Strontian gave its name to the element strontium (Sr) and the mineral strontianite from which it was separated. The mineral was discovered here in the 1790s by Crawford & Cruickshank.

Iron Age fort on the summit of Mither Tap. Bennachie may also be the site of the Roman battle, Mons Graupius, in AD 83.

The Battle of Corrichy took place in 1562 near Meikle Tap and involved several Scottish clans.

Portsoy is renowned for Portsoy marble (calcite) which is carved into various items. The rock is not marble but serpentine (altered olivine) and it occurs along the rocky coastline.

Cullen is the home of Cullen skink a chowder/soup made from local ingredients smoked haddock, potatoes, onions, butter & milk. A local delicacy.
