Ich bin ziemlich viel von diesem Routennetzwerk mit dem Fahrrad abgefahren. Es stellen sich dabei einige Probleme. Ausgangspunkt war, dass ein User einen Teil dieses Routennetzwerk von der Regionalparkzeit zusammengeklickt hat und mit schon bestehenden Daten vermischt hat. Das Netzwerk bekam in der Datenbank den Namen “Regionalpark Routennetz südlich des Mains”. Aber die eingetragenen Wege stimmten nicht mit den Angaben von https://www.regionalpark-rheinmain.de/ überein. Es war wesentlich mehr in OSM erfasst. Also habe ich mir OTG angeschaut, ob ich die Struktur, die der Regionalparkseite beschreibt, entdecke. Das ist nicht möglich.

Es gibt zwei Beschilderungen. Eine Beschilderung, die der FGSV-Beschilderung für Fahrräder angelehnt ist und eine eigene Regionalparkbeschilderung. Hie und da stehen diese Beschilderungen nebeneinander und widersprechen sich.

Weiter gibt es Routen, die im Landesfahrradroutenplaner stehen, aber nicht ausgeschildert sind. In Realität gibt es auch Routen, die ausgeschildert sind, aber nicht im Landesfahrradroutenplaner stehen.

Auf der Seite https://www.regionalpark-rheinmain.de/ wird zwar das Regionalparkprojekt dargestellt. Aber das lässt sich, wie schon geschrieben, schwer in der Beschilderung wiederfinden. Beispiel Regionalpark-Rundroute. Man findet sie problemlos, aber es wird nie klar, ist sie jetzt ein hervorgehobener Teil des Routennetzwerkes oder ist sie ein Teil, der nicht zum Routennetzwerk gehört? Ähnlich die Klimaroute.

Deswegen habe ich das Routennetzwerk wieder zurück umbenannt und fast alles abgefahren, was in der Datenbank war. Dann bin ich auch noch die Wege abgefahren, die im Landesroutenplaner stehen. Falls ausgeschildert, habe ich sie eingetragen.

Dabei musste ich aber feststellen, es gibt einige Abzweige, die weder in OSM, noch im Landesfahrradroutenplaner eingetragen sind. Ich hoffe, dass diese fehlenden Stücke durch andere ihren Weg in die Datenbank finden.

I got kind of sidetracked the past couple of days on two separate updates, one of which is in-progress (albeit a low priority for me), and the other I haven’t even started to unravel.

1. I studied the wiki to find the proper tagging method to indicate that the lower portion of Forest Avenue (btwn Brighton and Western, underneath PA-65) is off-limits to large trucks. While out walking around, I noticed a very new, very visible sign that forbids semis, so it’s quite possible that they’ve recently had issues with large trucks exiting PA-65 to attempt deliveries at the industrial area near the Emsworth Locks and Dam, or re-entering 65 farther down the road. While it seems that several other roads in Ben Avon are clearly marked as “no trucks, local deliveries only” (and I have tagged those roads as best as I could for now), this particular tunnel seems to be particularly off-limits. I plan to survey some other entry points into Ben Avon to verify signage and weight limits, and will update as I get better on-the-ground information.

2. I’ve noticed a whole tangled web of issues in the area of Spruce Run near the old Building Mill. Hiking trails cross streams, streams cross roads, streams cross buildings… it is difficult to make complete sense of things. For now I haven’t attempted any clean up in this area, but will do so after I survey the area in person. I am hoping to complete this without too much trespassing, and before the leaves obstruct line-of-sight from publicly-accessible vantage points.

Additionally, until now I have concerned myself with issues that arise from my own edits, but moving forward I will attempt to resolve other lingering issues that appear on the map in the Ben Avon vicinity while I am out-and-about.

One of my resolutions this year was to get my OSM tasks in order. In the few moments of free time I made a list of all (well, not all, just the most realistic) ideas for projects in various stages of design and implementation. I will update the progress on a regular basis.

Today, I got an email from my local conservation officer at the county council (whom I had briefly worked for in 2022, so he knows about my OSM activity) asking me whether there were any lime kilns mapped in County Kilkenny, because the government database didn’t have much to offer. And of course, there are some mapped; I made a video about it in 2021. So I sent him the overpass-turbo query.

