OpenStreetMap
At first, I felt nervous I don’t have an idea about Mapping. This is the first time I heard about it. But it made me feel excited too. By simply mapping, you can help other people not only about disasters/ calamity even in simple thing like mapping the Breastfeeding station. May some of us can’t think about it at all. But it is so important for all the mommies whom need to breastfeed their babies outside because for some of them it’s awkward. This is the one thing that made me realized like” wow” you can help some other people by mapping even some doesn’t think how helpful it is. May some it’s just simple but you considerate yourself other people whom badly need this. It made me impressed! In 3 months of mapping experience I do really enjoyed it. May I am not the same with my classmates who contributed so many edits. But I swear I enjoyed my mapping journey. I saw the importance of mappers out there. So guys keep it up! Amazed me!

I have discussed those changesets in Part 1 and Part 2. Now it’s time to complete this map.
I recently added the final gates in klia2, which is located at Pier J (Domestic). That’s the main message, however someone have added some lengths of lines connected to the taxiway. Unfortunately, these are not visible in the regular OpenStreetMap layer.
Before changeset
Apparently, they are the aeroway:parking_position paths. These paths are self-explanatory, which are the ones followed by an aircraft to safely deliver passengers to the parking spot (and terminal gates). Bing satellite imagery provides a clear view of these lines to be added.
After some months of intense work, we released a new version of OSMCha this week! This release includes two big changes: now OSMCha is compliant with the GDPR and we have a new way of receive and store the features.
We simplified a lot the way we store information about the flagged features. It will allow us to store more features on our database and it will be easier to the communities to add features to OSMCha. The documentation of this new resource is available on our wiki. If you need to monitor some kind of changes on OpenStreetMap and would like to use OSMCha for it, please contact us on our mailing list or opening an issue on our GitHub repository.
The GDPR is an European Union law that has the aim to protect the data and privacy of the individuals. To attend the requirements of the GDPR, now the users need to login on OSMCha to see any information about the changesets. However, after you sign in, you won’t notice any change and it will continue working exactly in the same way.
If you notice some error or have some new ideas for OSMCha, please don’t hesitate in contact us. We hope it will open much new possibilities to improve data validation on OSM.
When I choose to be part of cwts plusplus. I’m so consufed on what we’re going to do. I have no idea in what we’re going to do, but when the days running the questions on my mind are already answered. Like for example, how to do this particular thing? how to tag this little thing? Just like that. I had a great experience in this class. I learn different things like for example mapping a specific locations. Also it so much exciting when you are doing a mapping. When you are doing a mapping, is so hard when you are beginner but when you practice your self you will be better when you are doing mapping. When I do presenting last september, it such a good experience because we had a visitor from Red Cross. When I do presenting i’m so nervous because I don’t have self confidence but when I see my classmates smiling to me, my nervousness disappear. I believe that if you really what to do something, you are motivated to do it. You are inspire to do that. I’m so glad that I’ve been a part of this class. I learned a lot to this session! #pupsjcwts
In mapping our neighbourhood, I used OpenStreetCam, since Mapillary was unable to function in my phone, to take some pictures and it was automatically uploaded. Since some of the images that I captured was not detailed, I also did mapping by walking and roaming around in our neighbourhood then putting the data in my field paper. I observed that there’s a lot of shops especially sari-sari store, schools, unnamed streets, unnumbered house and etc. To put the data from my field paper to OpenStreetMap, I used JOSM editor. By pressing ‘B’ in keyboard, it will draw and tag buildings automatically. I also downloaded house number tagging tool to tag house number and the shortcut for this is pressing ‘K’. Then using node and pressing ‘F3’, the presets will have different tags to use like for example, “sari-sari store” tags as shop=convenience, “schools” tags as amenity=school and etc.
I realize that this program is something that I will treasure in my college life. Sounds dramatic but I am lucky and glad that I join to this program because I have learn so much about mapping. I also realize that helping the community is not all about joining cleanup drive, blood donation, recycling program, and etc but sitting, using laptops to map the neighbourhood or even some parts of the world is an also incredible thing to do to help community (I hope you can get my point here :D). Besides, I learn how to cooperate and associate to my groupmates or even my classmates. We are making a “bayanihan” in a simple classroom and together helping the community by mapping. Lastly, I also want to thank our instructor in guiding and teaching us about this program. I sincerely appreciate his commitment in our class.
My favorite part of OSM is categorizing the buildings and roads. I am getting much more efficient, and I am even exploring areas further away from my home location. Unfortunately, the one part of my process that has let me down is my android phone device. I am surprised by this, but I think it shows focus has moved away in this time of the ubiquitous android phone.
