Community and Foundation Track - SOTM 2020

Summary This series of SOTM workshops will help us plan and coordinate in person followed by online sessions. These sessions work as a companion to each other building on the who, why and how methods of community building. We aim to be as inclusive as possible across OSM - developers, mappers, technologists, community organizers and more. We want to collaborate with the community to formulate documentation and measurable indicators out of these concurrent workshops.

Session 1 - Collaborating across Contributors 1 hour

In this 1 hour session, we will discuss and map out the types of contributors to OSM. We will talk about values and spaces to support all the types of contributions to the OSM project.

This interactive session will involve 3 parts and small group work: Small groups - we will learn about “why we contribute to OSM” - 10 minutes User journeys - we will divide into 3 - 4 groups to document the user journeys of the various types of contributions. - 30 minutes Discussing ways to document and make suggestions for improvements 20 minutes Report back and next steps.

Since I have joined OSM I used to attend different summits and conference but the state of the map Africa 2019 was my first state of the map Africa that I attended, it was amazing for me because I got the opportunity present and share my experience on the use of OSM in Rwanda and the experience of OSM Rwanda in general, during this conference I had a talk where I presented the use of OSM in Urban Planning, this was in the part of understanding the risks talks. My presentation has surprised me due to the huge attendance I received which showed me that, people need OSM technology in their daily life, I was very happy as many people were interested and asking questions and due to limited time all the questions were not responded directly but the discussions and my explanations continued on my social media and emails as their requested to keep explaining after the session and the conference, I am happy that all the emails received on that presentation have replied and people understood the technology. I got the opportunity to attend different presentation where I learned additional skills in the mapping sector and OSM in general where I learned more on mapillary and the use of drones in Mapping I was lucky to meet for the first time the founder of OpenStreetMap Steve Coast. it was my dream that came true as I have been wishing to meet him and ask him a couple of questions that I needed. I had the opportunity to give him an exclusive interview that I shared on my YouTube channel (Erneste Ntakobangize) it is the nice conversation that can help young people like the inspiration of doing perfect things considering future generations. As a conclusion I thank the osm for supporting me in attending and participating in this conference, it helped me to learn and the experience gained is helping other new mappers in Rwanda and OSM Rwanda in general

yesterday was training on citizen science ,i was among the panelist so i made a presentation on a program called GLOBE AT NIGHT it deals with light pollution and the impact it has on us. its done by taking observations of the sky particularly in the evening periods, i also learnt about STALL CATCHERS and Fold IT. they are all games so take part in them all. fold it presentation was done by our National coordinator Sunday victor.

on 6th April( yesterday)I was trained on how to map with hot task manage, how to see the task that are available and the way to attend to it.A practical was done to show us how its been done

On 3rd April 2020 i was trained how to map a building using ID EDITOR. I was able to map a building , i found it exciting..

On march 29th 2020,i had orientation/unique mapper focus, the training was done using zoom app because of the on going covid19 going on we cant met in person so it has to be done that way,we had a run down on openstreetmap and the the tools are on OSM ,so that every body can be carried along…. Dr diary i forgot to say i was elected the the team leader of lion mappers Nsukka, am excited and i hope i would be able put in all my best, guess this is really exciting. so far i have been doing all my best and putting in all my efforts

I was so surprise at first to hear about the INTERNATIONAL WOMEN DAY 2020 and the term EACH FOR EQUAL, I asked my self if it could be possible at all to have such a program, the day came and i had to attend, i register students that attended and i also join the panel to discuss on each for equal,at the end of the day i received training from the national coordinator him self( Sunday victor) on how to sign in to openstreetmap, he discussed the icons that were there and the uses of the icons.i also learnt about MAP.ME,and we test run the ZOOM APP and how we would use the ZOOM APP.

Hello everyone I’m starting a OSM themed podcast called Nodes and Ways. I’ve got episode one out and episodes 2 and 3 are in the works now. It’s on YouTube and LBRY and you can get the RSS feed at nodesandways.com . It will be in more podcasty places like Apple podcast and Spotify in the future.

today i have spent one hour learning all the different tools and basic shortcuts. I have watched a few tutorials on how to add buildings and how to select different area types.After i add a building i need to select what type of building it is but if i don’t know what type it is then i just select building. i started mapping some building for the task #8247 to help fund people who cant work due to covid-19.

Mapatón COVID-19 Medellín aims to prepare information through open maps that allow us to adopt measures in cases of virus spread in the city of Medellín. Aiming to reduce vulnerability, making its structures visible and ensuring that the map is accurate; and to help better understand their degree of exposure and the determinants of vulnerability to environmental hazards.

Spent 1 hour mapping buildings.

So a few months ago I created an interactive site for public transports around Paris (here; also check my last post, in french) with a custom map made on Mapbox, and using Navitia’s API for itineraries, next departures, etc. But I thought this map design could be useful on its own, so I changed it so that you can download the data of any city you want very easily and it will be displayed on the map. I guess it can be useful because I don’t see a lot of OSM-based transport maps dealing with coloured bus & train lines. The site for this map is here (without itineraries because they are limited to a few places, but you can click on the data on the map and see the tags of the objects). It uses the Overpass API as well as osmtogeojson.

I also put the files on GitHub. (note : it’s the first time I use it, so I may have made mistakes idk).

