After many attempts using various programmes in different modes, I have finally managed to create some decent routable maps for Ireland. I did it thus:

Gathered the data required using osmget.pl (http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=1162);
Combined the .osm maps that were downloaded using osmsort.pl;
Converted the combined map to .mp using osm2mp.pl;
Used mkgmap to convert it to .img format using --route.

Maps generated this way work brilliantly, except that when searching addresses, etc. using the on board menus, my nüvi 200W insists on using the Navteq maps that shipped with it to find as its source - even if these maps are disabled in the settings. Deleting them from the unit (after backing up to my computer, of course!) stops this from happening, but the OSM based maps don't seem to provide any information that will allow address searching at all - or so I thought…

After testing non-routable maps made by CloudMade (http://downloads.cloudmade.com/) and routable ones by Radomir Mucha-Kruczyński (http://emexes.powweb.com/osm/), I noticed that some information in the OSM maps can be used in the Garmin search menus for finding destinations. It seems that mkgmap is filtering them out - I bet there's a simple option that I'm not activating that will do this for me.

I also updated a spelling mistake I made in my last map edit - should be OK now!

P.S. I forgot to say that if you want more details on how I made my maps, just let me know and I'll try and explain the process!

Went and did my walk around Keperra this morning. Got everything in the area enclosed by Samford Road, Dawson Parade and the train line.

The area near the train station is a little fiddly. I think I'm going to have to map it out with a GPS because it's got a few roads missing, and I also missed some of the street names. The signage is quite strange in the area, and the roads seem to change names half way through. It's interesting.

In any case, I'm really happy with my efforts today and I'm looking forward to some more tonight.

habe Versucht

I haven't done much on OSM lately. Still, the Rugby map has improved, so it can't be just me working on it. :)

Motivation

OpenStreetMap is interesting as a collaborative project because:

  • it is visual, and therefore easy to show/explain to people,

  • it is very easy to contribute (compared to programming projects),

  • there is still potential for programming spin-offs,

  • OSM and its spin-offs can benefit society at large.

The 'spin-offs' are the main motivation for contributing towards a free (as in freedom) set of geodata rather than being content with what we already have. Existing maps are not free, and prevent reuse for interesting applications by society.

The simplest example of a spin-off would be a custom map. For example, take the map we use to show people the way to our meetings. Selecting an excerpt of a proprietary map and putting it as an image on our website or in a newsletter would generally not be permitted.

More complicated custom maps are possible - we can render new maps featuring only the specific types of features that we are interested in.

This scales all the way to custom online maps - there is an idea floating about to create a pub review website based around a custom OSM map, for instance. This would be a useful application which would only be possible because of the freedoms attached to the OSM data.

Vision for the end of 2009

It is difficult to set specific and realistic goals to judge our progress when dealing with the map data itself - I do not want to make comparisons against other maps, because this would both encourage copying and be difficult to achieve.

Instead, I propose some modest goals focused on OSM's role as a community project:

I took some names at Keperra (not Taringa!) today. I'm going to go for a bit of a meander tomorrow and get some more, hopefully fleshing out most of the streets nearby the south of the train station.

I'm also catching up with David Dean for some reconnaissance around Nudgee tomorrow night, which should be cool. I'm going to have to look into borrowing Dad's GPS and working out how best to capture geo data under Linux before that. Any suggestions in this department are very welcome.

Sitting onboard a vessel in Niteroí port waiting can be a bit boring. The vessel I work on have had to much dead time now, and we are running out of jobs to do while waiting for the next operation we are going to do offshore.
The problem with all this waiting is that I cannot go ashore with my GPS to survey some of the streets here in Niteroí, both because one officer have to be on the bridge, and because my GPS unit is back home. If this is going to continue than I will start bringing unit to work, so that I can get at least one street by a random stroll.
But in the mean time, I'll browse around the map with JOSM, looking for obvious bugs to report to OpenStreetBug, tracing rivers and lakes with landsat, OpenArealImages and Yahoo areals, and participating actively on the wiki (something I never have time for at home).
Another thing I can do from work is making relations, and have at the moment focused on Brazilian highways and borders. The problem there is that most highways still are incomplete and that we still are missing a lot of border data to draw complete borders around all the 26 Brazilian states. If somebody can get hold of a border data set we can use, please let me know, I will gladly help getting it in.

I went ahead and did a brute force fix on that area that annoyed me, even though I suspect it would still not get routed through properly (if only because I haven't added yet a link on the other side).

I traced both the school parking (note the "access=destination", which is, to my great surprise, correctly rendered, at least on Osmarender, but only for areas. Nodes are displayed as normal parkings) and the adjoining Park and ride, the various surrounding accesses (including the short stairs to the church while I was at it). Also threw in the newly erected concrete blocks (you know these things usually found on roadwork zones?) preventing improper parking.

...

*sigh* next time I guess I'll give up and just trace the church already...

It is odd how rendering data makes people want to add it more. I've found this with the OSM Inspector boundaries layer.

Take London for example, in mid-November, there were several boundary ways scattered across the capital, most with slightly differing tagging schemes. At this time, only my home borough, Sutton had an associating relation.

After a day's work, and a few minor fixes later, we arrived at a state where we had 10 boroughs fully complete and another 7 partially completed.

Today, we mountain biked all trails of St. Joseph Hill's Open Space Preserve in Los Gatos. I've added them to the map. One more local park that's been fully mapped for hiking and biking.
I also added a couple of trails in the nearby Almaden Quicksilver park (and deleted some ridiculous TIGER segments in the process.)

Добавих няколко от малките улички в жк Младост 1, подобрих кръстовищата (добавени означения за светофари). Редактирах и малко в Дървеница, използвайки "следата" която бях записал и качил преди няколко дена. Установих че е пипкава работа.
