Beach Street, Daytona Beach, FL, USA, is one of the prime commercial areas in Daytona Beach. Currently the city government is making extensive modifications to the street itself, moving it from two lanes each direction to one lane. It’s also adding parking and trying to convert the street from a through road to a destination.

And so it was disconcerting to notice that one entire block of Beach Street – from International Speedway Boulevard to Magnolia Avenue, had only one business listed, Net Works, Inc. It’s understandable why a computer company would be on OSM. After all, we’re all geeks, right.

But there were a lot of stores, etc., that were ignored on that block. Additionally, all the different storefronts and alleys were all combined into a single “building”. So I walked down the street this morning, adding in every open business between those two streets. I also separated out the buildings and left open the alley. It’s difficult to talk about attracting business if the map doesn’t show any place for the people to go.

Of course, now I have to deal with the delay time as the changes work their way slowly through the different OSM zoom levels. Right now (six hours later) the changes haven’t propagated through any zoom levels, although they do appear on the Edit screen if you feel the urge to see the changes. Oh well, we’ll see what it looks like in a few days.

I’m not 100% accurate on where the specific businesses are. However, the order is correct, and the difference should be minor.

This morning I also added a couple more businesses from my daily commute to work.

I’m in Iowa on a political campaign, but took last Sunday off to tour the six surviving covered bridges of Madison County. If you are interested in a virtual tour, check out the images I uploaded to Mapillary. I used a GoPro Hero 7 Black, newly acquired after the GPS function of the GoPro Hero 5 Black refused to work.

We assessed where we are and got a lot of good work OSMF Board Screen to Screen a couple weeks ago. One place where we have not moved as much as hoped is with diversity and inclusion. Diversity and inclusion was a big topic at the start of this year’s Board, we adopted a diversity statement and started a diversity and inclusion special committee (DISC) which had a couple good meetings. Then nothing. Why and what can be done to revitalize?

I take personal responsibility. I organized the first two meetings, but was hoping to see someone else step up to take charge on the effort. My background – white male techie from US/Western Europe – is very well represented in the OSMF, and I didn’t think it was best for the DISC to have me as the chair. On reflection, that was wrong, and I should take up the effort to bring dedicated people together and make sure they have what they need to channel limited time and energy effectively.

So I want to do three things.

First, I want to have calls with people from underrepresented groups and geographies in OSMF, hear about your involvement in OSM, what you’d like to do in OSM and OSMF (and certainly not only on diversity directly), and offer my guidance and help to find good places to contribute. OSM is hard to navigate, and I want to make direct personal effort. Many of you I have the privilege to know, many not yet. Please get in touch with me, or share my contacts with folks others.

Second, I want to revitalize DISC and simply chair it. To make it vital is again going to take personal outreach to people who have been involved, or could be involved, and find the best places again to focus. One area I think we should take up is trust and safety in our online communication spaces.

I added a few miscellaneous items yesterday.

First, yesterday morning I added my gas station in DeLand. So now my RaceTrak is on the map.

Then, while I work I added one of our community centers to the map. I also added (separately) the tennis courts and the swimming pool. Since this was a work facility, there’s no guilt about doing that during the day.

I also made changes to the big hospital in Daytona Beach. The way it was mapped originally, a lot of the land on the other side of the street from the hospital was listed as hospital grounds. There’s an apartment building just constructed on that land, so I know it’s no longer hospital grounds. So I deleted that marker, but I added the Florida Health Care building which, while not associated with the hospital, is right across the street.

Finally, yesterday evening’s walk brought me by two Stetson dorms that weren’t tagged on the map. So I changed them from building to dorm and added the name to them.

Finally, apparently my application to the OSM Foundation was rejected because I used the wrong user name. Duh. So I resubmitted my membership application.

I must confess that in years of collaborating with more or less large projects, the worst community I have participated in is OpenStreetMap. There is no collaboration, the concept exists: this area is MY area so either you map as I say or rather you don’t map at all. So there are heterogeneous areas, some places with toponymy in dialectal form, others in Italian (I’m talking about Italy). For a moment I wanted to change all the toponymy of My 😅 area in dialect. But what’s the use? So I just make some changesets that I assume correct, if some other cartographer with a lot of degree tells me I was wrong, I revert. Simple, isn’t it? I only wish that if one criticizes me (even with rudeness) at least he would come down from the pedestal and tell me: you are wrong, these are the solutions. Instead it is not so. If I’m wrong tell me how to correct, saying it’s wrong is a non-constructive criticism. 🤔

I would like to share my experiences as a new mapper to OSM. I started mapping in August this year. I found the idea of providing open data to the community appealing. I would like to talk about my initial 2-3 months of mapping.