When I am on the ground checking road names and intersections, it is hugely helpful to check my screen for OSM data. It has replaced all the pen and paper requirements. But the one thing that I cannot see is whether the no tag is present. The lack of this information has had me checking streets where I had already checked previously.
And I fairly often map address nodes on the edge of building ways, since there are often multiple addresses associated with one building, and the only way to map them when doing a ground survey is by mapping the addresses seen on the entrances.
At last, I am finishing mapping the 50.0 m satellite imagery of my neighborhood. It took around 2000 nodes plus on my total edit. To be honest, it was difficult to map my neighborhood. Because of the dense and subdivision area that I live in, in short, too many houses. Another difficult thing is the imagery. I’ve used two imagery which was Bing and DigitalGlobal Standard imagery. I’ve kept on adjusting the imagery offset because of the misalignment of Bing to DigitalGlobal Standard imagery. After mapping and adjusting the imagery, I move on to naming variety stores or “Sari-sari store” in Tagalog and other important buildings. In the end, it felt good even when there was some obstacles in mapping my neighbourhood.
It was a great experience to be part of this mapping session, we have learn many things it was an honored to help others. In the first day of our mapping session we have no idea what we are going to do but our professor tell us that we are going to map, for me i was very interested because this kind of thing was new to me so i tried to map at my home, i didn’t know that there is a leaderboard which where you can see all the edits we had done then i tried to look at it, then i was suprised because i didn’t expect that im the number one in the leaderboard, so starting at that day i challenge my self to maintain that ranking that is why i continued mapping and mapping.
In mapping my neighborhood is not that just easy, for me its very hard since im not that familiar in each house numbers in my place so what I did was I mapped those building that I had known and one of these buildings are stores, water station, computer shop, laundry shop, bakery etc. in a case like this to be more informative to others we must put tags in every facilities or building that we’d known one of example of this is adding a tag in laundry shop.
In mapping street views we used mapilliary this is an app where you map in a way of video form that once you have saved it, it turns to a series of picture like what you have been seen in google map which is google street map. In this kind of mapping since we captured those different places we are able to see different information in the surroundings that we can use to add an additional information in osm, an information that satellite couldn’t see that mapping manually could do.
I entered the CWTS++ sessions with no idea in my head of what it was and basically what we are going to do. I was longing for a wonderful and surprising experience that the sessions might serve me. Yet indeed i was really surprised about the things that we were capable of doing with mapping. When everything was properly explained, it began to be so interesting and exciting that all of us can’t wait to go to the open street map to explore it on our own. I first started looking for my house, a friend’s house and even my classmate’s house. I couldn’t wait to create my first edit.
My first edit wasn’t actually included in the first task. hehe. I added the name of the building where i actually live in because there was no name on it. I used the iD Editor because at that time that was the editor that we have been introduced with. The following edits i made where a contribution of adding features such as buildings, streets, area and etc. on our country, the Philippines. And wow, we almost finished it in a matter of weeks. It was exciting adding helpful things on the map. I actually find mapping being so relaxing and it makes me more focused and i also feel fulfilled of the things that i have achieved in my mapping sessions.
Not be biased or so, i am quite disappointed about Google maps that they lack the services that openstreetmap offers. Google is the most used platforms in the internet yet openstreetmap is a hundred percent better at all costs. For example, I didn’t know where PUP San Juan was when i was enrolling. I know how to go there using our own family vehicle but i have no idea how to use public transportations for me to be able to go there. When i learned that openstreetmap provide the public transportation routes on their maps i was amazed and in awe realizing that this platform really does help people. Especially for people like me who aren’t really used to going out alone and isn’t really familiar with such places.
The time our prof announced something about mapping, me and my friends got curious about it. Per section, only 25 volunteers were allowed. That’s why, we volunteered for it. And fortunately, we got in. At first, I have no idea about mapping, I got curious that’s why I entered this subject. But as soon as the class started, it was explained to us what really mapping is. It is about mapping the places that was not yet mapped. When I learned about this, I tried doing it at home, I tried looking for places that was not yet in the map. I put them in the map and put labelings and names on it. Coffee shops, basketball courts and many more. The first time I edit a map, I started with only 11 edits. Then I saw my classmates that they already have 200+ edits. I was challenged to do mappings because of my friends. When I mapped the vicinity of Visayas, it was all wrong because I am not familiarized with the place. The buildings and row houses were not organized or aligned. But I immediately arranged it. That’s why my edits went higher. I realized that in order for us to make a map credible for the people, we have to assure that we know what we are writing.
When it comes to neighborhood task, we used mappillary. But unfortunately, I have no phone to use it. I tried borrowing phones from others but of course those phone were not always available. So I’m just working on my fieldpapers. I went around on my neighborhood and I’m not able to see their number in house so I can’t encode in my fieldpaper. But the buildings that doesn’t exist in OpenStreetMap like sari-sari store, hardware, internet cafe, grocery, fastfood chain in my place are already added my me and save it..
