My last post generated a good response from OSMers explaining why they got involved with mapping and joined in the OSM project. Thanks again to all those who responded.
I have decided to post some more questions along a similar line of enquiry, and am inviting anyone to respond and share their thoughts:
1) Do you view user-generated mapping, and taking part in OSM, as a hobby or a lifestyle choice?
2)Why do people attend Mapping parties?
If you would like to share your opinions with me and contribute to my study of the OSM community please either post a comment here, e-mail me via the site or at caroline.hangartner@student.manchester.ac.uk
Any response is appreciated and I will acknowledge all people who contribute in my dissertation, unless you specifically wish not to be acknowledged; please let me know if this is the case. I will not attribute names/ usernames to specific comments or quotes used within the body of my dissertation without first seeking your permission (most probably via e-mail).

Anybody tried to compile a list of what Mapnik and Osmarender do render and how differently they do it?
One annoying difference that springs to mind is that Mapnik cannot render icons for amenities that are building/areas, but in Osmarender, the dot necessary for the Mapnik render causes a second icon to pop-up (I tend to delete the dot, assuming that Mapnik is supposed to eventually display it, and it's ultimately redundant either way). Another thing is that amenity=hospital on an area display the area, but no icon in Mapnik (which, AFAICT, does not display icons for most areas period), but nothing in Osmarender (which bring the point of whether to apply the name on area, building, or node for hospital...). Also, Osmarender displays name for hospitals, but not Mapnik etc. See the coordinate for an example.
Hi,
Doing some more mapping of Tofino,BC
Does anyone know how to tag the description of a point... say amenity=bikeshop
and then name=Buds Bikes
how to tag what gets put in the description box?
I'd like to have the Company Address, and phone number in there, putting as much text as allowed.
Hopefully this is an easy one.
:)
Sam
P.S. is there a list somewhere which shows all the tags which represent all the default icons on the Garmin Legend CX?

I was looking over the map features wiki page.
It might be a good idea if many others also review what it says and make sure that it's uptodate, as now the more mapping conventions, and things that can be rendered.. are now rendered.
Cheers
I just spent a while cleaning up the mess of "dead" (some were actually approved!) proposals on the wiki. I was surprised at just how many of them there were (also nuked a number of empty proposals never actually filled in). Maybe I'll go in and suggest a water_splash feature for wading pools and similar water games I mentioned in an earlier diary.
Now I'm going to go double check some bus stop locations and start considering the best way to map bus stops to route.

Did a nice walk around the Organ Pipes National Park, just north of Melbourne. The tessellated pavement is definitely worth seeing. A very unusual rock-formation which one can scamper over.
Anyway now it's added to the map, plus a fair bit of jacksons creek traced from the yahoo imagery.
added some industrial / commercial areas near Philippsburg / Huttenheim and mapped the Village of Rheinsheim almost completely - some POIs are still missing.
Looking at the Osmarender map of Tübingen I found some errors rendering the Neckarinsel. I lowered the river Neckar and the island one more layer, so that the paths and other stuff on the island will not be overpainted by the island itself.
