Think OpenStreetMap is a great initiative that will definately enrich the internet big time. Of course we all have a long way to go before it can fully compete with commercial maps. But hey, wikipedia outpaced Brittanica in the end ;-)

I will start editing here and there but am still sorting out how to add GPS navigation points...

*sigh* I just did ~24km of cycling with a couple of mishaps. Firstly I did the first half with the GPX log turned off, then, due to having loaded routable maps last night, the second half was set to lock on road.

Well, just another excuse to go for a ride tomorrow ay?

In case you haven't seen them yet the mapsource installers for various routable Garmin maps are here: http://emexes.powweb.com/osm/download.html

Here's a funny story.

Some chaps came over to our London office from the Czech republic, and after I'd spent the day giving them a training course, they asked me some questions about how to get to Big Ben and Tower Bridge etc. Naturally I pulled up an online map on the projector screen, and naturally it was openstreetmap.org . Openstreetmap has been better than google maps in central London for a long time now. They were impressed by the detail. Even their hotel showed up on the map, so they started asking me questions about it.

Part of me was thinking "No. please don't get me started. I'm supposed to be enthusiastic about our company products, not OSM!" So I casually described the project, and tempered their enthusiasm (and mine) by pointing out that London is an extreme case. The coverage isn't that detailed everywhere. For example let's take a look at the city where they are from: Olomouc ...oh wow ...OK

Maybe OSM coverage really is expanding at an increasing rate.

some streest and tracks in Olsberg, Wulmeringhausen, Sauerland, Germany.

Looks like the Yahoo-Map is not correct in that area? GPS-data and yahoo are shifted by on a ne-sw-axis to each other by several kilometers...

Gaborone, Botswana - a capital city with 2 roads - until this week :]
I'm not going to get it all done, but it's a decent start - just batting about the place shopping & having tea seems to be getting a fair crack at it. The residential roads are not like home; it's all numbered blocks with guards on gates so I can only do one block, but the connecting roads are fair game - -have decided to mark them at the residential level as the inner zones are very small, but I wonder if named unclassified is nearer correct?

... I realized, was uploading to much GPS traces... My crontab was set to "*/30 * * * *" (i.e. every 30 minutes), so I decided to change the interval to two hours: "* /2 * * *" I'm sorry! :-/ It was before my first coffee. So now, it's disabled, I'll re-enable it when my queue is empty.

Another strange issue which ran my way is that Tiles@Home complained about the RAM on one of my machines (detailed outpup below). Well, 4 GB should be enough on a machine wich is nearly idle and just uses 20 MB of its swap area. My BSD box just has 2 GB, t@h never said a word about it. Strange strange. I believe, it has something to do witch my freshly installed NIS, indeed I forgot to change some permissions in the t@h working directory.
Now as promised the detailed log:
