I wonder if it could it be aligned with early attempts to convert the historic Oneida Carry to a canal between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek at Rome, NY? From a Wikipedia entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_Creek - “In the 18th century, cargo and boats were portaged between the Mohawk and Wood Creek; the crossing was called the “Oneida Carry”. In 1797, the Rome Canal was completed and finally established an all-water route.” Could this ditch be the same as the Rome Canal and if so, may I add to your changeset?
