The ongoing Mapathon for mapping vurnerable community of oil spilage in River state was reviewed. LionMappersTeam Enugu Campus have 832 Edits UniqueMappersTeam Yola have 298 Edits LionMappersTeam Nsukka have 109 Edits While the rest of the teams have no edit. The national coordinator pleaded that our best is not yet enough. He asked all to go back and do the needful.

The preview on the Ogrute Mapathon which will hold on 15th to 23rd February was done by the coordinator and he stated that the following must be done to qualify you for the Mapathon

Register the Eventbrite You must have at least 50 edits from task 6909 (oil spilage) to be qualified You must be an advanced mapper who knows how to digitise.

Questions, answer and Suggestion session. Chukwu Kingsley of LionMappersTeam Enugu Campus suggested that the team leader should be monitoring and check up on their members because from his observations on task 6909, many mappers are not doing the right thing. The national coordinator emphasizes more on it and tell the house why it is important to do it the right way.

Mrs Ifunanya Obim asked for the Hashtag that will be used for the Ogrute Mapathon. The national coordinator explained to her.

i would like to find an app, which records your voice and links it to the gps location , exemple : if on a race-track you could have the feedback from the app, and you can modify/add the recorded information in the log, just by speaking

for example :

voice-start-cmd : START -> starts recording/playing your voice/recording during , if no entry and silence no recording, if gps position has voice recording, plays it , but still listens to voice and changes/adds the recorded information linked to that particular gps position

pause-cmd ; PAUSE -> pauses the recording only plays gps-location-linked information

stop-cmd : STOP no voice play / recording

the final result will be if for example you say at the beginning of the track PAUSE, it will play the instructions/info you entered during a previous pass-by ………. 90 degrees turn to right ahead , go in breaks smoothly , ….. slight turn to left,

or whatever instructions a rally co rider gives to the pilot

Hi. During my engagement in swedish hiking groups I became aware of the need for a service for extracting GPX-files with huts and shelters to put into GPS-devices and phones.

I built a simple website to fill this need which was a fun and learning experience :)

The National Mapathon update of UniqueMappers Nigeria is done via zoom…..

Summary of the meeting hosted on zoom by the National Coordinator UniqueMappers Nigeria on 12th February 2020 by 8- 9:40pm

1. 6 Persons attended the meeting from 5 States representing 6 Chapters.

2. The progress of the Mapathon in each state was analysed.

3. The National Coordinator gave instructions to State Coordinators and Team leaders to motivate the mappers in their states and Chapters to map more consistently and efficiently.

4. The National Coordinator gave updates of ongoing mapping events and informed all about the JOSM Beginners Training/Webinar which will take place on 29th February 2020.

5. Questions and Answers session

I wished I realised earlier that today, 11th of February 2020, was the 10th year anniversary of my discovery of OSM. I would have spent a bit more time writing a proper entry with some numbers and highlights but it’s a bit too late to dive onto a long writing.

I’ll just give another quick shout to the Japan road alignement work that has been highlighted a few years ago and that I never really quit. There is still a lot to do. I, for some reason focused on the areas around Nagoya during the last 2 years, but if anyone wants to join, Japan is big enough :)

Happy to start another decade of mapping though. Happy anniversary to me!

Minutely Extracts

Minutely Extracts (protomaps.com/extracts) is a new service for on-demand OpenStreetMap extracts in .osm.pbf format.

Features

• Data is updated once per minute from the main OpenStreetMap replication diffs. Your changes on OSM.org can be consumed almost immediately, making editing more rewarding.
• Select a bounding box or draw a polygonal region up to 100 million nodes.
• Small areas can be extracted in seconds.

Details

• I am running Minutely Extracts as a public service to help improve the mapping experience.
• Code is available at github.com/protomaps/OSMExpress : this is a command line utility and serialization format specific to planet-scale, spatially indexed OSM data.
• Extracts do not include metadata such as version numbers, Changeset IDs, timestamps or usernames.
• Extracts are reference-complete for ways and multipolygon relations.

I’ve stopped this project in Sep 2020, mostly because I learned that I had misunderstood the concept of a “shared lane” on Dutch roads. There aren’t nearly as many as I had thought. Another project has spun off, though: checking primary and secondary roads in my area for bike accessibility. Primaries, in particular, are not usually open for bikes: either there’s an adjacent compulsory bike path (typically G12a) or bikes are forbidden explicitly (board NL:C9 or NL:C15). I’ve learned that the hard way when Komoot (based on OSM data) sent me on one such secondary one day. That particular problem was fixed the same day, and it got me started on surveying primaries and secondaries (in person, using Mapillary, or using public data on Dutch road signs) in my area. I see a tendency to equip more and more local secondary and tertiary highways with either an adjacent bike path or an (advisory) bike lane = fietssuggestiestrook, cycleway=shared_lane in OSM speak. This isn’t always reflected in OSM, yet. I’ve fixed some that I’ve come across, but I suspect there’s many more.

Because I find that they matter for bicycle routing, I’ll try and survey those that I can access easily, in province Groningen. Mapillary will help reduce my mileage. The idea is to tag all secondary and tertiary highways outside of town (buiten de bebouwde kom) with a cycleway tag (cycleway=no if none is present), except if they’re tagged bicycle=no or bicycle=use_sidepath. While I’m at it, I’ll also set mofa and moped tags, surface, and where surveyed locally: smoothness. Things like weight limits, updated speed limits and so on will be by-catch.

UniqueMapper Yola is doing well with only two mappers on their leaders board… They should involve more mappers and ensure consistency in mapping as only only one has a mapping record today while the second mapper mapped for the last time two days ago Q and A session

Around March 2019 I started work to import a large chunk of open data into Openstreetmap. Specifically, to improve the landcover coverage of Sweden. Mostly it concerned areas and features of forest, farmland, wetland, and highland marshes.

This post continues and somewhat concludes the series of thoughts I’ve documented earlier in 2019:

The import plan documents a lot of technical details. I maintained it to reflect the high level overview of the project throughout its life.

Why bother

My motivation behind the project was that I was tired to trace forests by hand. My understanding is that it would take a million of hours to finish this work by using manual labor alone. I, being lazy, always look for ways to automate it and/or integrate someone else’s already finished work.

On Saturday 8th February 2020 we had an intensive training and a little competition on mapping within the mapping team in UNEC in order to improve our mapping skills. It was educative and at same time fun. I AM HAPPY TO BE ONE OF THE LION MAPPERS UNEC CHAPTER
