Tja, da stößt man nichts Böses ahnend auf OSM, findet die Idee nicht uninteressant und stellt fest, daß der eigene Wohnort bisher eher stiefmütterlich behandelt, wenn nicht gar vernachlässigt ist. Nun bin ich wohl auch mit diesem Virus infiziert. Naja, auf der Speicherkarte vom Garmin ist ja noch Platz für ein paar Tracks, die helfen werden, einen kleinen weißen Fleck auf der großen Karte mit Farbe zu versehen. ;)

normalerweise treibe ich mich ja in nördlich Gefilden rum. Aber gelegentlich beim durchsehen der Waychecker Ergebnisse und gelegentlichen anmailen von Neulingen zwecks korrekten anbinden von Nodes an Ways verschlägt es mich doch durch halb Deutschland.

Un was ich da heute gefunden habe entsetz mich ein wenig. Für den Laien mag es in Mapnick ganz ordentlich aussehen... sobald man auf Osmarender umschaltet wird für ein geübtes Auge das Chaos schon deutlich... Richtig schlimm wird es erst wenn man sich da sganze in JOSM anschaut... massig unverbundene Wege / kreuzende Wege ohne Node. Fürs Routing zur Zeit unbrauchbar... Und der letzte Edit ist auch schon mehr als 7 monate her. Naja ich habe schonmal angefangen mit dem korrigieren ... Hilfe ist durchaus gerne gesehen

I have compiled a large part of the outskirts Madrid, and the Comunidad de Madrid, tracing, investigations etc. Now time to do work on the ground. Some issues - need the boundaries of the provinces, towns, cities and districts - I wonder if these are available? There is also a need to add tags for different administrative levels without having the boundaries (e.g. district, barrio) , and for tagging rather indefined areas of land.
The details of the schools that have ben put on the map are very useful for looking up texts on the places to correct and add details.
There are many large new housing developments around Madrid - some are not on Yahoo maps, so need visited. Often streets have been laid out, but in the current crisis of construction one cannot be sure they have actually been built without visiting!

Three of us went to Danbury, a historic village in Essex that was completely unmapped on OSM, and mapped it. The party render is here. It was one of the coldest (and shortest) days of the year, but we got the bulk of the village done in around two hours.

This weekend with my new SE C702 mobile phone I went cycling around my town, tracking all the way. Sunday I then started to edit in the new ways and noted how much the online osm map is misaligned with my data.

With a margin of error of around 9 to 13 metres, I guess I cannot take my GPX points as gospel, yet my tracks consistently shows my reported route as being 20 metres off from that as reported by the main openstreetmap map. So I adjusted it accordingly.

It is very satisfying to be able to enter such vast amounts of new data to a map entry of my town that was previously only three main roads in total.

Now to enter the street names from a municipal map and wait for Wednesday to see the newly rendered map for my area.

Hab jetzt auch mein erstes Mapping gemacht. Hiermit sollte das Wüstenzeller Straßennetz eigentlich komplett sein. Ob ich mit den Tags alles richtig gemacht habe weiß ich nicht. Es wäre also nett, wenn dies jemand kontrollieren könnte. Feld und Privatwege kommen später.

I picked up a Garmin eTrex Vista Hcx last week, as my Zumo 550 just wasn't going to cut the mustard in areas without USGS Urban Area coverage; the tracklog sample rate is too rough. On the Vista I set the tracklog interval to 1 second; a 19-mile bicycle ride gave me a track with over 9,000 points, over 1GB in size :)

It turns out that another tool I own (ExpertGPS) does a good job of simplifying and manipulating GPX tracks, so I reduced that to 122KB and about 1,000 points. At that level I didn't feel so bad about converting it to an OSM layer (in JOSM) and uploading it. (I did clean it up a bit). Although it most cases so far I've been tracing my routes in JOSM on the USGS Urban Area map, I think this might be my new M.O.

Subject of today's mapping: Alameda Creek Trail, beginning at Coyote Hills and including at the other end a trip through Quarry Lakes Regional Rec Area in Fremont.

Trying to clean up some of Queen Creek, AZ. Specifically trying get landmarks done and hopefully gps map new developments.

Habe heute mal so weit es ging Nickenich gemappt. Ist jetzt fast komplett.

I'm still working on the tags to get them perfect. I suppose this is where one gets bogged down. ;)

Then suggest people donate to openstreetmap instead! Whether cash or contributing content, what a great idea! I had this thought in the summer and decided I would suggest it to anyone looking for ideas (among other things); real bonus points for anyone who updates an area (whether near them or just one they know well). I also put Open Rights Group on the list, but I think that's more UK-specific.

I already have a nice gps unit so no need for any new technology on the osm front. But that's another option for ya.