I have focussed on mapping the village near me called Ravenshead. A comparison image shows what it looked like from 2012. Between then and August 2020 very little changed. On the right shows the recent appearance, complete with addresses on houses. Overall I found the process to be slow but relaxing and satisfying. I would eventually like to speed up the process by looking at training a machine learning model to estimate roof locations, similar to Facebook, as a JOSM plugin, but trained on UK-style houses.

Well, that was an experience.

Yesterday I “ran” a 24K trail race. While I ended up walking a bunch of it, it did “finish” the race.

I came in last. (Correction: There was someone about an hour or so behind me. I didn’t know he was back there until I got home and looked at the results. However, I did make a few changes to the map based upon my run. Not a lot, but there were parts of the beginning of the run which were also visible on the photography that I marked. I also made a few other changes based on the run, so the map was updated.

A lot of the run was on unmapped mountain bicycle trails. They weren’t visible on the photograph, so I wasn’t comfortable putting them on the map. However, I did add the GPS trace to the database so if someone gets gung ho they can see what they can add. Enjoy.

My watch says I can’t run until Thursday morning, so I’m taking a bit of me time.

As written on the OSMF-Talk mailing list, I am proposing a resolution for the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the OSM Foundation on 12 December 2020. In order to get the proposal up for voting, I need support by at least 5 % of all members, i.e. about 80 members.

This is a fright that turned to fun.

In my morning walk today I travelled along Shanowen Grove, and I took StreetComplete with me, adding building levels, addresses, building types and so on. On the last section of road I discovered one of the buildings to appear on StreetComplete as a tower.

Posting in the #osmIRL Telegram group I shared the screenshot. Dónal came to my rescue It turns out the building was specified to have 21 levels. Looking at the object history on JOSM later it turns out the levels were set by Tshedy see here. However, knowing Tshedy’s level of accuracy and the likelihood that “21” is a typo that was intended to be a “2”. This is very much in keeping with a similar “small”(but big) error in Melbourne.

StreetComplete is a great tool, especially where the basic building objects have been mapped, in a slow stroll along a street one can add serious detail, and the better the initial mapping the easier it is to see which objects require further details.

Last year I pushed a resolution to change the membership fees of OSM UK at very short notice. The OSM UK members rightly (albeit much to my frustration at the time) rejected this resolution at the OSM UK general meeting. The following year, we started discussing fees much earlier and the members subsequently accepted a resolution this time around.

This week, posts to osmf-talk indicate that the OSMF board is considering a number of resolutions for their general meeting. These resolutions are much more complicated than a simple change in membership fee as they relate to changes to the Articles of Association to help prevent “evil takeover”. You would therefore expect significantly more upfront discussion. Changes to the Articles of Association shouldn’t be taken lightly as they can have weird, unforeseen consequences so you would also expect legal advise to be sought well in advance and some sort of summary of this to be presented to the members. This should occur in advance of a final decision as to what should go onto into the general meeting notice for voting.

Now I fully support provisions that help protect the OSMF; in fact I have been proposing options to the OSMF for at least 2 years. However I doubt many of us our experts in the field (our intelligence lies mainly in other domains). Are we even sure that an AoA change is the right option? You may get much more protection from other changes such as changing the companies status from the current “Ltd” organisation to something more suited to a non-profit organisation.

A while ago they put in a WaWa near Daytona Beach City Hall. I just added it. I also moved the Daytona Beach Greyhound Station marker so that it’s obvious that it’s behind the building.

Today I had to get new glasses at the local mall. I quickly noticed one or two items that I could fix immediately, but there have been changes to the stores. So I’m going to come back next rainy day and do a better job of updating the information here.

Well, that was fun. Beach Street in Daytona Beach, FL, USA, between Orange Avenue and Magnolia Avenue was fully laid out in the map. Lot’s of stores, etc. Unfortunately, as with many very busy commercial areas, there’s a high turnover in the stores in a given area.

Just in this one block area, I ended up deleting about half of the existing businesses and adding even more. Well, at least it’s up to date. For the time being.

Today I got lazy. I’ve got a city commission meeting on Wednesday and my hair is getting a bit long, so I thought I’d spend my lunch getting a hair cut. The bad news is that they were backed up, so I made an appointment for tomorrow. The good news is that they weren’t on the map, so I added them.

It was raining, and I was lazy, so I didn’t do my normal two mile walk finding new stuff to add to the map. But I did get something for the day, so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.

The Local Chapters and Communities Working Group (LCCWG) is the OpenStreetMap Foundation’s newest working group and it was established in September 2019 following the annual Local Chapters Congress at State of the Map 2019. Since its establishment, the working group has now grown to 10 members spread over 4 continents as can be seen on the map below.

I thought I’d take a look this morning at my normal morning walk. (I walk to the local 7-Eleven to buy a V-8. That way I’m getting some vegetables in my diet. It’s probably not enough, but it’s better than nothing.) I discovered that there were several commercial establishments that just weren’t on the map.

So I added them.
