wow, my first edits (from yesterday) have appeared on the mapnik tiles. I removed the decommissioned railway tracks of the Penn Central Railroad in east Urbana, and corrected the length of an alley segment in my neighbourhood (that part of the alley just isn't there, there are fences and back yards, why did it make it into the thiger data anyways).
On a different note, I wonder if there actually is vandalism on OSM, and how tiny but wrong map edits get detected.

Hi,

I mapped a part of Weilbach today. Streets are mostly present but no names yet. Added a few amenities and cycleways also. I wrote my first two PERL scripts to evaluate OSM files. Quite nice. I am trying to get an access to the SVN currently. Then i will try to produce a more sophisticated script and publish. I plan to program some quality check/assurance. But right now it's only a draft...

Cheers

Having driven most of the country now, I find fuel stations are a major consideration - due to being infrequent... Many added.

I've outlined a lot of Gaborone, and done a little detail round the block we're visiting.

A number of extant roads are tagged "interestingly" eg dirt tracks as secondary. If I've tagged it above unclassified it's a proper road!

Well I decided it was high time I started making some actual contributions, notwithstanding the lack of a GPS unit or usable aerial imagery for my area. So I started tracing over the old out-of-copyright map using Potlatch, adding my street and the back streets around Derby that I know.

I noticed the overlay is somewhat misaligned when compared to the existing ways, so I expect that when I do get my Freerunner in the next few weeks and start adding some GPS traces I will have some editing to do to correct what I've entered so far. No matter, at least we officially exist on OSM now.

Having mentioned what I was doing to one person in the office, another colleague piped up that they were also a contributor. I suspect that if I asked around I'd find one or two more as well -- I've noticed GPS traces of the private on-site access roads here, so clearly someone is actively tracing and uploading.

A few communities along the Swedish west coast are nearing completion: Kullavik, Billdal, Hovås and Askim. Most of the street names are still missing, though. I am going to polish these areas a bit more and then continue going south from Kullavik towards Onsala.

Problem. You want to capture all those lovely high rise buildings in your city of your choice.

You know you need to take into account the parallax error (because the satellite photography is rarely straight down), but you can only see the roof of the building, not its position on the ground. What to do?

Well it may be obvious to some but I only worked it out today. Trace the top of the building anyway, and at the end just use Potlatch to slide the shape into place on the ground.

So much easier than estimating the offset in your head and kinda drawing with a tilt!
