There is JOSM plugin for working with OSM-Public Transport Data: JOSM/Plugins/PT Assistant. And it has new tricks to offer

A few weeks ago, I built and released Meet Your Mappers, a web tool that lets you identify OpenStreetMap mappers in an ares of your interest. I received a lot of great feedback and encouragement and have addressed some of the main concerns people raised. Here’s an overview of the updates.

Box shaped areas of interest

The single most important piece of feedback I got is that the tool is too hard to use because of the need to identify the area of interest by looking up an OSM relation ID. This is error prone and unfriendly to those not too well acquainted with how administrative areas are mapped in OSM.

This was partly done by design (I didn’t want to make it too easy to use, because of the demands on my bandwidth and the Overpass API) and partly because I was lazy (I didn’t have to build a map widget).

But folks kept asking for it so I added a map widget so you can draw a bounding box to indicate your area of interest. The relation ID option is still there as well.

A day we all look forward where we will be able to learn how to help other people with small things such as mapping communities. Today in CWTS++ we learned that we have already made 12,000+ edits in mapping within our group! I was so happy to find out that all of our hard works and interest in mapping had a wonderful result. Also, Mr. Olario wanted us to know about the flooding that happened in India and that it needs to be mapped for the authorities to easily locate residential areas that are unknown to them. We were also taught how we can improve mapping and how we can map more accurately like editing mistakes such as the unaligned roads and houses that are mapped the wrong way and etc.

After that we discussed our homework which is the field papers by group. In the field papers we printed our neighborhoods and try to gather much information before the next meeting. Within my group I noticed that they were able to map missing roads, streets, they also named the streets and gathered the house numbers within their neighborhoods. I have also mapped the name of the stores that surrounds my neighborhood. Most of the stores were canteens since it is near a university.

When I mapped a location of our neighborhood. I found out that some of buildings, houses wasn’t recognize. And it become so hard for because we’re newly settled here. But i tried to walk around to my neighborhood I discored that some houses doesn’t mapped even some building but I check different roads i couldn’t find a problem within it.I enjoy to walk around because a new settled here I discovered diffirent places.

Hello, anybody home? Found a link to this website in an “AccessWorld” article and thought it would help me out eventually perhaps. O&M skills aren’t quite up to par but I’m good for now. Do I have to fill in all these fields? Guess I will find out here in a bit. Good day all. Still trying to figure out what this place is all about. Maps are cool and we are cool.

Mapping my neighborhood was quite easy, most of it was residential houses and businesses along the main road. But knowing each details was different. I have noticed that my neighborhood’s historic architecture was preserved in some houses like the Batungbacal ancestral house and establishments. Since Santa Ana was the only district in Manila which was spared from the bombing of World War 2. And most of the buildings were preserved, maintained and even business establishments adapt the architecture of the neighborhood so that it would blend. I have learned that this feature in my neighborhood is rich with culture that is preserved well in time and blessed that we still have it. And with observation you can see through the details of what may be seems to be new.

A couple of days ago, I was given the task to map our neighborhood, which quite different from the one we’ve done every meeting or the one that been assigned to us. So in the first attempt to make a map of my neighborhood, I failed it because of some reason. I don’t know why because I’ved tried several times to download the map, but after downloading the pdf, the picture is still turning into black. But after the last meeting this Thursday, my instructor helps me to map my neighborhood. He never encounters some problem regarding with the pdf of the map which I can’t do properly. But then after receiving the link from him I proceed with my task till I finish it perhaps. There are some that are not yet done tagging and also some are not yet on the map. After surveying some area in my neighborhood, I noticed that there is a building that are existing old and new building around. But there some area that I can’t survey because of some hindrances. I hope I could do properly.

When I was making my own field paper which is an assignment last week, I have encountered getting trouble of the task because it ends up full black on print. Days have passed we tried it again luckily it works but we only have minutes left to do the mapping. But we have given a chance to map and discover our own neighborhood. In our barangay, there are mostly residential houses apart from when I was exploring I have noticed that our chapel was inside our covered court which is quite difficult when mapping the area. Also, our street was countless they used it to go to there place in a faster way. It was fun because mapping help people to know new places. Like in our street, we have lot of sari-sari store and open 24 hours. Some store are not permanent because when I bought pizza last year the store named “Pizza House” but today the store was became barber shop. That was my experience when exploring my neighborhood!!!

