I've been wondering... How would one proceed to set up a private, offline form of OSM that they could use for private/fantasy/micromapping? I know quite a few people in the Conworld community might be interested in doing so, but there is little to no documentations about the set up, and that which exists is virtually impenetrable for the neophyte.

Today is my first login (i started today with "OSM") !
Let's see what i can do for "OSM".
I'll try to scan my near area and put it online.
At the moment i think it's a bit complicated to navigate
through the "OSM"-website. Maybe it's my fault but it's
verry complicated.
That's it - My first day.

The Norwegian-Finnish border was surveyed in 2000, and all documentation was collected on a CD-ROM. I have just sent an e-mail to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and asked for a copy of this CD.
If I get one, it should be a lot easier than the Excel list of Pulkovo 1932 coordinates of the Russian border, which I am still struggling to correctly decode.
Copy of the e-mail below:
More or less every single road in the northern archipelago of Gothenburg is now mapped. This includes Rörö, Hyppeln, Källö-Knippla, Björkö, Öckerö, Hälsö, Grötö, Hönö and Fotö.

Interesting.
Hi,
Was mache ich da verkehrt? (JOSM Build 1081)
I've known about some missing streets near me for a while, and only just had the chance to drive down them with a GPS. When I went to go over the trace I found that I'd been beaten. The only thing I got to do was "upgrade" the source tags to be "survey".
Added a few updates to my home town, including marking a few schools and one of the major landmarks, the Astor Column
Today, for the first time, I noticed there is an actual creek in the Silver Creek area. It is completely missing from the map, but its location is obvious from the riparian zone surrounding it, so I have started to map it out.
During a short trip to Toscana, I mapped the streets of Bagno Vignoni - a small and beautiful village with thermal springs.
On the first two week-ends of November I went 3 times to Rübenach with my bike to track the streets of Rübenach which were at that time, besides the major roads, completely missing in OSM.
Apparently the first priority for a new OSMer in Boston is sorting out the one way streets in the neighborhood. The MassGIS import helpfully tagged oneway streets with a FIXME unreview tag to indicate that it is half chance right, so delete those tags as I check them.
The majority of NoName items from MassGIS load are Service or access:private. A few are extensions, turns, or u-turns of named ways.
I have started tracing the Fairmont commuter rail line, bridges and one station so far.
South Bay Shopping center has expanded since MassGIS data and Yahoo aerial imagery. Adding the new exit precisely may wait until I upgrade to a USB/SD capable GPS.
I just noticed that a huge section of NCN national route 75 has disappeared. There's a note on the OpenStreetMap data (added by user Mappo?) that says "closed due to reopening of railway line. Due to be replaced with new route by 2010". I guess it has something to do with this Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link, which I've never heard of before. I'm not quite sure exactly why Edinburgh needs a fourth rail link to Glasgow (that takes 24 minutes longer than the existing 50 minute train) but it brings up an interesting question - given that every cycle map apart from OpenStreetMap will show NCN75 as being complete, people looking here will automatically assume that OSM is incomplete... maybe some alternative rendering for closed routes would be appropriate.
I went to visit my parents for a bit (actually, the specific timing was dictated by a dentist appointment) over the weekend. Weather was a bit cold, wet and windy but was tolerable for walking around outside with a big coat on.
I managed to map some more residential streets around Prestbury, which is the location of this diary entry. My mapping here is a bit sparse, I was walking with my parents who are "mapping muggles" and don't really understand why I'd want to walk up and down pointless side streets. Prestbury was always bigger than I perceived it due to the housing estates around Noverton Road which I hardly ever went into. It's now even bigger due to new development...
I discovered we'd driven down an unmapped road on our way back to Cambridge. Unfortunately the path of the road that I'd GPSed (my trace looked pretty sane and smooth) conflicts with the North part of Copt Elm Road here:
osm.org/?lat=51.88982&lon=-2.04615&zoom=16&layers=0B00FTF
I suspect the existing data is not entirely correct since my GPS trace overlapped the roadways given in unlikely ways. I'm not able to correct it as I can't go back to check the junction layout. If nobody does it in the meantime I expect I'll take a crack at it when I go home for Christmas.
Back in Cambridge, we got mildly lost and came to an entrance to an allotment. I was then able to find the site on the Yahoo imagery for Cambridge and trace roughly round it, which should appear here:
osm.org/?lat=52.23021&lon=0.11531&zoom=17&layers=0B00FTF
another empty space filled in, hurrah!