I am going to try to update the subway/rail information for the Brooklyn, NY area. I noticed some lines and tracks were missing.

Ich habe im Norden von Zeven einige Wege ergaenzt, im wesentlichen sind das Wirtschaftswege. Gute Gegend um endlos mit dem Veirbeiner zu laufen.

Wie angekündigt war ich heute in Leinach und hab angefangen den Ort in OSM zu mappen. Ich hatte mir auf einem Plan angeschaut wie ich ungefähr fahren muss um möglichst wenige Straßen unnötig oft zu befahren. Anfangs lief alles ganz gut, da die Straßen gut ausgebaut waren und die Kreuzungen übersichtlich waren. Später bin ich dann aber in den Ortskern gekommen, wo ich die Orientierung immer wieder verloren habe. Die Gassen wurde auch immer schmaler, so dass es mit dem Auto schon mal eng wurde. Auf der Karte war auch nicht klar erkennbar was Straßen und was Feldwege waren, daher bin ich öfters umgedreht, da ich mich erst nur auf richtige Straßen konzentrieren wollte. Die Karte hab ich eigentlich nur genutzt, um die Orientierung zu behalten, wo die Hauptstraße ist. Das Problem war, dass die Ortsdurchfahrt wegen Bauarbeiten teils gesperrt war und ich so nicht den nördlichen Teil mappen konnte (sind nicht mehr viele Straßen).
Auf Grund meiner zwischenzeitlichen Orientierungslosigkeit habe ich auch ein paar Straßen übersehen. Die Straßennamen habe ich leider auch nicht alle notiert/fotografiert, so dass hier ein paar wenige fehlen.

Auf dem Rückweg dann habe ich noch kurz ein paar Weinbergswege zwischen Leinach und Erlabrunn abgefahren. Den Weinberg habe ich natürlich gleich mit kartografiert.

Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass Oberleinach quasi komplett ist und Unterleinach zu gut 2/3. Die Weinbergswege sind nur ein Ansatz der Wege in dem Gebiet, aber der Rest muss am besten zu Fuß erledigt werden.

So a few weeks back I had laser eye surgery at the London Vision Clinic. This is great, because it means I can read street signs from a distance and I don't have to wear glasses. I do have to avoid contact to the eyes for a few weeks, so no swimming, boxing and so on.

I've been walking the streets near my home in Leyton, London, adding street names and the occasional missing road. When I find an unnamed road I like to walk all the way along it looking for features like pubs and footways not on the map. Often there are whole side streets to add, which you wouldn't spot if you didn't walk the whole length of a street before naming it.

Sometimes this means following a maze of footways round a council estate. Yesterday I turned a corner and came across a group of teenagers. I walked past them and one jostled me as I passed; then they started hassling me. I didn't speak, which seemed to annoy them more. One of them punched me in the eye, which was a bit worrying, but I don't think it tore open the flap cut for the laser surgery. I would have liked to hit back, but they were eight, and I really didn't feel in the mood. I walked away while they tried to find some weapon in people's front gardens. In the end one of them followed me as I walked away and threw a traffic cone! (It missed.)

Fortunately I caught the eye of two blokes driving past in a car as this happened. They jumped out and chased off the gang ('YOU LITTLE ****!'). Perhaps it is not a great idea to go off down the side streets, even in bright daylight. Somehow, I seem to attract this kind of trouble.

Anyway, to get back on topic, there are a few questions I have:

- How do I get Merkaator to show the satellite imagery as background?

- I am playing with an Acer Aspire One netbook. It's great, but I wonder if there is one with built-in GPS? Or a suitable combination of netbook plus GPS receiver plus software to record traces under Linux?

Mapping my vacation in Argentina: seems that ther is plenty of roads missing on the map - loads of work to do during the christmas holidays.
Hope its helpfull for other people travling around in this wonderfull country.

Gestern bin ich mal durch Zellingen gefahren und habe noch ein paar Kleinigkeiten in der Karte editiert. So habe ich einen (kurzen) Track neben dem Freibad hinzugefügt, allerdings nur teilweise, da es schon dunkel war und ich den Weg nicht mehr richtig sehen konnte, also bin ich wieder umgedreht. Einen Straßennamen habe ich überprüft und geändert (Hinweis aus OpenStreetBug), zwei Parkplätze hab ich noch hinzugefügt sowie ein (Möbel-)Geschäft. POIs fehlen eh noch viele, da muss man mal mit nem Ausdruck von OSM rum laufen um alles einzutragen. Werde mir dazu evtl die Unterstützung von MacPerforma5200 einholen.

Nachher geht es nach Leinach, was bisher noch fast gar nicht gemappt ist.
