Users' Diaries

Recent diary entries

Hi all,
I've been busy trying to make sure that everyone in Canada knows about the GeoBase import project.
I began sending messages (on here) to the different users I find that are contributing, so to make sure that all past contributors are aware. For new contributors, it's rather obvious when looking sat the Canada wiki page.
I also posted on the talk discussion list, as well as on OSGeo discussion.
I see that the announcement has been translated to Hebrew & German, if you see anywhere else it's been posted, please let me know. :)

Trying not to be a pain about this, but it's important that 2 things happen.
1 - that we put our heads together, to find a solution which can be duplicated across the board for all future imports.
2 - that everyone (who wants to) knows whats going on, making the process transparent, as this is the awesome power of Wiki.

Cheers,
Sam Vekemans

P.S. mapping wise, i saw that there are many parks that even with the Ibycus topo showing over the OSM data, has lots more work to be done :)

Since the Gravitystorm Cycle Map does not render ways tagged as highway=path, I have retagged a couple of ways that I had previously marked as highway=path. Both were simple dirt trails that apparently developed though simple usage.

One of the trails is a short-cut that links the Guadalupe River Trail to Component Drive, and from there to the Component VTA light rail station. I have since learned that this trial lies on a right of way the the City of San Jose either owns, or has easement rights to, and they have proposed to develop this corridor into a multi-use path: http://www.sjparks.org/Trails/ComponentTrail.htm. Therefore, I have retagged this trail as highway=cycleway.

The other trail is a bit murkier. I have no idea of its official status, but it leaves the eastern lobe of the Silver Creek Linear Park through a 20' hole in its southern fence, and then traverses property whose ownership I don't know to small clearing next to the creek. I retagged this one as highway=footway, since I suspect that this is how this trail is actually used.

Finally, I did some more clean up of the TIGER data in the Silver Creek neighborhood. Some have suggested that any way that has ever been edited should automatically have its tiger:review=no tag effectively cleared. But given my clean-up style, I think this would be a bad idea. When I'm cleaning up an area, I will often only clean up *part* of a way, not the entire way, since cleaning up a entire way may necessitate cleaning up a whole other chunk of map that I'm not ready to tackle yet.

I started tracing roads in and around the Oconnee nuclear plant today. I had been fixing the really bad TIGER imported power lines from Central, SC to the plant and got frustrated there was nothing there to connect to.

I hope the NHD import gets underway soon so I don't have to trace the lakes surrounding the plant.

Also a thought on potlache, if tracing/extending something tagged power=line where each node should indicate a tower, it would be nice if power=tower was added to each node as it was created. power=tower should also be in the auto-completes for nodes.

Around the same time a bridge from London to Porto (Portugal) was built in record time, a huge number of roads to the South of town where demolished. Maybe this is where the materials to build this road bridge came from! I don't want to stand in the way of progress, but I feel sorry for the poor folk left without roads outside their homes.

If this event wasn't traumatic enough for the fellows of Porto, now, to top it off, Porto has flooded! (According to osmarender)

I wonder if UN troops will be borough in to help with the flood, and help stabilise the area.

Yesterday I did my first editing within OSM. Just some not very productive editing of some of the footpath and POIs in Kanzlerfeld. Just to try out Potlatch and JOSM. Today in the morning I saw that it worked and my editing can be seen in the Osmarender Layer of the map. The editing will probably take some more time to appear on the Mapnik layer.
I had a nice email conversation with Fröstel who helped me quite a bit to learn about editing within OSM.

The OSM wiki seems to indicate that no one has yet come up with a good scheme for adding stop signs to OSM. There is an existing highway=stop tag that can be applied to nodes, but it provides no way to specify which ways connected to that node actually have a stop sign.

So, I suggested a new mechanism for tagging stop signs using relations that should be flexible enough to handle any kind of situation involving stop signs that I've been able to think of. I have submitted a formal proposal yet, but I did add a description to the highway=stop discussion page.

In the meantime, I tried out the new scheme by tagging all the stop signs on my bike route to work along S 7th St., N 7th St. and N. 4th St. near downtown San Jose.

This route doesn't have anything too exotic, but it does have a few things beyond the garden variety four way stop.

This tagging scheme does generate a *lot* of relations, and road with a lot of stop signs will have a lot of relations following this tagging scheme.

If anyone is curious to see what I did, you can examine the map area indicated in this diary entry.

I've been tidying up the uk rail network today, and I must say it's looking better for it. I've fixed incorrectly tagged lines all over the place, with just a few left I need to query - railway=incline being one.

I've rendered a very big map of it, which made finding the stations not attached to railway lines easier and the train geeks then saw it and pointed out "shouldn't there be a line/station there" so I added in a couple of openstreetbugs.

There's a discussion on a new tagging schema for rail which I like the look of. It should end up less messy than the current situation, from what I can tell. See osm.wiki/Talk:Key:railway#New_tagging_schema...

If anybody wants a copy of my uk rail map, pm me - at 4Mb it's rather too large to just host publicly at the moment.

Added a few POIs and street stubs from a short walk through Northampton at the weekend.

I still haven't done much mapping outside of yahoo covered areas. It's difficult. Much more guesswork involved. I guess uploading tracks and comparing with other user's tracks is much more important.

...and what's the tag for a bingo hall?