Hi guys base sa nakita ko sa aking neighborhood kasi nagikot po ako gusto ko lang po ishare na kung ano meron at kung ano madidiscover sa place ko. ayon saaking neighborhood may mga condos na malapit saamin yung lugar po kasi namin city po talaga siya meron pong groceries store, fastfood chain , hardware, salon ,bank at bakery. at sakop din po yung lugar ko ng subdivision tahimik lang po base po sa pagikot po magaganda po ang mga bahay na nakita ko malalaki po ganun at btw po medyo malapit din po kami sa san juan cemetery at shortcut going to greenhills .at about din po sa pag mammapping nakikita ko po na nakakatulong din po kami sa pagmamapping at pageedit ng mga mapa at yun lamang po salamat.

when i explore my neigborhood marami akong nakitang ruta and shorcut,marami pala nito samin hindi ko alam haha kasi hindi ako naglala-labas ng bahay,lets continue marami din walang name tulad ng 7/11,mercury drug and school in which na malawak naman para hindi mo makita so i decide to edit it at para narin makatulong sa iba para hindi na sila mahirapan sa paghanap at malaman narin nila na meron 7/11 mercury drugs and school dun,Anyway i fell so good na nakatulong ako kahit hindi nila alam ayus lang un basta naitama ko ang mali na nakita ko,Masaya ako na natuto ako ng osm thanks to CWTS++.

Hi guys. I want to share to all of you my fieldpaper work experience. Roaming and mapping around our neighborhood. I live in a wonderful neighborhood. It has lots of facilities. With stalls of street foods, small food establishments, banks, dental clinic, dialysis center, computer shops, bakery, sari-sari stores and etc. Making it the main attraction on our neighborhood. The grocery stores like Puregold and Super 8 and also the public market which make it easy for all residents to make an immediate purchase. We are also near on the main road of F.blumentritt so people do not need to travel for a long period of time. By means of this project cwts++ osm mapping I found interesting new spots or place that I’d never encountered in this place by two months of living here at Barangay San Perfecto, like the Dan’s and Norm’s eatery. I really like their fried rice that I recently discovered by doing this field paper mapping. On a certain point, while I was doing it I felt hungry so that i decided to eat on that eatery while doing this fieldpaper. And every time I pass by on San Gabriel Street, I always eat their specialty .

When I map my neighborhood, I felt so good helping others by mapping my neighborhood because there are so many places that is not specified or have names, just like our water station near in the corner I saw that it was named only water station but not the name of the company, I edit it and help others to know what water station it is. I like mapping my neighborhood, first time to help a community, btw sir if youre reading this im sorry if it is late. hehe, I love mapping.

This is my 2nd time mapping on a bike. The first time I mapped was using the field papers, it was a bit of a challenge because I was writing only on a bondpaper which is very hard to write on because I don’t have any platform to write on. The 2nd time I was mapping using mapillary, it was more challenging because I have to hold my phone while riding on my bike which is dangerous.Though it was a very fun experience. I was shocked that I don’t know that their are places in my community that I still don’t know like the very unusual setting of a religious area “HAIL KING JESUS” that I have seen the placement of the fellowship is hidden. Another place or building I have seen is a very high and very thin looking house/office of a lawyer in our neighborhood. I think that’s all of my experiece and discoveries for this mapping session and I find it much more fun than mapping on the computer because not only I exercise my body I also help my neighborhood in the same time having fun.

A Brief on LoGIC

LoGIC (Local Government Initiative for Climate Change) is a multi-donor collaborative initiative of GoB, UNDP, UNCDF, EU and SIDA, aims to enhance the capacity of vulnerable communities, Local Government Institutions (LGI) and civil society organisations for planning and financing climate change adaptation solutions in selected climate vulnerable areas. The Local Government Division (LGD) is the implementing lead of the project in partnership with UNDP and UNCDF (for technical and management support) in 7 (seven) districts (Kurigram, Sunamganj, Khulna, Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali, and Bhola) of Bangladesh designed to support roughly 200,000 most vulnerable households in 72 (seventy-two) unions. The benefits are expected to come out of climate change adaptation actions at various levels, scaled up through local government institutions incorporating high quality accountability and participation of the most vulnerable people.

Vulnerable people living in disaster-prone areas of Bangladesh have developed strategies and practices to cope with these natural events; however, they have inadequate empowerment to influence over development planning in their communities. In order to address the vulnerabilities of Bangladesh to climate change, the project envisages the following priority areas of action:

I was given the task to map my neiborhood during our CWTS++ class. When I started taking note of the memorable landmarks near my home i noticed that most of the Point of Interest locations were already mapped(i.e. Bakeries, General Stores, Chapels) so I decided to walk a bit further from my street then i noticed a few missing buildings while I was walking. So that was my new objective fill the missing buildings in my field paper. So far I have only listed a few missing buildings, but I do plan on adding more and the house number of each gate if possible in the future.

