Hi!

I got on a trip to denmark with family, vester husby.
I try to map a lot of ways we walk/drive, but as I got no bike, I walk a lot and as ways are long, I just map a part of them.
Coastline was a bit out of line, corrected it.
Weather is fine, sunny, windy, nice, I got enough time to map so far.
As I got not danish keyboard and I´m lazy, I have not tagged all correct by now, but ways are in so far.
Some more to come.

That habit of Potlatch of deleting ways without telling you, or causing split ways to generate overlapping ways gets tiring fast, and is a pain in the ass to locate and fix. I'm wondering if this is not the lost-connection-not-saving-changes thing, but since there is no way to actually know whether the "retry" option actually worked, it's impossible to tell...

In any case, it didn't prevent me from setting up another bus route. It was a mess at the entrance on Laurier from Laval campus because not only was the RTC map slightly incorrect (AFAICT), but somebody had set up the one-way exits in the wrong direction, which confused for a while.

Now I just need to figure how to make a relation between relations in Potlatch.

I was invited to attend the official launch of the Google Map Maker service in the Philippines last October 7. I blogged about the event in my blog here: http://vaes9.codedgraphic.com/posts/google_map_maker_philippine_launch

The post is quite lengthy and the last part talks about OSM vis-a-vis Map Maker so you guys might be interested in that.

Finally got around to do a bus route. Why one in Quebec City? Easy: because the Montreal transport authority has no mapping at all on its website. Also, I ran that route for years over a longer distance than I do the routes here in MTL.

However, the current setup for bus routes is thoroughly inadequate. As currently defined, it is not even capable of handling a simpel case of opposite direction stops on different ways of a double-carriageway. Don't even get me started on loops with different number of stops in each directions!

ETA: ANybody knows how to make relations between relations??

Things I've dabled in the last week or two:

- Did Meru Heights and Taman Meru in Ipoh, Perak. These are from tracks I've contributed to Malsingmaps earlier.

- Slowly starting on the ring roads around Ipoh, Perak.

- Tracked the NS highway from KL - Ipoh - Butterworth. My KL-Ipoh tracks are of much better quality as I was patient enough to drive slowly on the slower lanes and got good separation between the dual-carriageways. When it came time to drive to Butterworth though, it was a national holiday and the really slow drivers all came out ...

- went a bit overboard with SS1, PJ. Interestingly, can't seem to find where Jalan SS1/42 is. There's SS1/41 ... and SS1/43 ... but no idea where SS1/42 is.

- Did Seksyen 51A, PJ ... was visiting the area on quite a few days as my car was in the workshop there. The older road signs here are labelled "Jalan 22x", whereas the newer signs are labeled "Jalan 51A/22x". Am going to standardize on the newer format.

- Started on SS2, PJ though I wish i'd started on SS3 first ... looks smaller.

- A few main roads in Seksyen 14, PJ.

- Desa Sri Hartamas, where my office address is.

- Major roads cutting across Damansara Heights.

- Pusat Bandar Damansara.

- SPRINT highway. Having fun with the interchange of damansara-link and kerinchi-link.

- Went to the market at Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

I've mostly focused on the major roads, I may zoom into the smaller residential roads later, or hopefully someone else will fill these in.

I went on a fairly local expedition with a buddy yesterday. We covered a decent mileage at a decent speed and we did some new tracks in the process. Highlights included a newish bridleway North of Girton which took us to the guided busway (they're making good progress with that, looks like this in both directions: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8947936@N07/2934605215/sizes/o/in/set-72157607967786251/ )

Later on, we biked and hiked around Stow cum Quy fen for a while and found some new tracks there, although one poorly signposted one eluded us - we found ourselves in a dead end corner of a field, surrounded by stinging nettles.

To finish up, we decided to try to traverse a public byway that we've previously always been scared off by the sound of many barking dogs in the night. We had just crossed the bridge over the A14 when we came across a burning motorbike: the rear tyre had come off and flames were coming out of the petrol tank. The tank cap had been removed, so it looked like a deliberate act of vandalism rather than an accident. Shouted out and looked around a bit to verify that there was no injured rider out of sight somewhere, then called the police to notify them. The police ran a search for the registration plate and meanwhile called the fire service to "turn the fire off or you know what I mean" (those were roughly the dispatchers words!).

Since we were asked to wait there in case the fire truck needed directions, we stood around and watched the (not-very-impressive) flames for a while. Eventually, silhouetted against the setting sun, a lone firefighter appeared over the line of the bridge. It looked awesome but I felt that taking photographs before we'd introduced would have appeared suspicious. Once we'd had a chat with him, a load more firefighters showed up, which still looked quite awesome:

http://www.codeplex.com/OsmScout

Vielleicht nützt dem Einen oder Anderem das Program. Der Source ist in GPL / LGPL verfügbar.

Neue Ideen sind immer willkommen.

While attending the State of the Map conference in Limerick, I noticed that women seemed to form only a small minority at SOTM '08 and, as OSM does not collect this type of data from members, I wondered if this was representative of the OSM community as a whole.

So, this week, I would like to ask:

From your experience, are the majority of OSMers male? And if so, why do you think this is?

Please comment here, message me via the site or at caroline.hangartner@student.manchester.ac.uk

Thanks and best wishes

Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
I signed up for OpenStreetMap about a year ago, and there were plenty of warnings that it's very addictive, but little did I know!!!
I do mapping in spits & spurts (like a lot of other people I'd imagine).
Progress

Turns out I have done a fair bit since I signed up:
Melbourne contributors
Looks like I'm the biggest contributor in greater Melbourne, scary stuff.

I've traced streets, added a lot of names and added some POI's like parks, foot/bike paths, pubs, schools etc.

Rough order of Suburbs I've done:

  • Essendon
  • Moonee Ponds
  • Aberfeldie
  • Strathmore
  • Ascot Vale
  • Flemington
  • Travancore
  • Kensington
  • West Melbourne (industrial area)
  • Strathmore Heights
  • Gowanbrae
  • Airport West
  • Keilor East
  • Avondale Heights
  • Maribyrnong
  • Maidstone
  • West Footscray
  • Footscray
  • Braybrook
  • North Sunshine
  • Sunshine
  • Keilor Park
  • Tullamarine

Since I don't have a GPS, I trace from Yahoo! imagery and fill in as many details as possible.

My usual steps:

Admittedly, the system does lends itself to messing up. I just spent some time figuring out a mess of overlapping ways, missing connections and misplaced signals.

And there the bit that worried me was that placing the intersection marker on a layer above the bridges would cause problems...

As an aside, how do you people tag prisons? That small service way going to the intersection is a prison entrance, but it doesn't show on the map. I'm not clear whether to use a combination of area and amenity tags. Should I go through the trouble of drawing the buildings? Or should I use a point to show on the map? I'm loathe to having both an area and a point to mark something (which is why I keep fixing that in parkings other small things like that). Of course, it's possible that, quite simply, amenity=prison is not currently shown on any renderers to begin with...