I also used JOSM in my mapping tool because it more fast and efficient in mapping. It’s more easy to map buildings but sometimes, I can’t identify if there’s a building or it’s just a land field. But overall, I prefer to use JOSM.

First, editing maps is boring in first time but as the time goes on and knowing that what we doing is important for others. It is really motivating to do our works. Using IDeditor,JOSM,Mapillary are the things we use to make it possible. All of the three I really like using mapillary, I dont know it just really fun walking outside and looking for other routes, It feels like I’m an adventurous. If a disastrous event happened, we also change or remap everything what the disastrous event affected.
Second, I’m a bit excited doing this activity aside of I explore some places around me especially the streetview, also knowing that I help other people for giving them information to know my place. It also help myself because to got a chance to know some place/routes in my neighborhood to be more familiarize in my town cause’ I live here for almost 6 years and it still amaze me because of discovering some routes and landmark in my neighborhood.
Like what i said earlier, I uses JOSM and IDeditor to edit maps via satellite what we do commonly. I also uses mapillary for the streetview at my neighborhood but I didn’t finish what I suppose to do in field papers because it is hard to upload.
The edits I’ve made in my neighborhood are made possible through the use of josm, mapillary, and a field paper. Gathering information, such as house numbers are quite challenging since some are not easily seen while roaming around the street. Capturing and uploading street level imagery, is easier said than done since it takes more time to do this, rather than mapping. I’ve added buildings since there are still some unmapped buildings.
For me, the CWTS++ program is an adventure. I got to interact with other people, roam the streets in my neighborhood, and learn new set of skills. It isn’t easy to go on an adventure. Just like any other adventure, transitioning from one thing to another isn’t always easy. From using I.D. to JOSM, at first I had a hard time using it, to be honest. But as time got by, I got used to it and eventually I saw that it was better than using I.D. since it made editing much easier. What I liked the most during this program is capturing street level imagery since this is where I personally got to have an adventure. Roaming the streets and seeing my neighborhood made me want to explore more about it. Lastly, an adventure wouldn’t be made possible without a guide. Sir Erwin Olario taught us what we needed to know about mapping and showed us the importance of helping our community. Thank you Sir Erwin!
So my time in CWTS++ is drawing to a close. By tomorrow Oct 25,2018 I will finish CWTS++. Although this is not the end of my mapping sessions, I plan to continue mapping so long as i have spare time. I have learned a lot during these few months. I found out I preferred ID Editor rather than JOSM, I learned shortcuts and different tricks to make mapping easier and more efficient. During the start of CWTS++ our group focused on mapping in the Mindanao region of the Philippines. This was the starting point of our mapping sessions. Through the months and certain events we focused on the HOT Tasking Manager to help emergency cases around the Philippines. Further down the timeline we learned about JOSM, its functions and mechanics to aid us in mapping. And now were reaching the end of our CWTS++ sessions. I’ve learned so much and hope that i contributed at least a little to the mapping community. Overall I value my decision on joining CWTS++, it gave the opportunity to help others and learn a lot in return. So for my CWTS++ class thank you for everything.
I would call my neighbourhood mapping experience as an adventure. It’s like I’m in another country with my phone out and my camera on and with my field papers in hand. The capturing app I used was Mapillary and the editing software I used was ID because JOSM was not working properly on my laptop. I got to revisit the other streets in my neighbourhood and I got to do walking exercises as well. My neighbourhood was very big and has a lot of roads so it took a while to take all the street level imagery but it was all good and worth it.
From day one, this whole CWTS++ program was a blast. First of all, I was given a chance to be one of the coordinators of this program (in which I hope that I did not disappoint) and I think that was the first time that I was given such a role. My whole experience here was a really great thing for me because I learned that there are a lot ways to help people. I never thought that mapping can be a very vital part of the society until I joined this program. I really learned a lot of things throughout the whole course whilst having fun as well. The Maptime! sessions was also a lot of fun because I get to learn things from professionals that I can surely apply for the future. Surely, everyone who was involved in this program had a lot of fun as well. I am very thankful to have given the opportunity to help the society just by adding nodes and lines and areas. I learned a lot from this and I can’t wait to apply it in the present and for the future.
As for my whole journey in cwts++, I’m very thankful that I’ve gained a lot of experiences, memories, and lessons in life. This will be a memorable journey for me. Though the program will come to its end, I’ll try to continue and apply all the lessons I’ve learned here. Continuing what I’ve started here, will be a great help to enhance my skills and to help other people. Finally, I want you all to know that being a mapper brings you a new different experience. So, I’m gonna use this opportunity to encourage you to join us and map. Once again, thank you!
