I entered the CWTS++ sessions with no idea in my head of what it was and basically what we are going to do. I was longing for a wonderful and surprising experience that the sessions might serve me. Yet indeed i was really surprised about the things that we were capable of doing with mapping. When everything was properly explained, it began to be so interesting and exciting that all of us can’t wait to go to the open street map to explore it on our own. I first started looking for my house, a friend’s house and even my classmate’s house. I couldn’t wait to create my first edit.

My first edit wasn’t actually included in the first task. hehe. I added the name of the building where i actually live in because there was no name on it. I used the iD Editor because at that time that was the editor that we have been introduced with. The following edits i made where a contribution of adding features such as buildings, streets, area and etc. on our country, the Philippines. And wow, we almost finished it in a matter of weeks. It was exciting adding helpful things on the map. I actually find mapping being so relaxing and it makes me more focused and i also feel fulfilled of the things that i have achieved in my mapping sessions.

Not be biased or so, i am quite disappointed about Google maps that they lack the services that openstreetmap offers. Google is the most used platforms in the internet yet openstreetmap is a hundred percent better at all costs. For example, I didn’t know where PUP San Juan was when i was enrolling. I know how to go there using our own family vehicle but i have no idea how to use public transportations for me to be able to go there. When i learned that openstreetmap provide the public transportation routes on their maps i was amazed and in awe realizing that this platform really does help people. Especially for people like me who aren’t really used to going out alone and isn’t really familiar with such places.

Mapping my neighborhood #pupsjcwts

Posted by tinatamads on 29 August 2018 in English.

When i mapped my neighborhood in Barangay Bagong Silang Mandaluyong CIty, i discovered that i really am a tourist in the place that i live in. I have stayed here for only two years now. I use to lived in another barangay in Mandaluyong City but due to educational situations i was forced to live in my fathers condo unit. I realized that i never really wandered the neighboring places within my home. I never really go outside because its exhausting and all the establishments i needed was already down stairs. I also believed that the neighborhood is unsafe since there was incident where a person was shot dead.

In exploring and mapping my neighborhood, i realized that i am surrounded by 3 barangay halls. First is the Barangay hall of Bagong silang, the second one is the Baranggay hall of Hagdan Bato and lastly the Barangay hall of Daang Bakal. I also noticed that there are lots of canteens behind our building. The street was filled with canteens that varies in low prices and as of what I’ve heard these canteens are budget friendly and quality wise specially to students. There are also mini stores that sells food, shakes, burgers and etc. There is also a mini market within those streets. I have also discovered a lot of shortcuts but it is only used with foot paths.

I am quite surprised by the places that i have discovered in my neighborhood. I wished i could’ve discovered it sooner since knowing these places could’ve been such a big help to save my expenses in food. Also knowing that there 3 barangay halls that surrounds me could’ve helped me more in my previous researches. I am now motivated to go outside, gain some weight and explore more of what my neighborhood can offer but i will also look out for my safety as always.

A day we all look forward where we will be able to learn how to help other people with small things such as mapping communities. Today in CWTS++ we learned that we have already made 12,000+ edits in mapping within our group! I was so happy to find out that all of our hard works and interest in mapping had a wonderful result. Also, Mr. Olario wanted us to know about the flooding that happened in India and that it needs to be mapped for the authorities to easily locate residential areas that are unknown to them. We were also taught how we can improve mapping and how we can map more accurately like editing mistakes such as the unaligned roads and houses that are mapped the wrong way and etc.

After that we discussed our homework which is the field papers by group. In the field papers we printed our neighborhoods and try to gather much information before the next meeting. Within my group I noticed that they were able to map missing roads, streets, they also named the streets and gathered the house numbers within their neighborhoods. I have also mapped the name of the stores that surrounds my neighborhood. Most of the stores were canteens since it is near a university.
