To tell you honestly, i dont much explore through my neighbourhood til’ i needed to map and analyze our area, i really dont get to have walks around here ever since i was just a child. Some of the differences that I noticed in our neighbourhood is that in my side of the neighbourhood is a relatively more peaceful and quiet area, while in the other parts of my neighbourhood just seems to have a lot people even late at night, we still see and encounter people on the streets. What i’ve also noticed is that when you go straight through my side of neighbourhood is that you can get to pass by 3 sari-sari stores. We live by the Marikina River, it’s literally just beside my house and we often get a lot of room for some fresh air every morning. It’s often cold here when it gets windy during rainy seasons, I guess i can consider it as a special factor or a unique attribute to my neighbourhood. Another unique characteristic about my neighbourhood is that our street is actually named after my grandfather’s side, their sir name is “Quiogue” and so our street was actually named after them, “Quiogue Street”, since our side of the street is where our relatives live in.

While roaming around the streets in Sta Ana I got to a place I haven’t been. As I go along the path and finally reached the end. I found myself near our house. This is the first time that I have discovered an alternative route that lets me reach my house. As I continue to roam around that area, I have discovered new places that I haven’t been. Mainly all of the paths end to a residential place.

While I was mapping around my neighborhood (walking around) using field papers, to be honest I actually haven’t really seen all the in’s and out’s of my neighborhood even though I have been living here since I was a baby, it just never crosses my mind to explore my place until now haha. After mapping some area’s I realized that my place has that calm feeling when you walk around cause my area mostly consist’s of town house’s, subdivision’s, newly built house’s’ house’s for priest’s and sister’s, a Chinese temple and house’s for sale and also I noticed some houses don’t have their building number plastered on the front of the lot. It’s really fun to walk around knowing that I can’t worry about something happening because car’s, biker’s, and skateboarder’s are constantly running around plus with the breeze of the tree’s feels great, would love to own a bike and cruise around though. Although I have not fully explored my area I am curious to know others things in my place that are still not explored.

As person who don’t usually go out having this kind of activity helps me to know where i will be going and to know what kind of neighborhood i have.

In mapping my neighborhood I experience hardness, I feel happy and I encounter many people and houses in my neighborhood. I feel happy becuase while I`m mapping I enjoy looking for the new features in my neighborhood. I feel hardness because there are times that I encounter houses that is hard to know if its a building or a house. But just like our prof. said if we are having some problem in telling if its a housen or buiding mark it as building possible. I encounter a wrong linings of roads so I change it to make it right. In mapping my neighborhood helps me look the right way i going somewhere near our house or find a convenient store near our house. Because I’m new in this barangay so its hard for me to know if what am i putting was right. That’s all for now. 😅😅😁😁😵😵

In my street, there’s a River of life Cainta Church. Every sunday, naririnig namen mula dito sa bahay yung kantahan nila about kay God. I also observed na yung mga tag na nakalagay sa osm sa mga bahay, building yung nakalagay. And also the sari-sari store, building yung tags na nakalagay.Halos lahat building yung tags pero mga bahay lang naman yung mga neighborhood ko. On my fieldpaper, I draw box on the sari-sari store that I know and yung mga parati naming binibilhan ng mga ulam at pagkain namin. In my place, more on houses, sari-sari store, and public market ang nakapaligid.

Mapping my own neighborhood is fun because this is place where I grew up. Its was easy to recognize houses, stores, and other buildings because this is my neighborhood. But as I opened OSM to look for my neighborhood, I was shocked to see that almost half of the 0-100 meters is not yet mapped. My whole neighborhood are basically full of houses because I live in a subdivision. So that is the reason why half of map are empty.

Now its a challenge for me because I need to finish mapping the whole area of emptiness. As I started mapping my field paper outside, things went funny while looking for details. I’ve encountered this old lady who told me “What are you doing young man?”. I’ve said “I am mapping and getting details for field paper that I’m working on.”. She said “What field paper?”. I’ve said “Field paper is an assignment for us students in CWTS, this will help update the map online so that people could navigate and see the location they want to easily.”. The old lady said “Online?? Internet?? Internet makes us addicted to it and it could make tutorials of bombs or destroy the world!!”. I was confused because I only wanted to finish my field paper and this old lady came up to me saying Internet is going to kill us all. But I have no time for destruction for the world so I left the old lady hanging in the air. I’ve continued working on my field paper and after 1 hour of roaming around my neighborhood I came home to rest and finish my field paper on the next days.

