I notice that Canada Post and the province now use abbreviated street names. What I mean by that is, for example, “Grafton ST” is used, not “Grafton Street”. The last part is abbreviated (and capitalized):

• ST - street
• DR - drive
• LN - lane
• CRT - court
• AV - avenue
• … and so on …

It seems like the data in OSM for Charlottetown is manually entered, and not uploaded en masse using data from the province.

My feeling is that I would like to change the street names to match EXACTLY what’s defined by the Province. Reasons for doing so:

• it’s always shorter text! This helps in rendering maps, since space is at such a premium on a map.
• it matches exactly the official source. This would make it possible (in principle) to write queries once a year, to see if there’s any mismatch at all between the Province and OSM. Thus the two could be kept in fairly close sync.
• street names are probably the single most important items on a typical map. To be able to verify that they match the Province’s official list would be a boon.

I get it, some corporates want(ed) gaps in the map to be populated as rapidly as possible to be exploited in the near future (well, what else?).

I’ve lost track whether field data, collected on the ground (source=survey), as my hobby, simply for fun (when I began mapping back in 2013) is completely overwritten by paid contractors from thousands of miles away.

Five years time, through the Black Mirror might translate into the measure of an eon. Back then, high resolution imagery were only available for select places. So GPS tracks made mapping possible. Fast forward in time, we get additional imagery layers to make mapping easier - with an invisible warning sign that imageries may not really tell what’s what with respect to the reality.

Now as this particular hobby has got its way shoved by other important life priorities, sometimes finding the right time to map is a challenge - but I may have not given up to volunteer uploading geodata into OpenStreetMap - right from where I traverse with my humble mode of transportation.

I’m not totally frustrated with all these remote mappers. Some areas may have been mapped gorgeously e.g. unmapped highways in housing estates with regular patterns were mapped by these team - I really disliked mapping these, though.

Some may have access to better data e.g. derived GPS tracks from trips made by car-share rides, or possible unmapped highways outputs from a machine vision with the assistance of imagery with better clarity.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone including me, made mistakes (e.g. not responding to feedbacks and so on).

But sometimes, things get too much - I may need to take a break. So, there goes my diary entry: I just wanted to vent out things. Happy mapping, everyone!

I’ve seen others use the diary feature to good effect, so I thought I’d join in. I actually have a lot of work backlogged from when I was in Iowa in December of 2019, to the train trip to and from the Washington, D.C. area in Dec 2019/Jan 2020 for MAGFest, as well as some work in the Champaign/Urbana area, where I’m local now.

Things on my to-do list:

Iowa/Illinois (outside of Champaign/Urbana):

• Replace the intersections at the IA 58/Main St interchange in Cedar Falls, Iowa with a dogbone interchange also known as a “raindrop roundabout”

Prince George County, Maryland:

• Add stops to the NH1 and NH2 bus routes. I have GPS waypoints for these

Champaign/Urbana area:

• Extend bike lane on County Fair Drive to Prospect Avenue
• Fix Greenbelt Bikeway near Heritage Park, which right now portrays an unbroken route and paved path in an area that has neither

Completed:

Iowa/Illinois:

• Added maxspeed and maxspeed:source tags to IL 5/John Deere Road in Rock Island and Moline
• Added expressway=yes tag to U.S. 63 between Waterloo and the New Hampton freeway bypass

Now that I know about the expressway and motorroad tags I’m going to be tagging roads with them. I’ll only do this for roads I’ve actually surveyed, however, and I’ll upload my GPS traces when I do as evidence I’ve actually been there. That’s a policy of mine in general, especially when editing OSM for areas outside of my local area, but as I’ve encountered edit wars on these things in the past this is an area where I like to have evidence to back up my edits should they get reversed.

I’am a student from Polytechnic University of the Philippines (San Juan) , under the coursed of BSED-English. As part of our CWTS activities, we need to attend the Mapa Time Session that really helps us not just to tract some schools but to build a social interaction. After a long hour of sitting in the classroom, finally we have a time to have fun while we are learning new things! Mapa time is indeed worth the effort! I’ve learned how to locate nor tract some school that are not able to see of some of us, and creating and labeling it as well. In attending those 5 sessions, I can say that my favorite part is locating the areas because this is the first time that Im doing this, I’am new to this and there is a high possibility that I will be one of the volunteer here.

Hi, I am a student of PUPSJ. Let’s talk about myself first, actually I love computers. I like sitting in front of computer screen and making myself busy. I am into typing than reading. I like computers but I am not good at it and that is so sad. So, let’s talk about my experience in MapaTime. My five sessions in #MapaTime are so fun. My time and effort are so worth it. It may be a short period of time but I learned a lot. What have I learned? I learned how to locate some areas. I also know how to straight the curved roads. I am not good at directions, seriously but this #MapaTime help me to improved it. I also learned how to fix roads, residential and all. My favourite activity here is adding school in the Philippines, it may seem so easy but it’s not. Honestly speaking, I want to volunteer in the near future, I want to teach other students how to use #MapaTime but I already know to myself that I will not going to succeed it, I am that shy.