In just over two months, I have finished my edits in North Arlington now, with every building mapped! This one was way quicker than the last OSM project I gave myself, Teaneck.

North Arlington is relatively small, which is partly why it didn’t take so long to map. It’s the southernmost location in Bergen County, and borders two other New Jersey counties: Essex and Hudson.

Next is Fort Lee. It has roughly the same land area as North Arlington (just 0.02 square miles less), but unlike North Arlington, it doesn’t have a large cemetery, so it may take a bit longer to map Fort Lee.

Due to the corona virus pandemic the annual face-to-face meeting of the OSMF board of directors shifted to what we wryly termed a “screen-to-screen” meeting using the Zoom video conferencing account of our facilitator, Allen “Gunner” Gunn. To our collective surprise, the video conference went fairly well. It was not as good as meeting face to face, but was far better than audio only, and so much so that the board plans to experiment with shifting from using Mumble (audio only) for monthly board meetings to a video conferencing platform.

In keeping with the FOSS philosophy of OSMF, we will try BigBlueButton, an open-source videoconferencing platform. Thus, if OSMF members want to tune in to the next board meeting, watch for announcements that we will meet in a video conference. We will ask that non-members of the board keep their cameras and microphones off, and that only board members have their cameras and microphones on.

Minutes of the “screen-to-screen” meeting remain in process. Bottom line up front: the board has taken on board much of the information in the SWOT analysis, last year’s survey, and the 40+ conference calls I have made to community members, local communities and chapters, and members of our advisory board. We accept all criticism that has come our way and are working on how to address the problems you have identified to us.

In March I flew to Riga for what will likely be the last in-person regional SOTM for a while due to the pandemic, State of the Map Baltics (many thanks and kudos to Rihards Olups for pulling it together and being my host in Riga). My presentation on “Winds of Change in OSM” was well received. I plan to deliver an updated version of that presentation during the virtual SOTM in July, so if you are interested in a synopsis of what I have been hearing from across the community, and my take on it all, be sure to tune in.

So we organized an online mapathon. I want to share what we planned, how it worked, our feedback, and my thoughts about how we should continue.

When I say we I mean core team. By definition, the core team are people who go to a pub after a mapathon. Maybe, it would be better to say that: The Missing Maps is mainly about mapping. However, somebody has to take care of the mappers…. And that’s we, the core team.

In Prague, there are Missing Maps mapathons every last Tuesday of a month (we have an exception in December), and we were not willing to give up on March’s one.

What we planned

We found that we had about 30 registered participants. We do the introduction to mapping in iD editor, we teach the JOSM basics, and we explain how to validate to advanced mappers.

The plan was to have one global chat, video stream for introduction talk, video chat for mapping groups, and video stream again for final talk(s). All of the communication channels must be accessible without registration for participants. Moreover, video chat for mapping groups should be instantly creatable to maximize flexibility.

We needed leaders of mapping groups. Fortunately, there are plenty of capable mappers in the core team. The idea was to limit the capacity of a mapping group (to about 6 - 7 people) to achieve comfort communication.

We got prepared with Introduction to Tasking Manager and iD editor video (in Czech) and written down mapping process (in Czech, too). The video length is limited to 5 minutes. I think it increases the probability that the participants would watch it.

Now about technologies. We used the Freenode IRC channel as the global chat. Participants can connect easily over Kiwi IRC client, just specifying their names. (You can add server and channel after /next/ in the link.) We used Zoom for the introduction and final talks. And we used Jitsi for video chat of mapping groups.

March 24: School Work starts

As best as I can tell I’ve only worked my way through 69 schools. It seems far more. There are more than 223 changesets made by myself under this banner, and I was trying to do one changeset for each school or set-of-schools in the same immediate area. I think that what has happened is that the number of schools listed on the section of the page that I’ve worked on have shrunk as I have mapped them.

I began using https://osm.mathmos.net/schools/progress/NG to update all school info within OSM in the NG (Nottinghamshire) postcode on March 24. You can see all postcode links at https://osm.mathmos.net/schools/progress/.

The osm.mathmos.net site was promoted by a diary post by CjMalone. It gathers info from the get-information-schools.service.gov.uk site on current schools and cross-references those against UK schools mapped within OSM. Each top-level postcode gets it’s own page, and within that page the site lists (in order):-

1. Schools apparently not mapped in OSM
2. Schools in OSM not matched against the official list
3. Schools matched in OSM by location but not edubase ID
4. Schools matched in OSM by edubase ID

School Cadastre

In the last 9 days I’ve worked my way through all the first 3 sets of schools in the lists above. I’ve entered missing Cadastre (the perimeter of the school land parcel), and fixed them where they were wrong.

I also tried but failed to find the govt opensource download for those cadastre. Finally, Christian Ledermann mailed me with the link to his github for his App that contains those Cadastre. Unfortunately his site is broken (logging into OSM gives a Status 500 error back from his site), but it originally did work and put all necessary info on the OSM way. Bugger! Just when I needed it, it is not working.

Top ten fifteen mappers in my country are not even locals. There’s a need to form a new rebel alliance! We shall rise, silently and slowly. Currently, we are just tired.

Right now, I suspect that Tesla gets its speed limit data from OSM, but I can’t prove this.