When I mapped my neighborhood for my Field paper, I’ve discovered two streets that I could use as an alternate route or shortcuts to the jeep stations, I’ve also discovered some newly built sari-sari stores, and while taking a short walk, I just discovered a school near to my home, I never knew that there was a school there at all, and after I finished mapping the 1st street near to our house, I started to map the 2nd street, though it took me a while to finish it, because there is a part in that street that has many people (“Mga tambay” hahaha), and they were looking at me while I was drawing houses in my field paper, I was kind’a bothered because they were staring at me the whole time, so I didn’t finish it that day, and went back the next day, good thing there wasn’t anyone in the street at 6am in the morning! :D and so I finished it by 7am without any car passing in the street, without people staring at me, and thanks to this activity, my neighborhood is now more familiar than ever.

When I do mapping my neighborhood. I just discover that there’s a new eatery restaurant. I discovered that they have a delicious batanggas lomi. We all know that we can get batanggas lomi in the Batanggas province. But here in Taytay, Rizal we have a batanggas lomi we’re batanggas lomi in Batanggas Province and batanggas lomi in Taytay Rizal are the same taste. You don’t need to go to Batanggas Province to taste the Lomi. I discovered also that on our area there’e no establisment like fast food chain and when my Professor discussed about our neighborhood mapping, we do exchange neighborhood mapping to see what we observe on the specific area. I discovered that only in Taytay Rizal have a unique name streets. Because we have a countries street like Australia, Japan, California, South Korea, New Zealand etc. Also, our area in Taytay Rizal can easily do mapping using open street map. Because when I talked to my classmate she can’t find her neighborhood because on her area there’s a lot of houses. So that it’s hard for her to map her own neighborhood. Our instructor told us to map our neighbourhood using Field Paper. As I roaming and mapping around our neighbourhood, there’s a lot of name of streets and also establishments that I’ve discovered just like new pharmacies, sari-sari stores and a water refilling stations. But there’s one thing I’ve discovered that caught my attention because it’s represent the culture in our barangay and that is an itik store. Our barangay is known for selling and raising ducks or itik alongside with municipality of Pateros. Actually, most of the products that sell in Pateros are come from our barangay because it is beside of Ilog Pasig. As time goes by, our duck raising industry is decreasing due to the polluted Ilog Pasig. However these days, there’s one store near our Barangay that selling and raising ducks. But because of mapping, I am glad that I’ve found a newly itik store that shows how our barangay can be able to continue our culture.

When the time I decided to walk around on my neighborhood, I discovered many things that I never seen and been before. I saw new buildings/establishments, apartments, carwash, convinient stores, and etc. I was amazed when I saw these new things on my neighborhood because I realized that the last time I went to that place was a long time ago.

After wondering about the new things that I found, I decided to map it. And then I realized that the map of my neighborhood or field paper that I have is not updated or accurate to what I see on my neighborhood. Like there are new buildings and establishments located at this place but it is not shown in my field paper.

In addition to that is there buildings that are no longer existing, yet it’s still shown in the field paper. So I decided to fix and edit my field paper so that It can be accurate and correct when I decided to upload it in web.

Walking and roaming around on my neighborhood is fun and exciting though it was scary at first because first of all, I don’t usually go out in our condo and our neighborhood is known for being a chaotic area. But I was confident that time that there will be no trouble that could happen because it is morning. furtheremore, I added new buildings and removed and renamed buildings that are no longer existing.

Lastly, I am happy that this assignment in cwts++ served as an opportunity for me to explore my neighborhood that leads to a result of discovering new things that I’ve never been encountered.

As I was mapping my neighborhood, I mostly know the streets in my neighborhood for I sometimes use my bike to wander around and because of that, I ventured streets that I am not familiar with then learning where the street would end. Biking really helped me know my neighborhood for because of this, I didn’t have a hard time knowing where to go next after going to a certain place. My neighborhood mostly consist of residential houses, there are some business buildings, sari-sari stores and shops but it is mostly residential houses. To conclude, I had a fun time mapping my neighborhood for I just use to wander around my neighborhood with my bike without really knowing what’s in my surroundings but now that I mapped my surroundings, I saw features that I didn’t realize that was their so now I can say that I learned new things about my neighborhood.