I checked the government database which showed 4 lime kilns for that area; OSM had 20 (but I actually added another one that I had previously forgotten about).

When I was home and had access to a proper PC, I also built him a search for field names referring to lime kilns which can be “Kill Field” and “Kiln Field”, because that might hint at some more lime kilns.

Nice to know that all the effort of the last couple of years are paying off (if only metaphorically).

Due to editors that have recently reverted accurate changes and worked against these accurate changes, I will be leaving OSM in search of a better, more friendly mapping service.

A major version of uMap has been released last week.

This release is inauguring a new era in versioning uMap: in the future, we’ll take care of better documenting breaking changes, so expect more major releases from now on. More details on how we version.

A comprehensive changelog for that version is available in our technical documentation. Most of the changes for a major version are indeed technical, we are taking care of people deploying and maintaining instances with that approach. User-facing features are deployed continuously with our minor versions. We think that scheme is more valuable for the community.

It doesn’t mean you will not see improvements with that release though. Most notably, you’ll face:

A revamped dashboard with multiple options for your maps (including a bulk download / backup)

A hard work by @davidbgk and @Aurelie-Jallut!

I have completed adding a large portion of sidewalks and pedestrian crossings in Ben Avon. I still have the eastern portion to complete, as well as a few loose ends, especially where they integrate with others’ edits and special cases. I need to also do some specific surveying to compare to street-level photos and aerial imagery for some of these loose ends.

I have also added fire hydrants and mailboxes as I saw them on street-level imagery and walkabout surveying, but not quite in a comprehensive way.

I have had to move and tweak some building shapes during this process, and it makes me want to tackle that in a more systematic way… but there are likely other more pressing needs.

I think after I have finished adding sidwalks, I may go back and start adding driveways and walkways to help door-to-door routing.

Flashback

Two years ago, I visited Timor-Leste with the support of the Open Mapping Hub Asia Pacific to introduce OSM and Open Mapping Tools to communities and humanitarian organizations in Timor-Leste. One of the outcomes of this activity was the formation of the OSM TL community, which continues to grow to this day.

Nowadays

Through the support of the Open Mapping Guru program initiated by OMH Asia Pacific, G-SIG, in collaboration with OSM TL and World Vision Timor-Leste, has conducted a capacity-building activity related to the use of Ushahidi. I am very pleased to have been deployed as a Guru to facilitate this training, marking my first in-person training as one of the OM Gurus.

V Českém Krumlově se pořád něco děje. Ať už to jsou věci zajímavé, tak i věci které bychom neradi viděli. Na různé nešvary tu máme bedlivé oči mnoha místních občanů, kteří si hned všimnou a rychle o tom referují ostatním ve skupině na sociání síti. Jednou je to rozbitá lavička, nebo jindy odpadky kolem kontejneru. Pořád něco!

Zjevení Krumlovského Démona

A já se přiznám, že jsem jedním z nich. Protože tu také bydlím a také pozoruji co se ve městě děje. U některých bolístek ve veřejném prostoru je hned jasné, kdo je zapříčinil a kdo by je měl napravit. Některé jsou však záhadné a objevují se zcela náhodně na různých místech města. Nikdo z nás by přeci nic takového neudělal!

Když jsem několik takových zločinů objevil, usoudil jsem, že je nám všem natruc spáchal nějaký skřítek škudibík. Pojmenoval jsem ho Krumlovský Démon.

De repente, te encuentras en pleno corazón de Segovia, pero no reconoces las calles ni los lugares que te rodean, ¡has aparecido en la Segovia de 1520! ¿O tal vez 1832? Te sientes como un náufrago en un océano de historia, perdido en el tiempo y en el espacio. Tratas de ubicarte preguntando a los majos locales pero sus indicaciones te son del todo incomprensibles. ¿Qué hacer en esta situación tan desconcertante?

Pero espera un momento, ¡aquí es donde entra en acción OpenStreetMap (OSM)! Gracias a las valiosas contribuciones de la comunidad, incluyendo las de quien escribe estas líneas, ahora disponemos de un mapa detallado de Segovia que no solo muestra los nombres actuales de las calles y lugares, sino también los nombres antiguos de una Segovia trimilenaria y alternativos surgidos en distintas generaciones que han sido cuidadosamente añadidos. Contamos ahora con muchos “loc_name” para denominaciones locales, “alt_name” para nombres alternativos y “old_name” para títulos antiguos.

