There is a nice article about OSM at linux.com.
"We have written about the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project many times, but we have yet to explain how to get started with it as a contributor. Since it is the vacation high season in the Northern Hemisphere and many more people will be hitting the maps, this is the perfect time."

This is a great introduction for newbies. Go read it and then send it to all your friends (actually, yes, why not):

Hallo Leute,

I went for a walk through downtown Brisbane last night, leaving a trail in OSM of newly-captured features through George Street, Charlotte Street and a little of Albert Street.

There's still some more of Charlotte Street, Edward Street and Adelaide Street left to enter into OSM. Let's hope the renderers don't choke on the newly dense crowds of POIs (-:

The capture method of choice was the voice memo recorder of my mobile phone. I think it blends in quite well in the crowd - simply pretend you're calling someone because you're "lost", and, well, you have to "describe" where you are to the phone!

I just finished two trips, one from Portland to Seattle and one from Portland to Newport, OR on the coast. I recorded tracks from my GPS logger, and now I'm cleaning up the TIGER data for the covered areas.

Most of the trips were highway driving, which has given me some interesting insight into the TIGER data. The US Census Bureau documentation says that TIGER is a composite of multiple sources, and the highways show it.

US highway 20 in Oregon had some interesting artifacts. In Lincoln county, the way was a rough approximation of the road, with typical TIGER misalignment. As soon as it crossed into Benton county, the way was an exact match with the GPS track and the Yahoo aerial photos.

Interstate highway 5 in Washington state was interesting too. In Cowlitz county, I-5 was a single way with poor accuracy, but as soon as it crossed into Lewis county, it became dual ways with accurate placement. Based on the tiger:tlid tags, it looks like the dual ways were original Tiger data and not later OSM edits.

I expected that US highways and Interstate highways would be consistent for their whole length. But in retrospect, I imagine that not only do they export at county levels, much of the TIGER database was probably built by importing data at county level too.

Hi,

Well, everything North and East of Lake Macquarie is traced in anyway. There are sections of bushland West of the lake (South of West Wallsend) which haven't been marked in yet either.

My next task will concentrate on marking in as much of the bushland West of the F3 as is feasible.

All I can say so far is: That was Epic. Several thousand nodes a night for about a week and finally most of Newcastle is done.

My ground surveying is going to concentrate on paved cycleways and bush tracks. A lot of bush tracks (particularly MTB and dirt bike trails) tend to be made by civilians and so are mostly undocumented on any "official" maps.

Street name collection will probably happen at some stage, but I'd love to get some help for that one! Hopefully somebody in the region will see the map so far and think "wow, maybe this will be useful someday".

The one thing to keep telling yourself is "once it's mapped it's mapped", so the map can only get better :).

Another low priority job would be to mark landuse=residential, but it just makes the map look cool and isn't a great navigational aid.
