Good morning!

Today I finished mapping Wiesbaden Medenbach. I also added a few tracks around Hofheim/Taunus. Then I stumbled upon a map feature: man_made=surveillance. Very interesting. Unfortunately only a few cameras are mapped. I encourage everyone to map surveillance cameras so we know how fast their number is rising! I also added an icon for the cameras to my render rules.

Cheers

I moved back to Newcastle from Lismore yesterday and have already been out mapping!

I did a few new tracks in the Glenrock State Recreation Area and confirmed/corrected a few others. Bellbird Bridge geocache was found on the way too :).

Anyway, by now many of the changes should be uploaded from JOSM.

I've done some learning about multipolygon relations as there are some private property sections in the park. Hopefully they work...*crosses fingers*.

The area is getting quite complex with the large number of walking and cycling trails cris-crossing. Quite often 2 trails run so close together that GPS errors can cause the GPX tracks to overlap.

Anyway, I'd like to eventually have a high accuracy and high detail map of the park which can be printed and handed out or left in geocaches in order to increase the popularity of OSM.

It seems Saturday's "403 Forbidden" was a server problem. Let's hope it's back up today. Yesterday I went to Witham (in Essex, pronounced 'wit-um', not 'with-ham' like the town in Lincolnshire) to meet friends for lunch. I wasn't driving so took the opportunity to grab a track there. And then got soaked on the way from the car park to the restaurant! Today I'm going to track my way to and from the Park and Ride at Sandon - this is on the map, but the way I go in the morning (back roads through Little Baddow and down Colam Lane) is not, nor is my return journey through Danbury!

Hello everybody, especially in Austria / Tyrol!

I would like to start a Mapping Project in Innsbruck.
A mappingparty in the second half of September 2008 would be great. Anybody interested?

Hallo allerseits, speziell in Tirol!

Kind regards - Liebe Gruesse

Second trip to Huntingdon on Friday. The area each side of the northern ring road is industrial estates, some of which had already been done in outline, but to which I was able to add a lot of detail. Then across the railway and we enter shoppers paradise: a massive Tesco, a couple of other retail estates with all the usual shops, and a leisure park which could have been anywhere - an almost identical combination of cinema, gym and fast good outlets as in Cambridge around a massive car park. Then into a housing maze, apparently called Oxmoor, the kind of estates where there is an almost independent footway network linking it all up with car access along scrappy roads to the rear - indeed there is a rather good green swathe running down the middle with a very decent cycleway which looks like it leads all the way into Huntingdon town centre, though not joined up on this occasion. Around Coneygear Road (what a peculiar name), the footway network is elevated and crosses all the suburban residential streets on bridges. Then into the thin in-fill wedge between the eastern ring road and the parallel Sapley Road, which is a much wealthier area of gabled new homes defined by the developers notion of "kerb appeal".

Hallo,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry refers, essentially, to measuring stuff using photographs. It's been used in traditional surveying for years (here's a paper from 1925-1926 on the subject http://www.iop.org/EJ/abstract/1475-4878/27/2/301). There seems to be a fair bit of commercial photogrammetry software out there. The main open source software I found was Ossim (pronounced Awesome!) (http://www.ossim.org) and it does seem to be designed with surveying in mind although I'm not quite clear what its capabilities are.

I've recently noted that there's a proposed building attribute (osm.wiki/index.php/Building_attributes) for height (amongst other interesting things). Measuring a building's height isn't easy to do accurately with a GPS (firstly because elevations don't seem to be very accurate on a basic GPS and secondly because you can't always get onto the roof!). Most of use don't carry a theodolite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodolite) to measure this sort of thing - even if we did, they're a bit unwieldy to tote around on a bike!

I've been pondering how feasible it might be to estimate approximate building heights using geotagged photographs and a much simpler piece of software. You would need (for a simple setup):
1) a reasonably level surface, lets assume you can be roughly at the building's ground level
2) photographs from a couple of different distances - at known positions, provided by the GPS
3) the position of the building, either by walking up to the building with your GPS or by looking it up on a satellite map (or OSM itself!)

Did a purposeful drive around the village the other night, and now keep GPS tracking on wherever I drive :)

Switched to JOSM, because GPS server down, and added MUCH to Holmer Green Village.

Need to go back round with camera to get road names etc., but coming along nicely if I do say so myself :-)