Se han añadido una gran cantidad de nombres antiguos y alternativos a OpenStreetMap, permitiendo a los viajeros en el tiempo explorar la rica historia de Segovia. Por ejemplo, la Calle de San Gabriel, conocida como “La Cueva de la Zorra”, y la Plaza de los Huertos, también conocida como Plaza de Doctor Laguna, ahora están claramente identificadas en el mapa. Además, la emblemática Calle Real, compuesta por Cervantes, Juan Bravo e Isabel La Católica, muestra cómo OpenStreetMap refleja la diversidad y la complejidad del “callejero de la gente” de Segovia.

On the highway=steps wiki page, there is a section on Possible tagging mistakes. It calls out the incorrect use of steps=*. steps is an alternative tag for step_count. It is not meant to be used with yes/no. So I have been using this overpass turbo query to identify all nodes with incorrect steps usage.

This is a pretty easy task for me to get back into OSM mapping. It also helps me keep up my status with OsmAnd’s Free map updates for mappers

Uživatelé map používají mapy nejčastěji v mobilech a také pro navigace v autě. Uživatele dělíme na oblibovače Google, Waze, Mapy.cz, Garmin a na ty ostatní, kteří vůbec neví, jaký typ navigátoru používají a z jakého důvodu zabloudili.

Je poměrně nemožné vysvětlit uživateli jeho oblíbeného navigátoru, v čem má jeho navigace nedostatky. Ty totiž na mapě NEJSOU. Přednosti navigace umí objevit kdekdo, ale pak se dostane do situace, kdy tyto přednosti jaksi nejsou patrné. Například při návštěvě Českého Krumlova.

Autem sice nejezdím, ale právě těchto nedostatků jsem si byl vědom pokaždé, když jsem musel někomu vysvětlovat, že ne… tudy cesta pro vaše auto opravdu nevede a váš cíl je jinde, než vám ukazuje váš mobilní navigátor.

Fun fact totiž je, že většina navigátorů (zejména těch zabudovaných v autech) naviguje pouze automobily, tedy se řídí dopravními omezeními pro auta. Nedokáží se přepnout do situace, že lze hledat optimální cestu i pro chodce, cyklistu, turistu, nebo třeba … trailového bikera.

Proto, abych to pořád dokola nemusel vysvětlovat že v ruce držíte špatný navigátor, tak jsem si řekl, že to “vylepším” … tedy na tyto případy tu v místě zlepším uživatelskou přívětivost map. O, jak pošetilý to plán!

Nejdřím jsem začal domapováním Českého Krumlova na OSM. To se po několika letech znatelně zlepšilo a teď už jen průběžně kontroluji novinky a detaily. Každopádně všechny ulice a cesty by měly být v navigaci použity správně, tedy jednosměrky jen jedním směrem a podobně.

Další krok bylo zkoumání, jak se chovají různé mapové aplikace. Tady jsou postřehy u některých z nich.

Když jsem před lety používal blogovací platformu Bloguje.cz mohl jsem na nějaké pokročilé používání šablony rovnou zapomenout. Bloguje bylo opravdu jen pro nenáročné psaní deníčků. I tak se mi tam povedlo vyrobit vlastní nové šablony, které svou specifickou funkčností neměly v rámci Bloguje srovnání.

Připravil jsem šablonu na klasický blog s kategoriemi, dynamickým designem a vyhledáváním, šablonu s vlastními rámci a podstránkami (s nástroji, které vůbec rámce neměly v plánu podporovat) šablonu na mikroblogování a šablonu na videoportál ještě dříve, než existovalo YouTube.

To vše jde dodnes vidět na internetovém archivu Wayback Machine, respektive ve statických kopiích mých blogů na mém archivu.

Blogy jsem používal a rozvíjel několik let v období 2005 - 2017, než byla celá platforma Bloguje ukončena a uživatelé i s blogy přemigrovali převážně na WordPress, Blogger, nebo na nejhorší variantu - iDnes.

Vždy mi ale přišlo, že použití map je ve všech blogovacích portálech zanedbané, nebo umožněné velmi primitivním způsobem. Nanejvýš ve formě srovnatelné s vložením hypertextového odkazu, obrázku nebo iframe.

