Ive added some more tracks and highway=path to Mount Doug. .. so now its looking much better. Still not done yet, as there is more to map. .. this is fun :)

Anyway, question for anyone reading.

According to signs in the park, NO bikes are aloud on any of the trails. .. yet in a couple cases, the trail is wide enough for a bike.
Some sections that are easy are hard-packed gravel.. and some are dirt trails. and some (towards the top) are more challenging 'actual hiking' trails. .. as you kinda need to be fit, to climb it. .. or it would just take some time, as a couple sections involve a little rock climbing.

I know that for trail sections that are concrete slabs.. its man-made. .. and actual steps are involved. .. other parts are natural rocks, which are like steps.

So i think the rule for this is to tag it like this

highway=steps (for the man-made steps)
highway=footway (for the man-made concrete sidewalk)
highway=path (for the general trail which includes gravel and dirt and steep trails.

highway=track
tracktype=grade2

... ideas?

Ive added the tracks from Gull Lake to Swift Current, SK so if nyone is around these parts.. hopefully it will help.
..
I plan on going back there and making sure it gets mapped.

...
Still a bit frustrated with the GeoBase Data.... so now i created a Canada WikiMAP tiles chart, hopefully this will relieve some frustration :)
osm.wiki/index.php/Canada_WikiMAP_Tiles
comments anyone? As it's a fine-line, but can't technically (yet) be used... although its free. .. (i think others are now becoming frustrated with me, as i continue to wonder about this) ... I'm probably more concerned than others.. as my goal is to create the routes across Canada. .. Id like to be able to be physically in each town, and be more verifying each bit of data, or confirming the roads.. rather than creating the roads from scratch... so i can go forward and place in markers for the important points of interest.
Do i have a valid point? or am i just being lazy? ... honestly.

Thanks,
Sam

I'm tracing I-17 starting in Flagstaff and heading south. In this context, tracing is:

1) adjusting the OSM motorway (mostly TIGER) to match Yahoo image,

2) adding a north (or south) bound motorway were OSM has only one way for this divided freeway,

3) adjusting motorway_links to match Yahoo image,

4) adjusting ways that connect to motorway_links to give a smooth transition to the existing ways, and

5) adding bridge and layer tags where needed.

Today I only mapped a small area with service roads and I managed to run my first big PERL program: planetosm-excerpt-area.pl

Don't misunderstand, it's not my program, I didn't create it. But after installation of PERL and a few missing modules it began to crunch planet files.

I plan to use parts of it for my own statistical calculations and maybe own mapsets (i.e. only objects I have contributed). But this is a longer way, not done in a day - at least for me.

Cheers

I'll ramble a bit.

I just completed a large chunk of Newcastle in JOSM (Yahoo tracing). I finally got around to setting up my desktop computer again after the move from Lismore and since JOSM runs much faster on it than on my eeepc a lot got done.

One surprise though was the discovery of a dead mouse inside my PSU. One of our dogs was licking the back of my computer so I looked inside. Hopefully I can sleep with the smell.

I added a few cycleways around Newcastle Uni yesterday, soon it might be worth extending the cycle map up this way (2 weeks ago there was only ~5km of cycleway drawn).

There's an insane amount of name collection to do around Newcastle now. No way I'll be able to find time to do it all myself. We need more contributors! *thinks of more ways to advertise OSM*. Hopefully the increased coverage will attract more people. As the map becomes more useful it will be great to see it in more practical applications.

It'd be cool if geocaching.com.au could add OSM to their list of cache location maps, that would certainly increase the awareness of OSM anyway.

I can't wait to see this Wednesday's Mapnik update for Newcastle, so much has been added in the last week!