Its was a fun experience. 10/11 would repeat again.

Based on what I experience in mapping my neighborhood is that I saw a few shops like sari sari store, bakery shops and laundry shops, and what I discovered in my place is most of the buildings or house are very close to each other and this is the reason why its very hard for me to identify which houses are apart from each other because once you look at it you will notice that they are like sharing same walls but the truth is they are not. What i think is that I would able to map my place if I manually check the house personally.

As a mapper who travels everyday and brings a field paper with them, I’ve seen many points and roads that I often go at. One of the familiar areas that I have been through was my community, our baranggay.

As I grew up here, many buildings have started to develop and add in our baranggay. Before, we didn’t have a water pumping station, but now it is one of the projects that we are all proud of for its benefits and uses for the people. Now, we have a covered court that was established for 5 years and it really seem so good. It’s fun to see different people gathering for a game. Back to the days, we only have a few stores around our baranggay. Our baranggay is very small. You can even go around for a few minutes just to see all of it.

But now, we almost have 15 “sari-sari” stores all over our baranggay, and I’m proud of that. You can see that people can access anything they need, just going in any stores in our baranggay. This can be seem too many because our baranggay is smaller than any other baranggay in San Juan City.

We have a few services around our place and they are very convenient for us. You can enjoy and explore the small community we have who got all of your needs. We also got optical clinics, dental clinics and salons, but out of those, we got 15 “sari-sari” stores you can more lean on. :-)

We have this place in my neighborhood, and its name was Capitolyo. Capitolyo is a place where there were a lot of restaurants and bars in it, it also has supermarket which I can buy goods and other things. I chose this because I tend to go there every time when I get stressed out because of school works. In other words, it is my stress reliever place. I am looking forward in my neighborhood to have more places like this.

I want to share my experience in doing fieldpaper of my neighbourhood. But before that, I want to explain that what I am mapping is the other block because it is hard to map my neighbourhood. There are lots of houses, houses are too close very close to each other, there are lots of alleys and the aerial view in openstreetmap is not clear and that’s why it is hard to map it in openstreetmap. And that is also the reason why I decided to map the other block. The other block is not far away from our house so I still consider it as my neighbor. Doing fieldpaper is tiring because you need to walk until you finish mapping. But for me it was really fun. I’ve exercised my feet, I’ve honed my spatial-visual skill and I’ve contributed to my neighbourhood. Looking for house number or building’s name isn’t easy especially the area is large. But I made it because of my desire to finish the task. What I’ve discovered while doing the mapping is some buildings are not properly mapped in openstreetmap. There are also businesses that are not existing anymore but still on the openstreetmap. And I’ve also discovered new businesses that I didn’t noticed when I’m passing by the area. With the things that I’ve discovered, I can now fix some errors of our neighbourhood and add new features to the unlabeled buildings in openstreetmap. And the things that I’ve learned, I will keep it in my mind.

Exploring and mapping my very wide and busy neighborhood for me is really fun because I can know places and buildings and at the same time I am exercising my body by walking. It may be tiring as it looks but I got the hang of it since I was also distracted by my interest of seeing and discovering places. I have discovered a lot of new interesting places and one good example is an eatery called Chef Von. I saw the place before but I never really tried to eat there but because my hunger as well as my curiosity strikes me, I decided that I will give it a try. I tried to eat there for lunch and the food was really great and has somehow affordable prices too. I am also a fan of computer games and I discovered a lot of computer shops in my vicinity that sparked my interests and might give it a try some time. I learned that your feet can really take you to places you have never seen before and you never know, you might discover something very interesting that can linger your curiosities, wants and needs.

Hi.. I want to share with you what I had experienced in doing fieldpaper. When I mapped my neighborhood or when I look around to my neighborhood, there is something new in our place or area that caught my attention, there is a building there that they construct, and that is apartment building.So, I include that building to fieldpaper and tag that name THE HILL, because that is the name of that apartment. And then, in some houses in my neighborhood ,I put there number address there in fieldpaper so that when I upload my fieldpapers it will contribute to the open street map(osm).And also, I put to my fieldpapers some convenience store name, so that when they look in there map, they will see what’s that name of store. All new that I discover is I put there in my fieldpapers or I box them just to recognize that is a building and also what kind of building and their names.That is my experienced in fieldpapers in PUPSJCWTS++.

