Took the train from Waterbeach station to Ely today, then walked the 12 miles back along the west side of the Ouse/Cam that was previously largely un-mapped. A very chilly, misty morning but it was windless and not raining, so actually a very pleasant walk. There was a short section that I did last weekend, so I by-passed this via a byway/bridle way running south from Little Thetford, which is also now on the map. I had to make quite a number of adjustments to the alignment of the river Cam, which I think was traced from satellite and originally crossed the path that I was following. It now actually runs between the two embankments for the whole route! There is a single footpath south of Little Thetford which I put in a stub for, don't know where it goes but it heads towards Stretham - this will need mapping at some stage. Most of it is also tagged embankment=yes, although there's a short section which doesn't follow the embankment and actually goes between a couple of lakes and the river. Will need a return trip to map these lakes plus the adjacent embankment. Also a section of embankment just east of Waterbeach station needs adding.

Whilst travelling to watch a cross country race I detoured to map a load of nonames stuff just south of the big woods by Ruislip Lido. Looking at the nonames layer there is quite a few chunks that need a load of naming in this area of London. All a bit far for for a casual trip for me though.

Greetings people,

I'm a college student in Colchester, Essex. I found this site on TechCrunch and I'm very eager to map what I can.

I've just done the majority of my estate and quite enjoyed it so I'm sure to be doing alot more.

I love all freedom of speech projects but especially this one since I can really contribute (willingly) and sometime in the future use the data somehow.

Anyway, just saying what I have to say.
(And here comes the inevitable cheesy newbie finishing line)

Happy Mapping,
James Pain

ENG:
Originaly I was just looking for some maps of Iceland but this OpenStreetMap idea was rather nice and I noticed some roads and many cyclepaths was missing in my naborhood ... time to contribute to the project! :-)

DK:
Egentlig ville jeg bare finde nogle kort over Island men denne OpenStreetMap ide var temmelig smart og jeg opdagede at nogle veje og mange cykelstier manglede i nabolaget ... tid til at medvirke i projektet! :-)

I am jsut wondering whether trhere is a way of mapping elemenst only for certain groups of users.

For example, there may be areas that may only be passed by certain groups who are allowed there by their job or something.

It would be good to have a way of sort of "categorizing" map objects, for example there could be a field "limited_to" that the ncould contain something like "oxford_students".

When downloading maps, these areas could be enabled or disabled in some way.

Any ideas about that?

Regards,
Nik

I recently discovered the landuse=grass tag (osm.wiki/Proposed_features/Misc._urban_open_space) and I have started applying it to local areas around me, based on local knowledge.

I'm in two minds about this tag though. I think we should map these little grassy areas in these urban areas. I think anything landuse=grass means that people can walk over it, but their shoes might get a big muddy. In otherwords it's a step below highway=track. In fact most of the landuse=grass areas I've been mapping have had a highway=track way going through them. A area tagged with landuse=grass could be used for routing. It also makes the map look nicer and more accurate.

My only complaint is with the name. I don't like it. Should we tag the whole serengetti with landuse=grass? I don't like bringing in localized terms for things (eg landuse=village_green). I think tags should be understandable to what's on the ground ("Oh this bit of ground is used as a grassy area"). This makes mapping easier, since you don't have to have the Map Features page open.

Several weeks ago, some friends and I went riding in Healdsburg, CA and the surrounding area up in Sonoma County. As always, I collected GPS tracklogs.

This morning, I finally got around to uploading the tracklog, and before I even started using the tracklog, I noticed that appeared that nobody had even begun to clean up the TIGER import at all in downtown Healdsburg, so I have mostly been cleaning up the streets against the Yahoo aerial maps.

Someone will really need to go collect some data on the ground in Healdsburg, because there are quite a few places in the Tiger data that just don't make sense based on the aerial photography: streets that don't seem to exist, streets that don't connect but appear that they should, streets that do connect but appear that they shouldn't, and so on.

I did the best I could, with what I could be reasonably sure of based on the aerial photography. Unfortunately, my GPS tracklogs were primarily in the rural areas surrounding Healdsburg, so they weren't particularly useful for cleaning up downtown Healdsburg.
