I'm trying to map out some of the Sustrans cycle routes around Edinburgh so that they appear on opencyclemap. In the last few weeks I've cycled ncn43 to Croy (which was already mapped), rcr73, and ncn76 as far as Dunbar. Next on my hitlist is ncn76 from Dunbar<->Berwick, the ncn1 from Berwick<->Seahouses, and the ncn1 north of Edinburgh up towards St Andrews.
My kit: Garmin Etrex yellow+bike mount, I use gpsbabel to get the tracks off the gps and into Linux, and josm to do the editing. I'm finding it hard to keep track of stuff on the bike without lots of stopping and starting - ideally there'd be some one-click bluetooth earpiece type voice annotation solution, but for the moment I'm experimenting with taking voice records and photos on a SE k750i phone, which at least records individual files with accurate timestamps.
The weather forecast was for rain but surprise, surprise: sunshine. So I went off to another sweep of Lugano. I would have mapped Parco Ciani as well, but the N800 announced "low battery" just as I was about to enter the park. Note to self: charge equipment before mapping.
The starbike's long-range sensor (Garmin eTrex Summit circa 2000) no longer appears to function properly. However, the nearest starbase (FortiusOne) was able to supply the starbike with a more current model of the same, which worked flawlessly. The bike's first set of data has been sent back to Starfleet and awaits in the queue. ;-)
This is my first time in OSM.
Firstly, I try to edit my living area.
Hi, I'm back after a while. Today I used my new HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) for tracing with OSMtracker and it worked fine, with it's own build in GPS radio. The tile loading works perfectly. I now see all the changes I made to the map, but I still don't get a trace from my walks.
Another thing you have to take into consideration, if you're planing on buying this device, is the poor performance of the display when the sun is out! The reflection of the hard glass-like display surface is huge! You constantly are looking at your own reflection; nice if you want to comb your hair, but terrible of you want do tracing, but the end results are satisfying I must say. It's nice to walk with such a relatively small device; especially if you come from a HP iPaq 4700 HX refridgerator.
I did Schaep en Burgh again and because now about 40% of the leaves have fallen down, I did get a much better trace, although not top nodge yet. I'd say I have a 60% accuracy now. I did get in some new paths though and could locate two bridges with enough credibility to their locations. In a couple of weeks I'm going in again.
I spent last w/e at the 2nd Manchester Mapping Party.
Today, I started by filling in a couple of roads close to home, and then drove over to one of the areas we'd started tidying up from the Yahoo stuff.
Since it was a nicer day than last weekend, and as I didn't have a partner with me to do the note taking while I drove, I parked up and walked around another section that has had some Yahoo tracings done.
I tidied that lot up with names and tweaking to the way, then added in a bunch more roads and some features.
There's a huge blank patch east of where I was working today that I know needs filling in...
Perhaps, next w/e. :-)
Das Ufer der Elbe bei Bleckede wurde nicht richtig gerendert - Teilweise waren im Uferverlauf drei Pfade übereinander mit unterschiedlicher Richtung.
- sollte jetzt richtig gerendert werden.
Today is November 1 (All Saints' Day) and, just like the millions of Catholic Filipinos all over the country, my family went to the cemetery to pay our respect to our dearly departed loved ones (and have a mini-family reunion while we're at it). In this case, it's my paternal grandfather at the Garden of Memories Memorial Park in Taguig City.
And just like any good OSMer, I noted down as many details as I can of the memorial park and the surrounding areas. After I got back home and opened up OSM, I noticed that somebody has outlined the basic shape of the memorial park based on the Yahoo! imagery. Of course, looking at the satellite imagery is just an aid and no substitute for real on-the-ground surveying, so I went ahead and corrected the landuse region to the best of my recollections and added the internal roads and as many of the footpaths as I can remember (and see from the Yahoo! imagery).
I also went ahead and mapped some of the surrounding areas, including the finished main road we took to get to the park (which was still unfinished in Yahoo!'s imagery).
I managed to pick up my running again - fixed some things in Westfalenpark, Rombergpark and an Allotment area without a name...
Today I spend some time waiting at a parking place near Witten Herbede and used the time to trace some pathes and, naturally, the parking aisels... ;-)
Last weekend I made one of my vavorite walks in the vineyards close to Wiesbaden. Start at the small road opposite of the Dahlienweg and take the first turn left, down the hill. Take the second track left, through the vine and follow this track till it joins another track, continue on this one an follow the slow climbing, long right curve. After a left curve, turn right and head for the forest, turn right and follow the forest border until You reach the end of a small road. This is the same one, on which You started.
