I have just started to draw the first roads for Albion with the Edit-Function on Openstreetmap.org.
Valuable information like street names etc have to be added later.

OSMXAPI is dead or useless recently, apparently a victim of popularity overload.
I needed to grab a whole city in the U.S. to check for braided streets. I've been using OSMXAPI in the past because the main API only allows small areas. But recently OSMXAPI has been overloaded or unresponsive. Even worse, when I have gotten through, it has been giving me error messages that a new restriction mechanism is in place. It has rejected my requests, even when they are ridiculously small (one was only 250kb through the main API).
The osmxapi error message suggested using the planet file instead. This sounded bad, because I did not want to download 4GB just to get a few megabytes of city data. But I found a great set of extract files for the US at
http://downloads.cloudmade.com/north_america/united_states
It looks like they update them weekly. Thanks guys!
I am using Osmosis to pull out my desired city by bounding box. This looks like a good solution.
Hi everybody,
Just uploaded a track near my house...
Claus

Hello everybody.
Have you noticed OpenRouteService (http://openrouteservice.org) already?
It's really cool and works quite well already, better than I thought it would as it's still pretty new AFAIK.
I already found some mistakes by trying several route calculations:
-The end of the A 23 near Heide had the oneway flag of the very last piece of road at the end of the Autobahn wrong in northern direction. So a big detour is calculated for Hamburg -> Tönning. It's corrected in OSM but OpenRouteService didn't update their data yet so you can still see it.
-A piece of the A 7 north of Northeim (which is north of Göttingen) in southern direction had been deleted. I put a mark in OpenStreetBugs (http://openstreetbugs.appspot.com) and somebody brought it back - thanks!
-The bridge of the A 8 over the B 313 near Wendlingen (east of Stuttgart) in eastern direction also had the oneway flag wrong. So the route sent you on the exit ramp and then back on the Autobahn. Subtle, so I'm glad I noticed it.
I'm sure we'll find many more mistakes like that as route calculations are much more sensitive to errors in the OSM data than the map renderers.
Especially, I see a lot of ways that should have a connection with another way but actually they don't. The distance is usually so small that you don't see it in the rendered maps but route calculations reveal them.
This seems to be a problem with Potlatch not snapping the way to the other way in some cases as all the cases where I've seen this were created_by=Potlatch 0.XY.
Also, people sometimes just draw a way across another way without connecting them which is very bad for routing algorithms. If two ways intersect, it should be clear in the OSM data what it is: An actual road crossing, a bridge or a tunnel.
I'm not pointing at any examples as I don't want to fingerpoint at anybody's work here. Also these errors are so frequent that I'm sure you'll find some near you so you can check my claims.

I happened to stumble across the "Routable garmin map" page on the wiki. Looks like routable OSM maps have been available for the last week and a bit. Interesting, I thought, so I duly loaded maps of the UK to my Garmin eTrex Vista. I already had a pretty good idea of where I was going this weekend, and the route I wanted to take, but I thought it would be interesting to see if they worked.
My personal feedback - I think it was giving perhaps too high a priority to "primary A-roads" - i.e. OSM trunk - compared with motorways.
It was trying to take me round the wrong way on 2 or 3 roundabouts. Perhaps this was a data issue however.
There were also times when it just ignored a few roundabout junctions - even if I was turning off what was the signed main route. Does it simplify some junctions for routing purposes - and just assume that you are travelling straight on?
Overall I would say it looks good - but there are some questions that need to be answered - e.g. how has it been done? Is it possible to create these yourself - perhaps with custom road styles or custom weightings for road types?
On the downside, the map I downloaded had "lock on road" set to on - and I forgot to turn it off until over an hour into my journey. As a result, I think that first hour of GPX trace will have to be deleted as useless (e.g. at one point I disobeyed it and carried on on the M6 rather than turning off - and the trace carries on up the sliproad until it realised I was still on the M6 - where it suddenly snapped back to the M6.)
I'm almost glad to find white spaces in my home town, so I won't have to drive far to do some mapping, nice :-)
I've just returned from Switzerland and uploaded a bunch of new roads and a few railways in Vaud and Valais, especially around Villars. I may have messed up the conflict resolution bit before upload, so my apologies if I've broken anyone else's work :-s
Added some footpaths near Tregardock/Treligga on the north coast.
Cleaned up Homerton Hospital, added some car parks and got rid of some broken ways.
I guess this is my first diary post :-) I've only just discovered this thing is here but it's a jolly good idea.
I've been making an effort to try to fill in the bridleways and footpaths around Cambridge and have been successfully finding and mapping lots of ways which don't currently have OSM coverage. I'm mapping all over the place but my end goal is to be able to declare individual areas of countryside (as defined by the roads surrounding them) "complete", having surveyed the roads all around for path entrances and followed all those paths and all their branches.
This is progressing pretty well, particularly for the squares defined by:
1) Madingley Road, Grantchester Road, New Road, Long Road
2) A428, Long Road, Barton Road, Main Street
Area 1) is the one I've thusfar located the most paths through. These paths go around (and through!) the Barton Road Firing Range site and form a pretty nice network North of Barton village. I believe I've almost explored all the branches of these paths although there may be some more waiting to surprise me.
I'll try and post back with occasional updates about where I've been.
My home area, especially the small towns around here, still are quite white spaces. I have added some roads in Bröl and in that vicinity.
Einige Landesstraßen, Kreisstraßen und Fußwege vom Ausflug nach Gerstungen eingezeichnet. Einige Stunden Arbeit!
