Sometimes these are actually unnamed, or haven't been assigned one yet (maybe?); is there a way to distinguish these from the roads that we just don't know about yet? 'cos otherwise different people could end up making a point to visit them again and again, only to find out there is no listed name to see anywhere or they're too small to be noted as one.

People using the map might also think it doesn't look good to see roads without names (if they don't know its unnamed), or if you're on one of these roads and trying to figure out where the hell you are; you could spend ages looking for a name somewhere without realising its a fruitless search. If you knew it didnt list one, you'd then be able to hunt out another landmark earlier like postboxes with the ref. no (ok, just my personal thing!) or telephone box and its number (again...), or a pub/road crossing it/... You get the point.

So, has this been considered before?

Should I post on the wiki rather than suggest here?

name=unnamed/false/no/-1 doesn't work as programs won't know (although -1 isnt too bad, but its not consistent/following convention enough for me); unnamed=true might be ok.

PS: I asked in my immediate-last post about how to get a map of unnamed roads. I know you can search in josm for "label:highway -label:name" or similar; not sure how to convert that into tiles/a download for one of the progs I use on my phone (j2me, current faves are WhereAmI+ and GMJ, but Mom also possible). ie. in gpx or similar for waypoints (maybe start/end points? dunno how I'd do it).. Or tiles that I can hack into one of their db's.

I had a go at whole residential development (+museums) last time I went to see my friend by the river; but my gps wasn't getting a good lock (inexperienced user + too-cloudy weather) so I went round a few roads again and actually got data good enough to create the missing streets on. Its one of the few areas around there that's missing a lot of detail, and almost none of the road names are filled in (well, I did several from memory but had to correct how far some of them went and when they became other roads this time). I feel privileged to be in a position to update it, like a little hidden secret that noone else got here first amongst a generally fairly-well-covered (the basics anyway) town. Anyone else get like that?

So its mostly done, added barriers in and the pier there - tag man_made=pier, but not sure how to go about marking it more specifically for the water way for thames clippers; have the open times somewhere in another pic taken ages ago when I was there more regularly and making use of it, but I know its changed a bit since. Just have to fix the east end of it, can't remember how far Duke of Wellington Avenue goes and it's a bit more of a walk...

Google data is horrible here too (unless the normal web client doesnt show everything at full zoom), missing names, roads too short/long, names in the wrong places and so on, roads that just dont seem to correlate all that well with what I know/see; so a great win for OSM!

I was in London yesterday for a few hours, meeting some friends. I managed to place a few bus stops (on Westminster Bridge and on Whitehall, though my coverage of these is neither pinpoint accurate nor comprehensive), a zebra crossing near Embankment and a couple of telephone boxes near County Hall).

A shame I couldn't do more but I didn't want to hold up the large group of non-mappers I was with ;-) At least I found out that it was quite practical to carry a GPS and camera with me and gather some odd bits of data when I'm in an unfamiliar city and busy with other things. I wasn't able to do a huge amount but I was still able to help a bit!

Have been continuing to trace in buildings, paths, drainage, trees from a combination of the Yahoo satellite view, local knowledge and observations from previous GPS-ing trips. I've been tagging bus stops (and on the occasions when they're missing, Post Offices and Post Boxes) and also telephone boxes (although I don't think these currently appear on any renderings, which is a shame). I've also tried to put in some farm / field boundaries I knew about where possible.

Despite Cambridge's amazingly detailed state (thanks to others - particularly David Earl) there's still plenty of useful information I can contribute, even on the fully streetmapped sections. So anybody who's looking for some mapping but thinks there's nothing to do in their local area - look again. There's *always* something you can add, either using local knowledge, GPS, NPE or Yahoo!

I have begun to correct tiger data in the east Orlando Florida area. It looks like anything over about 10-15 years old is really bad accuracy. Both location, an scale are off. I have been placing the roads to Yahoo sat images which match well with some test GPS tracks.

Missing data I'm just tracing from Yahoo, and hope to come back and add street data at a later date as I get out and about with a gps and camera.

- Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li-2727, 2GB RAM, built-in Wifi ; - NAVILOCK NL-302U (USB, I think you could guess it ;-)) GPS receiver, which runs out of the box (really!) - NAVILOCK NL-65AT MMCX GPS Accessory Antenna (that I can't use!) ; - Maxxtro 150W Mobile Power Inverter [DC --> AC] (really useful to power all this equipment in the car :-)) ; ... oh yeah! and an indispensable small punger, that comes with the GPS receiver! - Last but not least, my Panasonic DMC-FZ7 camera for mapping information and for "art" :-D (see my photographs on Flickr : www.flickr.com/photos/freebourg/)

Ubuntu Linux ; the usual tools 'gpsd', 'gpxlogger', 'gpsbabel' do the thing very well. For mapping, I'm using JOSM (retrieving, building and using the svn version every time I use it), the appropriate photo plugin, and GPicSync for the "normal" photographs. While geocaching on foot or by bicycle, I try to make the battery duration longer by doing some tricks [www.lesswatts.org] and almost killing every unnecessary program running and shutting down all wireless devices (Wifi (unload the kernel module, turn it off via the BIOS (?) option by sending 0 to the wireless led 'dev' file ('acerhk' module), Bluetooth). Then, I stop gdm (killing X), open tty1, sudo gpsd..., open tty2 gpxlogger, and go! Sometimes, for fun, I do some wardriving/warcycling/warcycling, and instead of gpxlogger I use kismet that give me logs in several formats, ready to be used. Afterwards I create a Google Earth KML from the Kismet XML to see the networks, and export the GPX (what a great and simple format!) to my "big monitor computer" ;-)

The day before yesterday ("avant-hier"), I took my bicycle and had a 2 hours ride around "Bois d'Amont". My battery was estimated to work more 60% by returning home! It was the first time I worked with JOSM. That's a great tool. I'm actually retrieving, building and using the svn version everyday, and can't find a good reason to use Potlach instead! This work (drawing roads, crossing, parkings, churches, shops, restaurants, and giving them the right properties took me 4 hours! But I'm proud of it. Of course, there isn't any residential road (unless one I took to join a pedestrian/cycle path) but the main (tertiary road, but in fact called "route secondaire" in the French-speaking part of Switzerland) is there, right on the Osmarender! Today, I tried all my material in the car, between Ependes, where I didn't have got "Route de Sâles" (road) gps traces to map it, and the end of this little car trip was near Saint-Jean in Fribourg old town (Basse-Ville). I corrected some turns, by adding more points to them, making them look more circular, added some bridges, roundabouts. And it was fine!

Today I did a long trip to Schülp by bike, recorded a lot of data and made photos of street signs. Unfortunately all data seems to be lost somehow - mtkbabel can't read any data and the Windows programme (Datalog) that is distributed with the device is buggy and spits out error messages. So don't buy an iBlue 747, it seems to be bad quality (especially the Windows programme).
