"Гонио-Апсаросская крепость – бывший древнеримский форпост в Аджарии, расположенный на побережье Черного моря, в 15 км к югу от Батуми. Первое упоминание о крепости оставил древнеримский писатель и политический деятель Плиний Младший, живший в I веке нашей эры. Крепость Гонио является самой старой в Грузии.

Раскопки, которые проводят археологи на ее территории, позволяют предположить, что археологические пласты относятся к XV – XVII векам до нашей эры. За прошедшие столетия планировка крепости практически не изменилась. Здесь все осталось таким же, как и тысячи лет назад, при римлянах. По периметру были установлены башни, 18 из которых сохранились до наших дней. На территории крепости Гонио, объявленной музеем-заповедником, предположительно может находиться захоронение одного из апостолов – Матфея."
