Many users seem to misunderstand the tag cycleway=lane. Obviously, this tag should also be used for cycleways which are built aside a road.

I took part in the annual Duo Normand cycle race on 24th September in Marigny, Normandy. Turns out most of the route wasn't on the map.....so I took my GPS with me and it's now added (although still awaiting rendering as I write this). Actually the GPS was my only means of knowing the altitude and hence gauging how far up each of the hills I was, so it was a useful piece of equipment during the race as well. I've also added a route relation to mark the course.

And yes, a finer examination of the GPS trace would reveal that I didn't do it in a particularly fast time!

Hallo zusammen,

am 11. Oktober veranstalten wir den 1. Magdeburger Open-Source-Tag (http://www.open-source-tag.de).

As I wrote a few days ago, the Eastern Island coastline is not rendering right, the same problem with part of the New Jersey Coast line was solved during last night render. I don't know why but Cayman Island is also having the same issue.

It would be really nice if one of the more skilled editors can take a look at it. Thanks in advance.

Not having ready access to a GPS device, my method of mapping footpaths and bridleways is fairly traditional. I get out my Ordnance Survey 50k map and go and walk the paths. When I get home, I trace the route that I walked on to the aerial photograph. I have a good memory for landmarks, and I take photographs where I am likely to get confused.

On further reflection, this may lead to some interesting license issues.

Let's say for instance that you are following a footpath and reach a small copse of trees. On one side there is a farmer's track but the OS map shows that your footpath goes around the other side. It is quite likely that this is steganography, an intentional error that the OS has included in their map to catch out people who copy it. However, generations of ramblers before me have reached the copse, consulted their map and followed it religiously. As such, there is a well-trampled path around the awkward side of the copse. In the absence of signposts, how does one know which is the correct route?

This problem is much more common than you may suspect. On one walk alone I came to a copse exactly as described above, and a little further on there was another farmer's track that skirted a field while the OS map told me that the right of way lay straight across the middle. Whether this was true or not, generations of ramblers with the same OS map had taken it to be so and there was a trampled path running parallel to a perfectly good farm track 20 yards away.

We OSMers all try and avoid license issues by getting the information for ourselves, but if we get lost where do we go for confirmation? If you ask the council, chances are they'll pull out an OS map to check. What do we do?

Just got the news today from an OSM mapper that Metro Manila
Philippines is now in Google Mapmaker
See this:

I have to admit that it is impressive in many parts (but not as
detailed as where I am currently mapping). However, we all know it
ain't free as in freedom.

So again here's my OSM love campaign. Calling all OSMer! Please join
us in an online mapping party for Metro Manila Philippines. A couple
of minutes (or hours or days) of your time editing using the Yahoo!
imagery is most welcome.

Using yahoo imagery, we want to complete a "first pass" edit to many
areas in the metropolis (yahoo imagery in Metro Manila is pretty much
dated by our guesstimate: 5 years old, but still very much useful).

Before editing please consider the following:
1. choose an area where there is virtually no edits (this way we don't
mess-up other contributions);
2. we have "mostly" completed major routes (motorway/truks/primary)
so the remaining tags would be mostly residential areas;
3. add the tag highway=road.

Also have a look at the
osm.wiki/index.php/Yahoo!_Aerial_Imagery#Problems_with_tracing_Yahoo
for tips.

I have been up in Cumbria for a few days recently, and have added a few hiking paths, minor roads, and a lot of footpath/bridleway/track/road stubs which I hope will encourage further mapping. It looks like a lot of streams and roads could perhaps be added from NPE in this area, so I'll have a go at that soon.

Since my last post, I added city and town boundaries in the Metro Manila area, which will possibly profit OSM users in the Metro Manila area and possibly tourists and visitors. Also, I fixed nodes and waypoints and added new ones (an example of this is the Silver City Automall and the "nearby streets" [south of Eagle Drive]). I got the info for the boundaries from personal knowledge, previous travels to some of the areas, and Yahoo! imagery helped me a lot to accomplish it. I didn't use maps under copyright and I wrote down notes where the borders are.

Also, I decided to concentrate my mapping energies in the Metro Manila area just to help improve its coverage. San Pablo City, on the other hand, will have to be contented with the current coverage until I get a good GPS device. Still, I hope that many Filipinos will discover OpenStreetMap and use it freely, since it doesn't have that much copyright restrictions that other physical and interactive maps have (at least most of them).

If I made certain problems here, send me a message (but not through the comments section). I'd like to participate in a mapping party in the Mega Manila area, if not my own hometown.

Have had my GPS for over a year now and have been regularly contributing to http://www.malsingmaps.com.

I've now decided to contribute all my tracks to OSM as well, and have just started by digitizing the area where I live, which is currently all blank.

First I have to figure out how to layer flyovers properly. And still no clue about road directions ...
