Good Day,

I must say that this is a real kick-ass website for hobbyist and navigation hunter like me, and I would like to ask if someone can give me a link or a detailed way of adding a MAP, based on my location.

I have tried adding the map, I saw the new screen, I have a pen and I guess it's use for drawing? so How I will proceed now? do i need to have any extra software or Hardware device so that I can add new maps?

just so let me know guys. thanks a lot!

There was a fairly big gap in the map in this area. So far I've had three fairly long trips (about 30 miles each) mapping the back roads between Charing and Faversham. Most of the mapping was done in the dark, which has both good and bad points.

I was using two GPSr units hung on the dashboard next to each other. One GPSr was loaded with OSM maps (converted using MKGMAP) and the other was loaded with City Navigator maps. Both units were tracking (with "lock to road" turned off) so I got two tracks for the price of one.

The benefit of using two GPSr units like this is that I can see what roads have been mapped AND what roads should be there (assuming the CN maps are correct, of course). In unfamiliar areas (like this one) I can get a feel for where roads are going to go before I head off down them (and I can see which roads are dead-ends too). Both units were in north-up orientation so I didn't end up getting totally disoriented (since I was looping back fairly often).

One small downside of two concurrent GPS tracks is that they get joined together if you upload both tracks under the same userid. So instead of two separate tracks you end up with one track that's constantly bouncing between points on the two tracks. It makes for an interesting ladder design.

There are still plenty more back roads to map in the area, so I will be making more visits to the area.

I came across to this website for navigation, but I guess there aren't any available forums or discussion boards to ask questions.

so I came here PM'ing hoping for a chance to have someone answer my inquiry.

My questions is when I am using Google Map I just type this coordinate for example

+34° 5' 52.67", -118° 20' 38.21"

and it shows me the current location

but when i try it here, It shows an error, could you or somebody help me translate that coordinates so that the openstreetmap searcher can understand it and show me the location of that coordinates.

hope you can send me the translate coordinate

thanks a lot! for reading and sharing! :)

In addition to the Maxspeed style I posted earlier, Merkaartor now also has a style called "Lighting" that displays ways with the "lit=yes" tag in yellow, and "lit=no" in a dark grey. Once Merkaartor allows me to also select the canvas background color from a style definition, I'll switch to a dark background, giving something similar to a night mode.

If you don't run Merkaartor SVN, you can get the style from
http://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/applications/editors/merkaartor/Styles/Lighting.mas and load it manually (Tools > Preferences | Style | (*) Custom).

After re-discovering the cool http://wince.dentro.info/koord/osm/KosmosMap.htm by StefanDausR, I created a style for the Merkaartor OSM editor:

Another trip to Galway today.

I've covered the R339 up to the L3110 from Monivea to Abbeyknockmoy. From Horseleap Cross then towards the north through Cooloo, on that stretch I cross two R-roads and ended up on the R362 in Creggs. From there back into Athleague and on another backroad up to Kilcash.

Just Shaun and Stephen in the pub last night, but we had a good chat about various OSM ideas. I'm trying to remember them all. Ideas seem to come thick and fast after a few pints, and then I forget to follow them up.

Stephen was showing us his trackmyjourney.co.uk stuff. Today I notice that this is not mentioned on the wiki at all, and barely mentioned on the site anywhere. Stephen's hiding his light under a bushel. It's a nifty little J2ME app which he has been busily adding features to. It does GPS stats, hence the name, but also shows OSM maps, lists nearby POIs, and allows you to record waypoints with annotations suitable for later inputting into OSM.

...but what would it take to have a mobile editor submitting changes directly? Authentication seems to be the main hurdle. A simple interim solution might be for OSM to provide a basic web interface for editing/creating a node (and setting tags on it). The app could then launch a mobile web browser pointing at the URL (login and cookie session done as normal) The app already launches a browser to view read-only node data.

He was also explaining about how he had to code graphics routines to break up areas into triangles, and position lettering for road names. There's quite a few mobile apps like this which have a lot of logic which might be described as "rendering" logic. How difficult would it be to rip this out, and have it available as a standalone desktop rendering system? It'd be fun to see lots more alternatives listed on the rendering page. Apps for creating one-off map images or tile sets. Java based renderer could done as a JOSM plugin.