One year ago, the memorable experience of my first State of the Map conference in beautiful Japan ended with me being up on stage and announcing that the next edition of SotM would have been in Milan, hosted and co-organized by my university, Politecnico di Milano!

Coming to State of the Map 2018 in Milan has been a long and thrilling journey. First, I’m proud to say that I kept all the promises made one year ago: to become an even more active OSM contributor, to become a member of the OSM Foundation, and to contribute to SotM 2018 organization! I had the unique pleasure to work behind the scenes with the magic people making each SotM so successful: Rob, Gregory, Christine, Michael, Benoit and Mikel, with the local support of two special people: Alessandro and Francesco. This post has the goal of sharing my experiences and perceptions about the State of the Map 2018, that was hosted in Milan, Italy, in September 2018, as also some keynotes about my brief talk (Lightning talk – just 5 minutes) that I had the opportunity to give there.

This was my first SotM, not the first Global one, the first SotM event that I had the opportunity to participate! It was incredible to be able to debut in this kind of meeting, participate in one of this scale. The opportunity to do it arrived with a scholarship that I received from OpenStreetMap Foundation, that allowed me to travel from Colombia to Italy and stay in Milan during the days of the event. When I arrived at the SotM, I started to meet other scholars, and, taking advantage of the inspiring Arnalie’s post about inclusivity. I found excellent the effort they made to bring people from different countries and continents, and also from different backgrounds, to the event. It is normal that in an event there is more representation of people from neighboring countries, but regarding the scholars, we had a grand representation of different (and also distant) countries.

Recently, I saw a diary post about Microsoft releasing US building footprints, and I wondered how they could be used to add buildings to OSM in my favorite editor. I quickly found out that large files won’t load in iD. I searched for a tool that could make the files smaller and usable and found one called geojsplit.

I took it upon myself to examine the code of that project, to learn a bit of JavaScript, and to form it into a tool more suited to my needs. Large database files won’t load in iD, but they can be made smaller in size by omitting features outside the viewing window of the editor. As a result, I can now see the building traces in my favorite editor. :)

I posted this changeset to correct problems with polygons arising out of new OSM rendering procedures - the most significant edit being to split a large polygon into two or more smaller polygons. I have created a new polygon, which JOSM tells me has no errors, although errors still exist in the remaining old plygon which still need to be corrected.

As this changeset hasn’t been posted yet, I can’t proceed with further edits required as a result of changes in OSM procedure.

A few months ago I switched to the contact: tagging scheme for contact data. In this tagging scheme “contact:” is attached to the beginning of the tag. It is the newer version of the “normal” tagging. osm.wiki/Key:contact

In my opinion this is much more accurate and clear. On the one hand it is clear that this is contact data, on the other hand a much more precise specification is possible.

For example, many POIs have social-media pages that can not be meaningfully entered without this tagging scheme. Without this scheme, a new tag has to be created for every new social network, which could be shown by many clients only years later, if at all. With this scheme you can add any network or similar and every client knows immediately what it is.

This scheme is currently used at about 10%, but is not yet set by any editor as a standard (as far as I know).

In my opinion, it is time to switch to this tagging scheme. What do you think and did you knew this tagging before?

This entry is a copy of my comment in a discussion on some of the OSM Carto rendering ideas. It’s so general, that I think it makes sense to show it for more people. I have some more thoughts on this subject and I hope I will write them down too.

I believe the main obstacle for better coexistence of big cities and outdoor rendering is #1957 “equalizing” ticket being unresolved.

I think about “WMAs” (well-mapped areas), which are located in the big cities where mappers were active, that they make the biggest difference. They start to be very rich, because this is the reality, which was not well covered by mappers just a few years ago. We could rely on this incompleteness up to some point and render whatever was available without critically rethinking the whole system for years. But this is no longer true and the WMAs begin to be drastically more dense than outdoor areas. This is nobody’s fault, it’s just the unexpected consequence of the success of OSM in gathering all kind of data. Of course, we might stay with what we were showing before, but it’s just closing eyes to avoid noticing the constant change of OSM data. Something like taking the snapshot of some past moment and refusing to take more current ones, just because it’s more familiar for cartographers than trying to face these new challenges.

I like the outdoor rendering and when it doesn’t hurt, I’m happy to make it also rich. There are places where we outperform typical (if not all) outdoor maps with details, like for example here:
