Spent a bit of time tidying up what little mapping has been done so in Yeovil, Somerset (England) using NPE maps and local knowledge. Things including adding roundabouts, adding a number of one-way tags on dual-carriageways, correcting the direction of one-ways, addition of a few roads that are on NPE, correcting a few name errors where roads appear to have been (incorrectly) merged. To be honest though, this town of 35,000 is in desperate need of a mapping party! So much has changed since the NPE maps were produced that much of the layout is completely unrecognisable these days, and my tidy-ups were necessarily somewhat limited. Even getting accurate traces of the main features in the town centre would be a very useful improvement, let alone doing the residential roads in the suburbs.

Hello everybody.

I know I'm a bit late for it, but I still want to wish everybody a great new year 2009! I'm in good faith that we will still have OSM at the end of this year, so it can't get that bad after all, right? ;-)
I hope you also spent the holidays for the best thing you can spend your time on. And that's mapping of course! ;-)
I think the cold season is not that bad for mapping after all. Especially for me as my boots and trousers don't become so dirty if the ground is frozen when I have to walk into a field to map a power tower. :-)
OK, it is more difficult to determine the track grade (1-5) if there's snow on it. :-)
The thing that disturbs me the most is that it gets dark so soon. Especially as I'm a night person, so I don't manage to get up earlier to use the daylight. Believe me, it's quite difficult to find a power tower if it's so dark that you don't even see the line directly above your head. :-) Flashlights don't help much either. :-) And it's also so much easier to overlook a road sign if it's in a dark corner or next to a bush or tree...
But I never knew better about sunset times than now as a mapper. Here it was as bad as 16:29 on December 21st and has improved to 16:59 this weekend at about a rate of 1 minute per day.

Cheers,

Markus

Occasionally I've found streets which have particular land uses or addresses on either side of the street, but where I haven't wanted to set up a whole 'area' near the street to mark the feature.

For example, here on Chingford Road there is something odd with the house addresses. One side of the street has one postal street name and the other side has a different name. Yet the road in the middle is still called Chingford Road. I resolved this by creating a closed area with landuse=residential on each side and attaching the pseudo-street-names to that. But I wonder if there was a better way.

Now I am wondering what happens when the street itself has a particular land use. What about nearby Walthamstow High Street ? This is a street market and the way has been tagged with landuse=commercial. However, is it allowed to attach landuse to a way, or must it be a closed area? Is the right answer to create a fairly arbitrary area either side of the street as I did above?

Similarly, there are some odd roads which belong to industrial estates. I am tempted to tag those with landuse=industrial but I fear this is only allowed for areas. What's the official policy here?