So in Nanaimo, i started using the highway=pedestrian tag on areas where it is designated as pedestrian... no bikes, no rolerblades, to scateboards.
... I figure that its a good idea to draw in these, where you have a cement sidewalk.. and its obvious when looking at it in real life that its not for bicycles.
..
When the way is paved flat (with no cement cut blocks) then its not Assumed that its only for bikes or only for foot.
Usually when it is marked as a bicycle.. then it becomes a cycleway.. and pedestrians are asked to take the 'sidewalk'. ...
And so for dirt paths where it's not clear.. i like the new JOSM feature where you can indicate it as hiking .. and it shows different hiking levels.
So to me.... IMO... i will be using highway=pedestrian in 2 cases. 1 where i show a sidewalk next to the road (other roads which dont have anything, its assumed that there is no sidewalk. .. and where its a waterfront boardwalk where its obvious that its pedestrian only.
Hopefully im on the same line of thinking.
Thanks in Advance,
P.S. its not rendered yet, so you'll have to go into editing mode to see it.
I've been wondering why Google / Yahoo has never bothered building a proper map for Jakarta. Now I know why: the city is huge and unplanned, therefore it is not an easy city to map.
I've been wanting to do this a long time. And then yesterday I stumbled upon Openstreetmap inadvertently through Flickr. All along I thought the only way to do this is through Wikimapia!
I'm learning as I go along by working in neighborhoods I'm familiar with. I hope one day we have a Jakarta map that is as detailed as some of the beautiful German maps here.
Just spent a few lovely days in sunny Seville (whilst it snowed in London). Mapped as much as possible of the street names of the historic centre, most of which had been traced from Y! and were nonamers. Potlatch's new filter helps alot when editing this way (cheers RF), although I did find I didn't name some highway=pedestrian instances as my printed nonames output didn't show them as such. Also met up for a drink and chat with Pedro, who is mapping his city and showed me his cool Openmoko device.
Some problems mapping in this location: very poor GPStracks due to very narrow streets and tall buildings; very difficult to make judgements on highway types (what I thought were pedestrian streets often had scooters and even vans and cars coming at you); stiff neck from constantly looking skywards to collect road names high up sides of buildings; deciding whether to map names as displayed or to add Calle (went for former); hot work in the midday sun (cafe is good).
There is a free city bike service with many pickup/dropdown points. Would have used it more but time limit is 30mins and you can't immediately re-register for another bike (ie swop and continue). Urban mapping by Segway could be the way forward. Seem to be legal in most of Europe, except UK.
Strade forestali sull'altopiano del Pralongià e di collegamento a San Cassiano.
Valle del Longiarù.
I have spent the last two months biking around around Kongsberg and collecting GPS traces. Streets in the town center should be fairly complete. Most of the residential streets west of the river is done, but there are still some missing in the Skavanger and Saggrenda areas.
I have startet mapping residential streets east of the river, however there are a lot of work to do. Could use som help from other mappers in Kongsberg :)
My long term goal for the Kongsberg area is to map tracks/trails/paths around town and classify them for hiking and mountain biking (singletrack).
This is great little island, a residential island with the Pirate theme.
All the roads are marked with Pirate names
Pirate Lane, Silvers Tier, Pirates Place, Spyglass Lookout, Captain Morgans Blvd, and best of all... Smugglers park :)
A wonderful treasure to find on a day when i was thinking about Biking the bike trails of Nanaimo, but decided not to as it was raining.. and i didnt want to hear the screeching of the wet break pads against the wheels. ... (im a good cyclist.. but multitasking in the rain... it's a good idea. .. gotta stop each time you make a waypoint and notes anyway.
About this treasure... if you ever go there.. even on an island which people didnt adversise togo to as the next island is another ferry ride away which is a provincial park with lots of trails... this one has Spyglass Lookout .. a dead end road where at the end you have a great view of the city against the contrast forground of this natural mini-beach at low tide & marsh area at high tide. .. Just taking a moment to listen to the wildlife. then listen to the background noisy big city.
A great day of mapping. :)
It'll show up soon... just gotta decipher my notes. (you'll see the GPS tracks anyway)
