

Cheers