Později jsem se rozhodl obnovit moje blogy k novým účelům, volba byla jednoznačně WordPress na vlastním hostingu. Hledal jsem pěknou šablonu pro mapy - ale to byl problém - nic takového v dostupné formě není, nikdo se tím řádně nezabývá.

Respektive objevil jsem jednu neudržovanou šablonu s názvem Jeo. Na této straně jsem se také seznámil s pojmem Geojournalism. Dříve, než podobnou činnost v Čechách zpopularizovala datová žurnalistika.

Na základě šablony Jeo jsem viděl v zahraničí opravdu zajímavé mapové weby, které používaly vlastní mapové vizualizace s interaktivními prvky. Paráda!

Nakonec jsem Jeo šablonu zprovoznil a vložil do ní OSM mapový podklad a začal přidávat příspěvky, které měly přímý odkaz na mapě. Blog najdete pod názvem mapa spotter

Jedno z prvních setkání s něčím, co se později změnilo na přispívání do otevřených projektů, byl blog Kliktivisti. Věnoval se internetovým tématům, které by mohly být zajímavé pro lidi intenzívně se pohybující na internetu. Kliktivista bylo označení člověka, který na internetu vyvíjel aktivismus jen tím, že klikal, nebo komentoval nějaké cizí události. Tedy nepříliš lichotivé označení. Tento blog to chtěl ale ukázat v jiném světle, že aktivita na internetu může mít i skutečně pozitivní přínos. Jde jen o to zvolit to užitečné a nedělat to neužitečné. Jedním z dobrých kliktivistů byl i Jan Böhm. To bylo někdy v roce 2014 nebo 2015.

Něco se mi na tom blogu zalíbilo a zároveň se mi zalíbil termín “virtuální dobrovolník” který jsem asi viděl jinde. Přišlo mi, že to přesně pasuje do mých možností jak se dobrovolnou činností u počítače podílet na něčem užitečném.

Zanedlouho se Jan Böhm začal více věnovat nově vznikajícímu projektu Missing Maps v ČR a společně s malým týmem MSF začal pořádat v Praze Mapathony. Tam jsem ho potom potkal i naživo.

Nějakou chvilku mi trvalo, než jsem se odhodlal na mapathon přijít. Platí zde opravdu to známé “nejtěžší je ten první krok” . Když jsem konečně dorazil na prvním mapathon, poznal jsem, že to je setkání plné zajímavých informací a hlavně skvělé atmosfery. Potom už bylo pro mne chození na další mapathony snadnější. Vlastně jsem se na ně těšil.

Na akcích jsme vždy na začátku dostali vysvětlení a návod jak mapovat pro nově zapojené, pak už jsme v rámci večera pracovali na doplňování aktuálních projektů.

účastnil jsem se několik desítek mapathonů zejména zpočátku a zažil neuvěřitelnou atmosferu nadšení a pocitu dobře vykonané práce.

‘Connecting with Community: Let’s Switch to Mapping’

YouthMappers at Eastern University recently organized a dynamic and engaging day-long session focused on the theme ‘Connecting with Community: Let’s Switch to Mapping.’ on 07 February 2024. It was an amazing Experience, where we learned The Butterfly Effect… Play and Learn-What an outstanding concept of teaching. In the context of community building, leaders play a pivotal role as catalysts for change and progress. Their actions, no matter how small, can set off a chain reaction of positive transformations within the community. For instance, a leader who takes the time to listen to the concerns of residents and actively involve them in decision-making processes can foster a sense of empowerment and unity among community members. This, in turn, may inspire individuals to become more engaged and invested in the betterment of their community.

Some of my goals for mapping Ben Avon

(Emsworth, Avalon, Kilbuck Twp, and surrounding areas as I progress):

1. Add sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and other footpaths where they exist.

2. Add as much rich data to these as possible to increase accessibility for all modes of travel.

3. How to add slope data efficiently?

4. How to add surface conditions, especially micro-scale (<1m) features such as broken concrete, uneven transitions between concrete slabs, debris, etc.?

5. Add driveways and footpaths between sidewalks and building entrances.

6. Refine building outlines, position, and tags.