Hi! I’m from Bachelor of Secondary education major in English. As we have started our sessions in #MapaTime it is quite fun but it actually hard because it’s really hard to locate some schools in some areas in different places, but it’s really enjoyable to locate those places and have some points. I learned here in Mapatime is that always take your time in doing something and definitely don’t rush in things.My favourite part in this session is the Openstreet map and the Maproulette. I’m really happy to help in this kind of field because I really learned alot from doing this. It’s good to suggest that we should do this from time to time to help more in our society and in some places.It’s such an honour to be part or to volunteer in the future.

Hi, I am a student in PUP san juan campus,there’s really nothing interesting about me but yes, I love watching movies, series and all. and I am interested in learning more about the computer and the inside of computer. that’s it. and let’s talk about what we have done… The 5 session here is not a waste of time and yes, it is good for my time and effort because I get to use my time by doing something that has sense and I have learned from it. I learned how to fix roads and all. I don’t know what to call this activity but Its my favorite, the activity is about making schools here in the Philippines. I have learned so much in the MapaTime program. I have really enjoyed it, and I think that even though it is a simple computer task, it has great benefits for our country. It feels good to be volunteering in locating possible evacuation centers in time of calamities. The instructor, as well as the student assistants were very helpful. I enjoyed MapaTime program much more than the CWTS activities during the 1st semester. The only problem that I had encountered was the slow internet connection, which caused me to slow down during the task. Other than that, everything is good. All in all, I hope that this program expands in many other schools in the Philippines. It is a really great cause.

 Good day! I am an English Major from PUP San Juan. And I would like to share my experience on Mapping schools as part of our CWTS course subject. Are you ready? Okay, here goes.
 I never understood how Mapping schools can be a method to volunteer to our community. But when it was explained to us, I had a clearer view of why it is necessary to do, adding the fact that it was just weeks after the Taal Volcano eruption occurred, it helped me see things from a deeper perspective; and that this is not a mere waste of time. Participating in this activity would not only help to locate areas during disasters but it will also help the government locate which areas are struck immensely by certain tragedies. It is a gratifying experience truly to help our community in our own little ways. I really enjoyed a lot. I encourage you to take time volunteering on this activity. Who knows, we might encounter each other. :)

I personally love extending a hand to others. Being an Education student, what I can do now is by doing simple things (since I cant afford yet helping financially) like this– Mapping. Especially I’m in the world of teaching and what we are mapping now is for school around the Philippines. This experience made me realised that there is always a way to help the community, by which not just us but the future generation will have the benefits. Also, this contributes additional knowledge for me in terms of technology. And this I would do and continuously doing in the future.

Good Afternoon, I am an education student in PUP San Juan Campus. My experienced in MAPA TIME is quiet challenging, at first I’m nervous to enter the computer lab, because I don’t have any idea, what is mapping all about. I learned in Mapa Time to map a street, to fixed an area, to map a building, but my favorite part is locating schools, I realized that there are many school schools in the Philippines. During our sessions, I wondered how other teachers sacrifice their time and effort just to teach children in rural areas. As a student, I am willing to volunteer in the future, because I want to help locate schools.

I would introduce myself by saying that i’m a english major student in pupsj. I liked this CWTS mapping subject, where i get to experience a new skill. I get excited everytime we have this mapping subject because i get thrilled, not because the room is airconditioned but i get thrilled with the points that i will earn every time i do a task, i was doing MapaTime even at home when i have free time just to earn more points and to rank a higher place. I got in the Top 10, where i’m very happy that i achieve things like this. I hope to have this oppurtunity to do this again, maybe in the summer. I learned that we have to be patient in using MapaTime, finding the right ones so we can help a lot of people especially in tough times, and its a big deal that i had this oppurtunity. All activities are my favorite for i earn points and get excited about it. Hello, I am a student from PUP SAN JUAN who was given an opportunity to experience the #MapaTime as our cwts. I love using technologies that’s why it is easy for me to cope up even though I was absent last 3rd meeting. This #MapaTime is one of the best ideas to help the community or even our country as a student. Locating schools, the roads, communities, establishments and other buildings are jobs done in this a field.This activity is worth of my time. Instead of using my gadgets, I open the site of openstreetmap and locate schools. I have learned that schools from province are bigger than what I studied. It was a great experience to see schools from provinces since I was not able to live in a province. Locating and editing schools are my favorite part. We are thankful to have an opportunity like this. If I would be given a chance to be part of it, I would volunteer in order to help younger generations. I would also like to thank our Professor and his students for guiding us and teaching us what we need to learn. THANK YOU! :)

I really have an interest at doing some kind of stuffs like this because i grew up with my little laptop and i have some experiences doing something on it. The session is really good use and helpful because it is entertaining and fun while you are helping others to identify schools just like what we made.But of course at first it may look so hard because you don’t have an idea doing it but after attending 5 sessions i can already consider it as an easy task. So i really do enjoy helping and doing this MapaTime. I have learned that mostly schools in rural areas are really hard to find and sometimes does not really identified as school because here mostly public schools are have some what similar by the colors or the structures of the schools but then in the remote areas that is not easy to go you cannot easily find schools with the help of this session we are now aware and most likely can help others to find those schools whenever they need it especially when there is a natural disasters and they need a shelter to evacuate. My favorite is when we are challenging each other by our points and how many schools we did. And i guess i would like to help and work as a volunteer when it is related to this.
